Before buying a vintage Vertex, identify the exact model and era, then compare its dial, movement, and case markings with documented examples. Check the case and movement condition, ask for service evidence, and weigh the seller’s documentation and return terms against the total cost. The wartime Vertex WWW is especially well documented, but Vertex made watches across several periods, so no single WWW example can authenticate every vintage Vertex.
First establish which Vertex watch it is
Vertex is not a single-model name. Its company history places its founding in 1912, large-scale Cal 59 W.W.W. production in 1944, closure in 1972, and revival and relaunch events between 2015 and 2017. Those milestones help frame a seller’s era claim, but do not establish the age or originality of an individual watch. See the Vertex heritage timeline.

Construction and movements also vary across the brand’s history. David Read’s January 2022 account in the British Horological Institute’s Horological Journal notes early Vertex watches with imported Swiss movements and British-made Dennison cases, as well as later Vertex/Revue products sharing Revue movements and manufacture. If a seller calls the watch a wartime WWW, ask what supports that identification. The BHI account says the WWW specification was approved in 1945, deliveries began in May after Germany’s surrender, and most watches were issued to the Army in the Far East. It describes the watches as intended for normal general service, not technical navigation. This context is useful when assessing dramatic claims about combat use or specialized navigation, but it cannot prove a particular watch’s history.

Compare a claimed Vertex WWW against documented details
Ask for sharp, well-lit photographs of the entire dial, movement, outside and inside caseback, and any case or lug serials. One detailed comparison is Noonans Mayfair’s catalogued Vertex WWW, sold on 15 September 2020. The auction description reports:
- A black Vertex-signed dial with broad-arrow marking, luminous Arabic numerals, an outer minute track, and subsidiary seconds.
- A signed 15-jewel movement marked “59.”
- A screw-down steel caseback marked WWW and with a broad arrow.
- Two case numbers: a manufacturer’s number and an alphanumeric military store number.
- A khaki nylon strap included in that sale setup; the catalog entry does not make a strap on another watch original.
These are comparison points from one auction lot, not a complete authentication formula. Parts may have been replaced, and the available historical sources do not establish a comprehensive protocol for authenticating every Vertex WWW. Ask the seller to account for visible differences rather than treating a matching detail as proof. Noonans Mayfair, Lot 285.

Inspect condition, especially the case
Examine the caseback, edges, and markings closely for corrosion, pitting, wear, or signs of alteration. Also look for a refinished dial, replacement hands, a damaged crystal, and a dirty or visibly compromised movement. Request close-up photos if the listing uses distant or blurry images; if condition materially affects your decision, arrange an independent watchmaker’s inspection.

Read’s BHI article reproduces a 1954 Ministry of Supply report describing a Vertex WWW caseback with severe pitting and corrosion. The report’s quoted description reads: “a typical corroded case back was examined. The sample was Vertex No. A.11872, returned from 1st Battalion, The Somerset Light Infantry and showing pitting and corrosion of considerable severity.” The BHI article attributes this to Ministry of Supply Corrosion Report No. 1309, W.W.W. Vertex (1954).

Historical “waterproof” wording in the WWW designation is not evidence that an aged watch is water resistant now. The cited historical sources do not document a current pressure test of any watch offered for sale. If modern water resistance matters to you, get an up-to-date assessment from a qualified watchmaker and follow that professional’s advice.
Ask about service, repairs, and running condition
A catalog description of a mechanical 15-jewel movement does not establish the condition or service history of another seller’s watch. Ask whether the movement has been serviced, when and by whom, whether it runs consistently, and whether the case has been opened or repaired. Request a receipt or service report if one is available. If service cannot be documented, factor the uncertainty and any likely assessment or repair into your decision rather than assuming the watch is ready for regular wear.

Check the seller’s evidence and terms
- Request unedited, in-focus detail photos and an explanation of any mismatch between the watch and the seller’s model or era claim.
- Ask for provenance if the seller makes a military-issue, unit, or combat-use claim; distinguish documented history from an unsupported story.
- Ask the seller to disclose known repairs, replacement parts, and changes to the dial, hands, movement, or case.
- Read the return terms before paying, including whether you can have the watch inspected and what happens if it is materially different from the description.
Claims such as “all original,” “never serviced,” or “military issued” need evidence. Historical references can help you assess plausibility, but they cannot verify a particular seller’s watch or provenance.

Noonans recorded a £700 hammer price for its catalogued Vertex WWW example on 15 September 2020. That is a result for one watch at a specific historical auction, not a current price guide or a valuation of another listing. The Vertex heritage timeline also states that 4,652 W.W.W. Cal 59 watches were delivered during preparations for D-Day; that is the brand’s historical account, not a measure of the present-day supply or value of surviving examples.

When comparing listings, use the same axes rather than the name alone:
