Garmin Connect is the control center for a compatible Garmin watch, cycling computer, or fitness device. Use the mobile app for pairing, routine Bluetooth syncing, quick reviews, device settings, workouts, courses, safety features, and Connect IQ content. Use Garmin Connect in a web browser for larger-screen analysis, detailed planning, course creation, and file imports. Garmin Express adds a computer-and-USB route for compatible devices.
Exact menus vary by device, app version, operating system, language, region, and account eligibility. The steps below follow Garmin’s current documented routes, but your model’s manual takes precedence when a label or button differs.

What you need before setting up Garmin Connect
- A compatible Garmin device
- A Garmin account
- The latest Garmin Connect app from the Apple App Store or Google Play
- A charged device and a phone with Bluetooth enabled
- Permissions for Bluetooth, notifications, location, and any features you choose to use
- Current device software and app updates
If you are replacing a phone or Garmin device, sign in to your existing account. Do not create a second account because you forgot the password: Garmin says separate accounts can split your history and cannot simply be merged. Use Garmin’s account-recovery guidance instead.
Garmin Connect, Garmin Express, and Connect IQ: what is the difference?
These names refer to related but distinct parts of Garmin’s ecosystem:

- Connect IQ Store: The separate store for compatible watch faces, apps, widgets or glances, data fields, and some music-related features. It is not the same as Garmin Connect.
- Garmin Explore: Garmin’s outdoor trip-planning platform for compatible outdoor devices, rather than the primary health, fitness, and training platform.
Garmin’s apps overview explains how these services fit together.
How to create or sign in to a Garmin account
In the mobile app
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Select Create Account, or sign in with your existing Garmin account.
- Review and acknowledge the EULA.
- Complete the requested profile information and age confirmation.
- Continue to device pairing.
On the web
- Open Garmin Connect in a browser.
- Select Create One beneath the sign-in control.
- Enter your birthdate and country or region.
- Complete the required account fields.
- Select the activities you plan to track so Garmin can tailor the dashboard.
Garmin may change onboarding labels or show different options by country, age, account, and device.
How to pair a Garmin device with your phone
- Install and open Garmin Connect, then sign in.
- Put the Garmin device into phone-pairing mode, usually from its setup or connectivity menu.
- In Garmin Connect, open the device section and choose Add Device.
- Select your device when it appears.
- Confirm the pairing code shown on the phone and device.
- Complete the profile, permissions, notification, and safety prompts.
- Let the first synchronization finish before recording an activity.
Pair from inside Garmin Connect rather than relying only on the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Garmin says one device can be paired with only one mobile device at a time, although the same Garmin account can be used on multiple phones or tablets. If the device was previously connected to another phone, remove that old connection when Garmin’s model-specific instructions require it.

The normal data path is:
Garmin device → Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or USB → Garmin Connect account → mobile app and web dashboard
Routine phone synchronization normally uses Bluetooth. Depending on the model, Wi-Fi can upload activities and download software or planned workouts. Garmin Express provides a USB route through a computer. Garmin describes Garmin Connect as a platform for synchronizing data from compatible devices; see its current support explanation.
A sync may include steps, heart rate, sleep, stress, Pulse Ox where supported and enabled, recorded running, cycling, swimming, or walking activities, and metrics such as VO2 max, Training Effect, or Training Status where your device supports them.
How to trigger a manual sync
Open Garmin Connect and keep the device close to the phone. Some recent Garmin devices provide a Sync command in the device controls menu, but this is not universal. Consult the model manual if you cannot find it.

Current-day information generally appears on Garmin Connect’s Home page. For older information, a general app route is More, followed by the relevant category:
Rank #2
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Activities for saved runs, rides, swims, walks, and other recordings
- Health Stats for wellness and daily measurements
- Performance Stats for supported training metrics
Depending on the activity and device, a recording may show duration, pace, heart rate, elevation, GPS track, power, cadence, laps, Training Effect, and other fields. No Garmin device records every metric.
Raw data, estimates, and device-specific metrics
- Raw or directly recorded measurements: Examples include heart rate, pace, elevation, steps, and sleep duration.
- Derived metrics: VO2 max, Training Effect, Training Status, and recovery-related scores are calculated from recorded data and supported profiles.
- Device-specific metrics: ECG, skin temperature, running dynamics, cycling power, dive information, golf data, and Body Battery-style measures require particular hardware, software, sensors, regions, or settings.
These metrics are estimates or training and wellness indicators, not automatically medical diagnoses. Do not use a Garmin score as a substitute for clinical advice.
Editing or deleting an activity
Open the activity in Garmin Connect to make available corrections such as changing its name or activity type, adding notes, assigning equipment, adjusting privacy, or deleting an accidental or duplicate recording. Not every field is editable. Sensor data, GPS tracks, and derived calculations may not be fully reconstructed after an edit.

