Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not rely on a watch’s appearance, box, papers or a single certificate to decide whether it is genuine or safe to buy. Identify the exact model and identifiers, compare them with the documents, check the watch’s lost-or-stolen status close to the transaction, and arrange an in-person examination by a qualified watchmaker or specialist if anything important remains uncertain. These checks answer different questions: authenticity is not the same as originality, condition, ownership history or theft status.
What should you verify before buying?
For an art-inspired luxury watch, verify the specific object and the seller’s claims—not just whether the design looks plausible. Start with the maker, model or reference, edition, claimed production period, materials, movement and identifiers. Then examine the paper trail, theft status, physical condition and any stated design-origin story as separate matters.

For a Cartier Crash, Cartier says buyers can be assured of authenticity when purchasing through a Cartier boutique or authorized dealer, but that it cannot provide information or authentication for pieces acquired outside those channels. That is Cartier’s stated policy, not a universal rule for other makers. Check the relevant maker’s current policy for any other watch.
How do you identify the exact watch?
Record the object’s details
Ask for clear photographs of the complete watch, its markings, accessories and paperwork. Record the maker, model or reference, edition or limited-series number, case material, dial, movement or calibre, approximate production date and every engraved or documented identifier. If a movement photograph is supplied, it should have been taken safely by a professional; do not open the watch yourself.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare those details against maker or specialist records where available. Check whether the configuration and claimed period make sense together, and whether the identifiers on the watch match those on its documents. A photograph or matching serial number alone cannot establish that every component is genuine or original.
Protect private identifiers
Share serial numbers only with the seller, relevant manufacturer or service provider, specialist, and database-check provider as needed. Avoid posting full identifiers publicly; keep copies of the photographs and records used in your decision.
How can you assess the ownership and document trail?
Ask for a traceable sale and history
Request a dated invoice or bill of sale identifying the seller and the watch. Ask what the seller knows about prior owners, servicing, restoration and any replacement or modified parts. The history may be incomplete, especially for an older watch; distinguish what is documented from what the seller merely believes or has been told.

Cross-check the paperwork
Compare the watch’s identifiers and model details with warranty or guarantee cards, service records, edition certificates, receipts and any other records offered. Note discrepancies and ask for an explanation supported by documentation. A box and papers can corroborate a claim, but their presence does not by itself prove that the watch is authentic, that the papers belong to that watch, or that the seller has the right to sell it.
How do you check whether a watch is reported lost or stolen?
Search all relevant unique identifiers in an established lost-or-stolen watch database immediately before each transaction, and retain the result. THE WATCH REGISTER advises checking every pre-owned luxury watch for each transaction, including one sold with its box and papers or one checked previously. Resolve any match, ambiguity or identifier mismatch before paying.
A no-match result means the searched record was not flagged in that database at that time. It does not prove authenticity, establish a clean ownership chain, or rule out an unreported loss. The check is a status search, not a physical examination; treat it as one part of the decision rather than a certificate that the watch is genuine.

When should a specialist inspect the watch?
For a significant purchase—or whenever the movement, markings, components, condition or documents raise questions—make the sale contingent on an in-person examination by a suitably qualified watchmaker or specialist. Agree in advance what will be examined and obtain the opinion in writing. Ask the examiner to state whether the case was opened, what parts appear replaced or modified, and what the opinion does and does not cover.
Do not open a luxury watch at home. Patek Philippe advises that a case back should be removed only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. Cartier’s UK warranty terms identify unauthorized opening, alteration and repair among exclusions, and warn that a removed or illegible original serial can affect coverage. Those are brand- and policy-specific instructions; follow the relevant maker’s current guidance for the watch in question.
Certification processes also differ. Chrono24 describes its Certified process as including a verified watchmaker, a functionality check involving opening the case, an authenticity review, a theft check and review of included box and papers. That describes the platform’s own process, not a universal standard or guarantee; its service is available only in certain countries.

What does a certificate, service record or warranty actually prove?
Read the issuer, date, scope and exclusions of every document. A record may address only one part of the purchase. Use this distinction when assessing what a document can support:
| Evidence or check | What it may establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Lost-or-stolen database result | Whether the searched identifier was flagged in that database when searched. | Authenticity, complete ownership history, or that an unreported loss did not occur. |
| Service record | That the issuer recorded specified work or observations at a particular time. | A complete provenance chain or a broad certificate of authenticity unless it explicitly says so. |
| Insurance valuation | An estimated insurance value, within the document’s stated scope. | Authentication or an appraisal. Cartier says its insurance valuation is not an appraisal or authentication. |
| Warranty or guarantee | Coverage under the issuer’s specific terms, if applicable. | Proof that every component is original or that the seller has an unbroken ownership record. Cartier says its official pre-owned limited warranty is not a guarantee or certificate of authenticity. |
| Marketplace certificate | The checks and commitments expressly described by that marketplace. | Anything outside the stated process, remedy, guarantee or geographic availability. |
One document rarely answers every relevant question. If a seller presents a certificate, ask who issued it, which identifiers and components were checked, whether the watch was physically inspected, which databases were searched, and what remedy is promised if a claim proves incorrect.

How should you evaluate an art-inspiration claim?
“Art-inspired” can mean a documented design source, an acknowledged commission, a visual resemblance or a later marketing description. Treat those claims as distinct from the watch’s authenticity and ownership history. Look for reliable maker or designer documentation rather than accepting repeated catalogue lore as proof.

Phillips catalogue essays recount competing origin stories for the Cartier Crash and describe the Salvador Dalí connection as mistaken in one catalogue. That is reason to qualify the story, not definitive proof of every design decision. Likewise, the Dalí Museum states that its employees do not authenticate, appraise, verify or confirm provenance for artworks; a museum association or resemblance to an artwork cannot authenticate a watch or establish its ownership history.
What should you compare before committing?
Assess the transaction across these independent dimensions, and decide what evidence is still missing before money changes hands:
- Seller and transaction: Is the seller identifiable, and will they provide a dated sale record?
- Object and documents: Do the reference, edition and identifiers agree across the watch and paperwork?
- Status: Were all relevant identifiers checked in a lost-or-stolen database close to this transaction?
- Physical assessment: Has a qualified specialist inspected the watch where authenticity, originality or condition is uncertain?
- Condition and service: Are known repairs, replacements, modifications and service records described clearly?
- Document scope: Does each certificate or warranty state exactly what it covers and what it excludes?
If a material mismatch, database flag or unresolved claim remains, pause the purchase until it is explained and independently verified. Keep the seller’s written statements, transaction documents, database result and specialist opinion together with your records.
