Verify the seller’s identity, check the official hallmark or registration system that applies where you are buying, and get the item’s claims and policies in writing. If you plan to consign a piece, also require a signed agreement covering its custody, sale terms, payment, return, and responsibility for loss or damage. A hallmark, trade-body logo, or gem report addresses only a limited part of that decision; none establishes that a jeweller is honest or suitable to hold your property.
The right checks depend on your location. India’s BIS HUID system, UK hallmarking rules, and U.S. consumer guidance are different systems, not interchangeable worldwide.

What “credentials” can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single universal credential that proves a jeweller is trustworthy. Check several separate things: whether the business can be identified and contacted, whether the item’s precious-metal claims can be checked under the applicable official system, what independent complaint or reputation signals exist, and whether the seller’s written terms are clear.

- Product mark or report: A hallmark verifies a metal description within the relevant hallmarking scheme. A gemstone laboratory report describes technical characteristics within that report’s scope. Neither is a general certificate of the seller.
- Reputation and policies: Reviews, complaint searches, trade-body membership, invoices, and return terms are useful evidence to weigh together, not guarantees.
- Custody suitability: If you leave jewellery with a business, its ability and agreed responsibility to safeguard and return that particular piece matter independently of its product credentials.
Rules and official lookup tools vary by jurisdiction. Do not assume a jeweller needs the same licence or registration everywhere; for example, U.S. Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance offers seller-checking advice but does not create a universal jeweller-licensing requirement. How to check a jeweller before buying
1. Identify the business and check its track record
Ask for the seller’s full business name, physical or registered address, and a working contact method. If buying online, find out where the business is based: cross-border enforcement can be difficult. 2. Find the official system that applies to the item
Ask the seller which hallmark, registration, or assay system applies to the specific piece and where it was marked. Then use the relevant official source, rather than assuming a logo or an app from another country applies.

For a BIS-hallmarked article in India, BIS says the jeweller should have a magnifying glass with at least 10X magnification available to show marks. A loupe can make a small mark easier to read; it cannot establish that the mark is genuine or check the seller’s credentials. BIS hallmarking FAQ
3. Match the paperwork to the item
Get an itemized invoice and written return or refund terms before paying. For covered BIS-hallmarked precious-metal articles, BIS identifies invoice details including the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. BIS hallmarking FAQ
For gemstones, record the material claims that affect your decision—such as whether a stone is natural, laboratory-created, or treated, along with its stated weight or size and care requirements. The FTC advises consumers to get sales details and return policies in writing. FTC consumer guidance

4. Check any gemstone report’s scope
If the seller provides a grading or laboratory report, confirm that it corresponds to the actual stone and read what it does and does not establish. A GIA laboratory report provides technical information; it is not an appraisal or a guarantee of value, and GIA does not appraise jewellery. GIA guidance on appraisals and reports

How to vet an appraiser separately
An appraiser’s qualifications and independence are a separate question from the jeweller’s credentials. Before handing over an item or commissioning a valuation, ask:
- Are you independent, or employed by the seller or another interested party?
- Where did you receive appraisal training, what professional designations do you hold, and do you belong to appraisal groups?
- Do you have relevant experience with this kind of item and appraisal? Can you provide references?
- What will the report include, what is its purpose, and what assumptions or limitations will it state?
- Do you have insurance covering jewellery while it is in your possession?
- What is the fee, and when will the work be completed?
GIA says an appraisal report should identify its purpose, describe the item, state the value and assumptions or limitations, include disclosure statements, and identify the appraiser’s qualifications. Avoid treating “GIA certified appraiser” as a claim that GIA certifies appraisal values: GIA says it does not appraise, and its laboratory reports do not state appraisal value. What to put in a jewellery consignment agreement
Before leaving a watch, ring, or other piece for sale, verify the business as you would before buying, then document the item and the terms of custody. A hallmark or trade-body sign is not a substitute for a signed record of what the consignee has received and agreed to do.
Create a record of the piece and its condition
Prepare a dated inventory with clear photographs, identifying marks, dimensions, condition notes, and any report or appraisal supplied. Make sure both parties retain a signed copy. This is a practical safeguard, not a claim that every jurisdiction requires this particular format.

Have the agreement state the asking price, the lowest acceptable price, whether any price reduction requires your approval, commission and other charges, the consignment period, and when payment is due after a sale. Specify how an unsold item will be returned and by when.

Make custody and risk explicit
Write down who is responsible for loss, theft, or damage while the item is held and who must arrange insurance. Ask for proof of any claimed coverage; do not rely on a verbal assurance that the piece is insured or will be returned on demand. GIA specifically recommends asking an appraiser whether insurance covers jewellery in their possession. Consignment laws and contract requirements depend on location; the checklist above is practical due diligence, not a jurisdiction-neutral legal rule. If a dispute arises or the item is especially valuable, check the rules where the agreement is made.
Compare sellers on the points that matter
When deciding between shops, online sellers, or consignment offers, compare the evidence rather than relying on one badge or claim.