How to create and send a custom workout
In the app
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Select More → Training & Planning → Workouts.
- Select Create a Workout, then choose the workout type.
- Add steps, durations, and optional intensity targets.
- Save the workout.
- Open it and select the Send to Device icon.
- Choose the compatible device and sync it.
On the web
- Sign in to Garmin Connect.
- Open Training & Planning → Workouts.
- Choose a workout type and select Create a Workout.
- Configure and save the workout.
- Select the Send to Device icon, choose the device, and select Send to Device.
- Sync the device. A web-created workout sent by USB may require Garmin Express.
Workouts are built from steps, durations, and optional intensity targets. Garmin notes that available workout options vary by device. Some compatible music-capable watches support audio notes in workout steps, limited by Garmin’s documentation to 15 seconds. Animations and individual step splits are not universally supported.
Find Garmin-prepared workouts
On the web, use Training & Planning → Workouts → Find a Workout, save the selection to My Workouts, send it to the compatible device, and sync. Custom workouts, Garmin-prepared workouts, Garmin Coach workouts, and device-native workouts are different categories; a workout visible in Connect is not necessarily supported by every watch or computer.
Use Garmin Coach and training plans
Garmin offers plans and structured training options for activities including running, cycling, triathlon, and strength, along with self-guided plans. A general web route is:
- Sign in to Garmin Connect.
- Select Training & Planning → Garmin Coach Plans.
- Select Find a Plan.
- Choose a plan or browse all plans.
- Enter the required goal, event, date, and preference information.
- Schedule the plan and sync a compatible device.
Eligible plans may adapt around an event, a milestone, improved fitness, or strength. Options depend on the device and plan.
Rank #3
- Easy-to-use running smartwatch with built-in GPS for pace/distance and wrist-based heart rate; brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls; lightweight design in 43 mm size
- Up to 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS mode
- Reach your goals with personalized daily suggested workouts that adapt based on performance and recovery; use Garmin Coach and race adaptive training plans to get workout suggestions for specific events
- 25+ built-in activity profiles include running, cycling, HIIT, strength and more
- As soon as you wake up, get your morning report with an overview of your sleep, recovery and training outlook alongside weather and HRV status (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
Self-guided plans may not appear as an active plan in the app; their workouts may instead be available through the calendar. Some cross-training or swim elements can appear as calendar notes rather than structured workouts on the device. Cycling plans may restrict changes to dates or long-workout days, and quitting a plan may be irreversible.
When moving to a replacement device, confirm compatibility and, where applicable, set it as the Primary Wearable Device if workouts do not transfer. An active plan does not guarantee that every scheduled item will appear identically on a different model.
Create, import, and send courses
Create a course
- Open Training & Planning → Courses on the web, or the equivalent course area in the app.
- Choose the activity type.
- Draw or select the route.
- Save and name the course.
- Send it to a compatible device.
- Sync before starting the activity.
Import a FIT, GPX, or TCX route
Garmin documents support for .fit, .gpx, and .tcx course files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrom a phone: Open the course file, choose Garmin Connect when prompted, select the course type, rename it if necessary, and save it.
From the web: Go to Training & Planning → Courses → Import. Drag in the file or browse for it, select Get Started, choose the course type, continue, rename and save the course, then send it to the device and sync.
Garmin warns that many devices read only the first 15 characters of a course name. This is device-dependent, but short, unique names prevent confusion when several routes are stored.
Connect Strava, Apple Health, and other services
Garmin Connect and Strava
- Open Strava.
- Select You → Settings → Connect an app or device.
- Select Garmin, then Connect Garmin.
- Agree to the terms.
Garmin says activities uploaded to Garmin Connect can automatically appear in Strava. The first connection may transfer the previous year’s Garmin Connect activities, depending on account state. Activities created in Strava do not sync back to Garmin Connect through this integration, so it is not fully bidirectional.

Garmin Connect and Apple Health
After a successful device sync, Garmin Connect can push selected information to Apple Health, subject to device and setting limitations. Garmin describes this as primarily a Garmin-to-Apple Health flow rather than a complete two-way synchronization. GPS tracks are not written to Apple Health through this integration. Review Apple Health permissions after connecting.
Rank #4
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

