Open Garmin Connect, go to More → Garmin Devices → Add Device, put the watch into pairing mode, then confirm the matching six-digit code. The watch is properly set up when it appears under Garmin Devices in Garmin Connect and completes its first sync.
Before you start
- Install or update Garmin Connect.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Charge and power on the watch.
- Keep the phone and watch within a few feet during setup. Garmin manuals commonly use 10 m (33 ft) as a maximum troubleshooting distance, not an ideal pairing distance.
- Make sure the watch is not already connected to another phone or tablet.
- Disable watch modes that can turn off Bluetooth, such as Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode on supported models.
Garmin Connect’s current minimum requirements, checked August 18, 2026, are iOS 18.2 or later for iPhone/iPod touch and Android 9 or later for Android phones. Android must natively support Google Play; Android Go is not supported. Garmin says Huawei phones, the Lenovo Vibe X S960, Meizu MX4, and Samsung J3 model J320FN did not pass its internal testing and may experience Bluetooth problems. Check Garmin’s live compatibility requirements before troubleshooting an older or unusual phone.

Pair a Garmin watch with an Android phone
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Tap More in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Garmin Devices.
- Tap Add Device.
- Put the watch into pairing mode. Depending on the model, open its menu and choose Phone, Bluetooth, or Connectivity, followed by Pair Phone or Pair Mobile Device.
- When Garmin Connect finds the watch, select it. The button may say Connect It, Start, or Set Up.
- Compare the six-digit code on the watch with the code in Garmin Connect. Confirm only if they match.
- Finish the setup prompts and allow the permissions needed for syncing and notifications.
If the watch is not discovered, check Garmin Connect’s Android permission path: More → Settings → Phone Permissions → Manage Permissions → Permissions. Ensure Nearby devices is set to Allow. Android manufacturers can rename or relocate these controls, so the exact labels may differ.
Pair a Garmin watch with an iPhone
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Tap More → Garmin Devices → Add Device.
- If prompted, choose Find Nearby Accessories.
- Put the watch into pairing mode using its Phone, Bluetooth, or Connectivity menu.
- When the watch appears, tap Set Up.
- Verify that the six-digit code on the watch matches the code shown in Garmin Connect.
- Tap Done and complete the remaining setup prompts.
How to put a Garmin watch into pairing mode
Garmin watches do not all use the same menu structure. Common paths include:
#1 Best Overall
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Phone → Pair Phone
- Connectivity → Phone → Pair Phone
- Watch Settings → Connectivity → Phone → Pair Phone
- Settings → Phone Bluetooth → Pair Phone
If none of these appears, search the Garmin manuals for your exact model. Pairing mode may be hidden under a broader connectivity or phone menu.
Do not pair it from Bluetooth settings first
Do not begin by selecting the Garmin watch in the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Garmin recommends initiating the connection in Garmin Connect because direct Bluetooth-menu pairing can leave syncing, notifications, or setup incomplete.

If you already paired it directly, remove the entry from the phone’s Bluetooth list, remove the watch from Garmin Connect if it appears there, restart both devices, and repeat the app-first process.

- Confirm that the watch is actively showing its pairing screen.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Restart the watch.
- Restart the phone.
- Update Garmin Connect and, when possible, the watch software.
- Check the phone’s operating-system compatibility and Android Nearby devices permission.
- Ensure Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode is not disabling Bluetooth on the watch.
- Remove the watch from Garmin Connect.
- Forget or unpair the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Remove the watch from any other phone or tablet to which it remains connected.
- Enter pairing mode again and add it from Garmin Connect.
Seeing the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth list does not prove that Garmin Connect has completed setup. If it appears there but not in the app, forgetting the Bluetooth entry and starting again through Garmin Connect is usually the cleanest recovery path.
If the pairing code does not match
Cancel the attempt and retry. Do not accept a mismatched code. It can indicate that the phone is trying to use a stale Bluetooth record or connect to a different nearby device. Forget old Garmin entries, restart the phone and watch, and begin again in Garmin Connect.

Pairing after getting a new phone
- On the old phone, open Garmin Connect → More → Garmin Devices, select the watch, open the top-right menu, and choose Remove Device.
- Also remove the watch from the old phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Install Garmin Connect on the new phone and sign in to the same Garmin account.
- On the new phone, use More → Garmin Devices → Add Device.
- Put the watch in pairing mode and confirm the matching code.
Signing in to the same Garmin account does not automatically create the new phone’s Bluetooth connection. The watch still needs to be paired through Garmin Connect.
On iOS 18.2 or later with Garmin Connect 5.21 or later, Garmin says removing the watch through the app may also remove it from the iPhone’s Bluetooth menu. This behavior is version-dependent; check Bluetooth manually if the old entry remains.

Paired but not syncing or showing notifications?
That is a connection or permission problem rather than necessarily a failed initial pairing. Confirm that:
- Bluetooth is still enabled on the phone.
- Garmin Connect has the permissions required by your phone and the features you use.
- Garmin Connect and the watch software are updated.
- The watch is not in a Bluetooth-disabling mode.
- The watch is not connected to multiple phones or tablets.
- The phone and watch are close together, then restart both before removing and re-pairing them.
Garmin separates paired-but-disconnected, pairing-failed, device-not-found, and notification problems, so use the branch that matches what you see.
When to contact Garmin
Contact Garmin Support if the watch cannot enter pairing mode, remains absent from Garmin Connect after the clean reset sequence, repeatedly fails despite meeting the compatibility requirements, is locked to an inaccessible device, or will not restart normally. Avoid a factory reset unless Garmin’s model-specific instructions recommend it, since reset behavior and data consequences vary by watch.

Need a Garmin watch?
If you are replacing an incompatible or obsolete watch, compare Garmin’s current models only after checking your phone against the Garmin Connect requirements. Garmin Connect is presented by Garmin as a free, zero-subscription app, but hardware and optional services are separate considerations.
