The reliable way to confirm a Swiss luxury watch is genuine and under warranty is to buy from, or route every question through, the watchmaker’s own official channel: an authorised retailer listed by the brand, the brand’s service centre, or its certified pre-owned program. Serial numbers, boxes, papers, a Swiss Made mark, and a visual inspection can all support a purchase, but none of them settles authenticity on its own. Warranty coverage is also brand-specific, market-specific, and date-specific, so the terms that apply are the ones the manufacturer publishes for your watch and purchase.
Start with the seller, not the watch
Most authenticity problems are settled before the watch is ever inspected. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH advises buyers to visit an authorised specialist retailer, arguing that this gives assurance of a genuine product, access to proper advice, and the manufacturer’s warranty. Its consumer guidance on where to buy is published at https://www.fhs.swiss/eng/howtobuy.html.
Check the brand’s official retailer directory
A seller’s claim that it is “authorised” is not enough. Open the brand’s own website, find its retailer or boutique directory, and confirm that the exact business name and address appear there. Rolex states that new Rolex watches are sold exclusively through Official Rolex Retailers and that these retailers warrant authenticity for new watches. Its directory is reached from the brand’s own site; a logo on a third-party marketplace does not establish the relationship.
Online purchases
For online orders, the FH recommends buying through the brand’s official site or an approved representative. If a marketplace listing names an authorised dealer, search for that dealer in the brand’s directory independently and contact the dealer through the details listed there, not the ones in the listing.

Pre-owned and private sales
Pre-owned watches have no seller-side guarantee of authenticity unless a specific program or dealer provides one in writing. Before paying, ask the seller who performed any authentication, whether the brand itself inspected the watch, and what written coverage follows the sale. A “box and papers” set is not a substitute for either answer.
Why a visual check cannot settle authenticity
Checking the dial, bezel, crown, movement finishing, and engravings is worth doing, but it is not a verdict. Rolex’s official FAQ says that authenticating a watch requires skill, training, know-how, and special equipment, and that a visual check or a consumer magnifier cannot replace that assessment. Its Certified Pre-Owned certification page goes further: “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” A watchmaker’s loupe is a reasonable tool for looking closely at visible details, but it can only help you notice something that needs a professional look. It cannot authenticate a watch.
The practical consequence is that the questions you ask should be about what the brand or an authorised service centre can verify from the watch and its documents. Ask them what they need from you before you send or hand over the watch, and use the contact details on the official brand site. Do not post a watch’s full serial number in a public forum or listing.

What the documents prove, and what they do not
Documents are evidence to be checked against the brand’s records, not proof in themselves. The useful test is whether the identifying details on the paperwork correspond to the watch in hand and to what the brand can confirm.