Automatic integrations versus manual transfers
Automatic integrations are convenient but can create duplicates when several services upload the same activity. Manual transfer uses FIT, GPX, or TCX files and gives you more control, but the destination may not accept every field or calculation. Review permissions and duplicate behavior for each third-party app.
Manually upload a missing activity
Manual upload is the recovery route when a saved activity remains on the device but automatic synchronization fails. Garmin’s documented limits include FIT files up to 50 MB, GPX or TCX files up to 25 MB, and fewer than 99,999 data points; limits can change.
- Connect the Garmin device to a Windows or Mac computer with its charging cable.
- Open the activity folder: on Windows, Garmin device → Garmin → Activity; on Mac, open the Garmin drive and then Garmin → Activity.
- Sign in to Garmin Connect Web.
- Select the cloud upload icon and choose Import Data.
- Browse to the activity file and select Import.
Some music-storage or MTP devices may not appear as a normal drive on Mac. Garmin notes that a Windows computer may be required in that situation. Keep the original device file until the web upload is confirmed.
Protect your privacy before sharing Garmin activities
GPS activities can expose your home, workplace, regular routes, and routines. Set privacy before sharing your first route, especially if activities start and finish at home.
Review profile visibility, activity visibility, course visibility, LiveTrack settings, location permissions, and connected-app permissions. On Garmin Connect Web, Garmin’s documented route for an individual activity is Activities → All Activities → select the activity → padlock → choose a privacy level. Check the equivalent control in the app, then review privacy again after connecting Strava or another service.
LiveTrack and other sharing features can be useful for safety, but share only with people you trust and understand what location information the selected setting exposes.
Install watch faces and apps with Connect IQ
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Select More → Connect IQ Store.
- Choose the device if multiple devices are paired.
- Search for a watch face, app, widget, or data field.
- Open the listing and check compatibility.
- Select install.
Connect IQ content is device-specific. A watch face or data field that appears in the store may not run on your Garmin model or may require capabilities your device does not have. The Connect IQ Store is the appropriate place to browse compatible content.
Garmin Connect troubleshooting by symptom
The device will not pair
- Turn on Bluetooth and keep the device close to the phone.
- Confirm it is not already paired to another phone.
- Restart both devices.
- Retry pairing from Garmin Connect, not only the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Remove an old Bluetooth pairing only when Garmin’s current instructions for your model call for it.
- Confirm you are signing in to the intended Garmin account.
The device pairs but will not sync
- Open Garmin Connect and bring the device near the phone.
- Trigger a manual sync on the device if available.
- Check the phone’s internet connection.
- Review Bluetooth, location, notification, and battery-restriction permissions.
- Restart Garmin Connect and the phone.
- Check whether the activity is still present on the Garmin device.
- Use Garmin Express or manual file upload if the activity is important.
An activity is missing
- Confirm that the activity was saved on the device.
- Check that Garmin Connect is using the correct account.
- Perform another sync.
- Inspect the device’s Garmin → Activity folder over USB.
- Manually upload the file if necessary.
- Do not delete the original until the upload is verified.
A workout or course does not appear
- Check compatibility with the exact device.
- Confirm it was sent to the correct device.
- Sync after sending it.
- Look in the device’s workouts or courses library.
- Use Garmin Express if the web workflow requires computer transfer.
- Check whether the item is a calendar note rather than a structured workout.
- For a replacement watch, check the Primary Wearable Device setting where applicable.
There are duplicate activities
Duplicates commonly occur when you manually import a file and the original later syncs, or when overlapping third-party integrations upload the same recording. Compare the GPS track and sensor data, then delete only the inferior duplicate.

Metrics look wrong
Check the user profile, heart-rate zones, sport settings, GPS conditions, optical-heart-rate fit, paired sensors, and device limitations. Firmware or app changes can also affect presentation. A metric that is estimated cannot necessarily be corrected after recording, and Garmin Connect cannot recreate missing sensor data.
App, web, or Garmin Express?
| Task | App | Web | Garmin Express |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pair a device | Yes | Limited | Yes, for computer setup |
| Review data | Yes | Yes | No |
| Create a custom workout | Yes | Yes | No |
| Send some web content by USB | No | Yes | Required |
| Import an activity file | Limited | Yes | No |
| Import a course | Yes | Yes | No |
| Install Connect IQ content | Via Connect IQ | Via Connect IQ website | Sometimes |
This is a general guide, not a universal compatibility matrix. For most owners, the app is the starting point; the web version is better for detailed planning and file management; Garmin Express is the fallback for USB-based updates, transfers, and recovery.
Do you need Garmin Connect+?
No—not for core Garmin Connect use. Garmin says existing Connect features and data remain free. Connect+ adds premium features such as AI-generated Active Intelligence insights, expanded LiveTrack, performance dashboards, selected training guidance, nutrition logging, live-activity features, and additional social tools. Availability depends on the device and market.
Recommended Free Tools
Garmin’s U.S. announcement dated March 27, 2025 listed a 30-day trial and prices of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. These are U.S. reference prices, not a guarantee of the current price elsewhere; check the signup screen. The documented signup routes are More → Settings → Garmin Connect+ in the app, or avatar → Account Settings → Garmin Connect+ on the web.
If you mainly need syncing, activity history, standard Garmin metrics, basic workouts, courses, and training plans, you should not need Connect+. Consider it only if its premium insights, expanded sharing, or additional guidance address a specific need.
What to connect or buy next
Garmin Connect itself is not usually the purchase decision. If you need more capability, choose hardware based on the exact activity profile, GPS and mapping needs, battery expectations, sensor compatibility, training metrics, music, payments, LTE, satellite features, and support for the specific workouts or courses you plan to use. Garmin’s official product directory is the safest source for current model compatibility.
Potential accessories include chest heart-rate straps, cycling speed and cadence sensors, power meters, foot pods, running-dynamics accessories, bike radar and lights, smart scales, and replacement charging cables. Check ANT+ or Bluetooth support and exact model compatibility first. The fact that Garmin Connect can display a field does not mean every device can record or interpret it.
