Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA vintage watch is worth what one specific, correctly identified example sells for in a transparent transaction, and that depends on the exact reference, the originality of its parts, its documented service history, and the costs of the sale. Brand-level averages and generic online price ranges rarely settle the question. To value a watch before you buy or sell it, identify the reference and configuration, compare completed sales of that same reference in similar condition, check each component for originality, and then account for likely service costs and the fees of the channel you use.
Step 1: Identify the exact reference before pricing anything
Record the maker, the model and reference number, any visible serial numbers, the movement type, the case material, and the configuration, meaning the dial variant, bracelet or strap type, and any complications. Two watches from the same maker and the same year can differ substantially in value, so the reference and configuration carry more weight than the brand name.
Some identifying numbers sit inside the case. Patek Philippe’s official Watch Authenticity FAQ says the caseback should be removed only by an Authorized Retailer or an Authorized Service Center. If you need internal numbers on a Patek Philippe, ask the seller or a specialist to check them rather than opening the case yourself. The same caution applies to any vintage watch whose case you cannot open without risking water-resistance seals or damage.
Step 2: Build a comparison set from completed sales
The useful comparison is the price a watch of the same reference actually sold for, ideally in similar condition, with similar originality, accessories, and documentation, and in the same currency or market. Asking prices show what a seller hopes to get. Auction estimates are guides, not guarantees of the result. Treat both as context rather than as proof of value.

Even a careful comparison set is only a starting point. Two sold watches of the same reference can still differ because one has a refinished dial and the other has original parts, or because one has a documented service and the other does not. Use the sales to bracket a range, then adjust for the specific watch in front of you.
Step 3: Inspect originality and condition component by component
Originality is a separate value factor from condition. A watch can look clean and still be less desirable to collectors if its parts have been replaced or altered. Check each component against what is correct for that reference and period, and describe anything you cannot verify as uncertain rather than as original.

Dial
- Look for refinished dials, which often show printing that is too crisp, uneven lume color, or a dial that does not match the aging of the rest of the watch.
- A redial, meaning a dial replaced with a different one, can reduce collector appeal even when the replacement looks attractive.
- A 10x watchmaker loupe helps you inspect printing edges and lume texture under magnification. It can reveal visible inconsistencies, but it cannot authenticate a watch or replace a professional opinion.
Hands and lume
- Check that the hands match the reference and period. Replacement hands are common, and mismatched hand styles are a frequent sign of past repair.
- Compare lume aging across the hands and dial. Uniform aging across parts that were made together is more consistent with originality than patches of different color.
Case and bezel
- Heavy polishing softens the case edges and lugs and can erase the original geometry. Metal removed by polishing cannot be restored.
- Look for rust, pitting, and signs of water ingress such as fogging under the crystal or staining on the dial feet.
- Check that the bezel and crown are correct for the reference and that the crown fits and seals properly.
Bracelet and clasp
- Confirm the bracelet or strap, clasp, and end links match the reference. Mismatched bracelets are common and can change the value meaningfully.
Movement
- Ask whether the movement has been serviced, replaced, or altered, and request the movement serial or caliber information where it can be safely shared.
Step 4: Separate “running” from “serviced”
A watch that runs when you see it is not necessarily mechanically healthy. It may be running with worn parts, incorrect regulation, or a service that was poorly done. Treat running condition as an observation only.
A dated service invoice is more useful than a general claim of recent service. Look for the name of the watchmaker or workshop, a description of what was done, and which parts were replaced. Ask for the replaced parts to be returned to you, since this is a standard request in servicing practice and it lets you verify what was changed. If the service history is unknown, assume that a full service will be needed and include that cost in your offer.

Please slightly adjust the distance between the lens (monocular) and the object to focus and get the best clarity.

- Multifunctional Magnifying Glass. Ideal headband magnifier for watch rapair. Trusted by jewelers, electricians, watchmakers, scale modeler, and hobbyists. Also suitable for micro-soldering, circuit board repairs, gem cutting, model building, coin collection.
Step 5: Adjust for completeness and the cost of the sale
Box, papers, receipts, service records, and documented ownership can support a case for a higher value, but their relevance depends on the watch and on whether they can be verified. An original box with mismatched or unverifiable papers adds less than the same box with papers that match the case number.
The sale channel also changes the net figure. Compare the total you will pay or receive, not the headline price.

When you compare watches side by side, use the same five axes for each: the exact reference and configuration; originality and correctness of each component; dial and case condition; movement condition and service documentation; and accessories, provenance, and sale channel costs. Score or weigh them in whatever way suits your decision, but make the basis explicit. No validated numeric scoring system or standard percentage adjustment exists for these factors, so any formula you build is your own judgment and should be labeled that way.

Buyer checklist
- Ask for clear photographs of the dial, all case sides, the caseback, the clasp or bracelet, and any papers, plus the reference and serial details where the seller is comfortable sharing them.
- Ask which parts have been replaced, whether the dial, hands, bezel, crown, bracelet, or movement, and request the documentation for each change.
- Request dated service records and a written condition report. A “running” watch is not a guarantee of health.
- Compare completed sales rather than relying on asking prices or auction estimates.
- Before bidding, calculate the total cost, including the sale’s published buyer’s premium and fees and an allowance for likely service or repair.
- For an important purchase, arrange an inspection by a qualified watchmaker or a specialist. Do not open the case yourself.
Seller checklist
- Gather service invoices, purchase paperwork, box and papers, and any provenance records.
- Photograph the watch as it is and disclose defects, replaced components, uncertain originality, and unknown service history.
- Avoid polishing or refinishing only to make the watch look newer. Polishing removes metal that cannot be restored, and a redial can reduce collector appeal.
- Ask a specialist whether documented service is worth doing before sale. The FORTUNA condition guide advises presenting the watch as found, and it notes that a specialist can identify exceptions where conservative, documented service helps.
- If you are servicing the watch, instruct the watchmaker in writing. FORTUNA’s guide includes the instructions “Please do not polish the case” and “please return any replaced parts.” These are suggested instructions to a watch servicer, not statements from a named individual.
Where to get a specific valuation
Patek Philippe’s official Watch Authenticity FAQ recommends the following: “We recommend that you contact an auction house or a dealer specialized in selling and buying older timepieces.” That guidance applies to Patek Philippe watches, but the same approach is sensible for any vintage watch whose identification or condition is uncertain. Ask the specialist for a written valuation that states the reference, the condition findings, and the assumptions behind the figure. A specific estimate from someone who has examined the watch is worth more than any general range.
Vintage Jewelry’s dealer guide makes the same practical point: generic ranges cannot value an unexamined watch, and reference-specific evidence and condition findings are what make a value defensible.