Patek Philippe describes its Certificate of Origin as the original document delivered with each new watch. It identifies the watch by movement, case, and reference numbers, serves as the original warranty, and cannot be reissued as a copy. Compare every number on the certificate with the watch itself. A certificate that does not match, or a photocopy presented as the original, is a reason to stop and contact the brand.
Extract from the Archives (Patek Philippe)
Patek Philippe’s Extract from the Archives is a partial transcript from its archive. It is not the same document as a Certificate of Origin. The brand’s current FAQ at https://www.patek.com/en/service/frequently-asked-questions/extract-from-the-archives sets these conditions: the watch’s first-sale date must be more than 10 years before the request; requests are limited to one per watch in any 12-month period; and a CHF 500 service fee applies, refundable if the watch turns out to be ineligible. An extract confirms what the archive records about the watch. It does not prove every aspect of authenticity or the watch’s current condition.
Invoices and warranty cards
Ask for the original invoice and the completed warranty card or digital activation record, and confirm that the reference and serial details on those documents match the watch. The FH advises buyers to obtain a duly completed warranty certificate and the accompanying technical documents. A warranty card that was never completed, or was completed for a different serial number, may not support a claim later, even if the watch is genuine.
A practical verification sequence
- Identify the seller in the brand’s directory. Open the brand’s official website, go to its retailer or boutique directory, and confirm the seller’s name and address appear there. Do not rely on a link, logo, or the seller’s own claim.
- Request the full paper trail before paying. Ask for the invoice, the completed warranty card or digital activation record, and the reference and serial numbers. Compare each item against the manufacturer’s stated requirements.
- Ask for a brand or authorised service assessment. Contact the manufacturer or an authorised service centre through the official site. Ask what they can verify from the watch and documents, and what they need from you before any inspection.
- Confirm the warranty start date and proof required. Read the applicable terms and note the start date, duration, what proof is required, and what is excluded.
- Keep the purchase records together. Store the invoice, warranty card, activation confirmation, and any service receipts in one place. Future claims depend on them.
How to read warranty terms
Warranty terms differ in four ways that matter in practice: where the watch must have been sold, what you must do to activate it, what can void coverage, and when the period starts. Confirm each item in the brand’s current published terms before you rely on coverage.
- Authorised sale: Is coverage conditional on purchase from an official retailer?
- Activation: Must the card be fully completed, stamped, or activated online, and by when?
- Start date and duration: Is the period measured from the purchase date, the activation date, or the first-sale date?
- Exclusions: Which types of damage, loss, misuse, or wear are not covered?
- Repairs and parts: Does unauthorised work, a non-brand component, or a replacement part affect coverage?
- Where claims are made: Must the watch be presented at an official retailer or service centre, and does the guarantee apply across borders?
Rolex: five-year guarantee on qualifying new watches
Rolex describes a five-year international guarantee from purchase on qualifying new watches, in its official FAQ at https://www.rolex.com/en-in/watch-care-and-service/faq. Validity depends on sale by an Official Rolex Retailer, a fully completed guarantee card, and presenting that card with the watch at an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre. The FAQ lists exclusions including normal wear, loss, theft, misuse, non-Rolex additions or substitutions, and third-party work. Rolex also says the guarantee can be voided by unauthorised work or non-Rolex components.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned: two-year guarantee
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned watches are returned to Rolex workshops for detailed checks and authentication, including verification of the original configuration. Each includes a two-year international guarantee and distinct brand-issued paperwork. This is a brand-run program. It does not mean that every pre-owned Rolex, or any pre-owned watch from another brand, has gone through the same process. The certification process is described at https://www.rolex.com/en-gb/buying-a-rolex/rolex-certified-pre-owned/certification-process.
Date-specific rules: Frederique Constant
Frederique Constant’s published limited international warranty shows how a single brand’s rules can change with the purchase date. Watches bought before 21 April 2025 can use a completed and stamped certificate of authenticity. Watches bought after that date must be activated through the QR code on the eWarranty card. The warranty also requires the case-back serial number to remain intact and legible. The document is at https://frederiqueconstant.com/wp-content/uploads/documents/LIMITED-INTERNATIONAL-WARRANTY.pdf. These are one brand’s terms, and they illustrate why a rule from one watch or year should not be assumed to apply to another.

“Swiss Made” is not an authentication verdict
Swiss and Swiss Made are legally protected indications for watches, with criteria covering components, design, manufacture, assembly, and final inspection. Those criteria concern geographic origin requirements. They do not show that a particular branded watch is genuine, and they do not show that a watch is covered by its manufacturer’s warranty. The official explanation is published by watch.swiss at https://www.watch.swiss/eng/indications.html. Authenticate the branded watch through its manufacturer.
Buying or importing into Switzerland
If a purchase crosses Swiss customs territory, Swiss customs law applies. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security states that it is strictly prohibited to import into or export from Swiss customs territory counterfeited trademarks and counterfeited designs. Counterfeit goods may be confiscated and destroyed, and this includes used personal goods in tourist traffic. The customs guidance is at https://www.bazg.admin.ch/en/product-piracy-counterfeiting-customs-prohibition-switzerland. This rule is specific to Switzerland; check your own country’s customs rules separately.
Red flags and what to do next
- The seller is not in the brand’s directory, or the directory was reached through a link supplied by the seller. Contact the brand directly.
- The documents do not match the watch, including serial, reference, or movement numbers. Stop the transaction and ask the brand to confirm the records.
- The seller offers only a photocopy of a certificate, or a warranty card that was never completed. Ask whether the brand can reissue or activate coverage; for Patek Philippe, a certificate cannot be reissued as a copy.
- A warranty claim is refused because of prior repairs, non-brand parts, or a missing activation step. Request the exact clause in writing from the brand or service centre and compare it with the terms that apply to your purchase date.
- A certificate or extract is presented as proof of current condition. Ask for a brand or service-centre assessment of the watch itself.
