To reduce the risk of buying a counterfeit or misrepresented pre-owned watch, verify the seller and the exact watch, have the watch and its components—including the movement—checked, and keep a detailed invoice. A serial number, box, papers, seller assurance, or visual checklist cannot prove authenticity on its own. For Rolex, the brand’s Certified Pre-Owned program is a documented route when the watch and retailer meet its requirements.
Start with the exact watch and seller
Identify what is actually being offered
Confirm the brand, model or reference, and the individual watch in the listing. Ask for clear images of the actual item and relevant details, rather than relying only on stock photos. Before completing the purchase, make sure the watch you receive is the one represented in the listing and transaction documents.

Assess the seller and channel
Prefer an authorized or otherwise clearly accountable seller. The Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy advises buying watches from authorized dealers in its counterfeit-watch guidance. A seller’s reputation or assurance is useful context, but it is not an examination of the watch itself.
Do not treat serial numbers, papers, or appearance as proof
A serial number, box, papers, or a convincing visual detail can be part of a watch’s documentation, but none substitutes for checking the exact watch and its parts. The Watch Register’s 2023 due-diligence guidelines call for checking the authenticity of the watch and all its components, including the movement.

Close visual examination may help flag questions, but it cannot independently certify a watch. A loupe is an optional aid for seeing small details, not an authentication solution. Do not let a matching serial number or a neat-looking exterior end the checks.
For Rolex, check whether the offer is genuinely Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program applies to eligible second-hand Rolex watches that are at least two years old and sold by Official Retailers participating in the program. Rolex says program watches return to its workshops, where the original configuration is verified and the watch is checked and authenticated; the watches are serviced and receive a two-year international guarantee. Rolex states, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” That is Rolex’s statement about Rolex watches, not a universal rule or a service offered for every brand. It also says of program watches: “Each pre-owned Rolex watch undergoes the same checks as newly purchased models in our after-sales service.” The statement refers to watches in the Certified Pre-Owned program; it does not mean every Rolex dealer provides a standalone authentication service. Rolex describes the program in its newsroom announcement.

If the watch is not being sold through a brand-certified program, arrange an inspection by a suitably qualified watch professional before committing to the purchase where possible. Agree in advance on what the inspection covers, including the movement and relevant components. The cited guidance does not establish one universal authentication process for all brands or identify a single independent provider that serves every buyer, so assess the professional and scope for the specific watch.

Compare offers on the checks and paperwork—not just the price
When weighing multiple listings, ask who authenticates the watch, whether that is the brand or an independent professional, and what the examination actually includes. Also compare whether the seller will document the transaction, whether service history and replaced parts are disclosed, and what guarantee or return terms apply. Service-history disclosure and return terms depend on the seller; confirm them directly rather than assuming they are included.

Get an invoice that identifies both the seller and the watch, including its serial number, and retain the listing and transaction correspondence. The Watch Register’s 2023 guidelines specifically call for an invoice identifying the seller and watch, including the serial number. Documentation supports accountability; it does not replace authentication.
