A ceramic watch case is made from an engineered, inorganic, non-metallic material that is shaped from fine powders and then sintered at very high temperature. It is not the glazed clay of a dinner plate. Manufacturers describe watch ceramics as lighter and harder than steel and highly resistant to physical and chemical influences. Against titanium, the evidence is more qualitative: titanium is described as lightweight and scratch-resistant, but no source places ceramic and titanium on the same measured scale. The claims below come from manufacturers and product pages, not from independent test results.
What “ceramic” means in a watch case
IWC Schaffhausen describes watchmaking engineering ceramics as inorganic, non-metallic materials made from purified raw materials. Its published account outlines the process in four stages:
- Purified ceramic raw materials are mixed into a homogeneous mass.
- The mass is shaped into the component.
- The shaped part is sintered at high temperature, and auxiliary materials volatilize, or evaporate out of the body.
- What remains is a stable ceramic body made of microscopic grains.
Because the starting powders and firing conditions vary, “ceramic” describes a family of materials rather than one recipe. IWC’s own examples show how different two ceramic cases can be.
Zirconium oxide
IWC states that it used specially hardened zirconium oxide ceramic for a watch case in 1986. That date is a manufacturer-reported milestone in the brand’s own history, not a measured performance benchmark.

Brown silicon nitride
IWC also describes a brown silicon nitride case, colored by mixing silicon nitride with titanium nitride. Its account says this case was sintered at 1800 degrees Celsius in an oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere under overpressure. The article is undated, and the figures describe that one manufacturing process. They do not describe how every ceramic case is made.
Ceramic against steel: what the maker claims
The most direct statement on the comparison comes from IWC’s article, which attributes the following sentence to Lorenz Brunner, Head of the Innovation and Predevelopment Department at IWC in Schaffhausen:
“These inorganic, non-metallic materials are lighter and harder than steel, but at the same time extremely resistant to physical and chemical influences”

This is an attributed manufacturer statement. It establishes IWC’s position that its engineering ceramics are lighter and harder than steel. It does not supply case weights, dimensions, hardness values, or a controlled test against any particular steel alloy. Read “harder” as a relative description of the material, not as a rating that predicts how a given watch will look after a year on the wrist.

The titanium reference point in the available sources comes from TAG Heuer’s product page for an Aquaracer with a titanium case and bracelet, which describes that grade 2 titanium as lightweight and scratch-resistant. Those are product descriptions. The sources do not state a weight, a hardness value, or a wear result for that titanium case, so there is no numerical basis for ranking it against ceramic or steel.
Side-by-side comparison
The table below sets out what each material is described as in the available sources. A “not stated” entry means the sources do not give that value for that material, and should not be read as a finding that the material performs equally well or poorly.

Steel’s row is thin because the sources treat steel as a reference point rather than as a subject of their own tests. The table should not be read as a complete three-way scorecard.
Scratch and impact: what the claims do and do not cover
Ceramic’s scratch resistance is the most frequently cited advantage, and it is real as a description of the material. It is not a guarantee. IWC uses promotional language about scratch resistance, but it also distinguishes between formulations. The shatterproof comparison applies to one silicon nitride ceramic, not to ceramic watches as a category.
Two further limits matter for a buyer. First, the sources do not contain an independent, matched breakage test of ceramic, steel, and titanium cases. Second, scratch behavior on any watch depends on its finish, alloy or ceramic grade, and any coating. A polished titanium surface and a satin ceramic surface can show wear differently even if the base materials behave as described. Treat the claims as a guide to what each material is designed to resist, not as proof that a particular case will stay unmarked.

Manufacturing and service trade-offs
IWC’s account describes ceramic case production as complex. It recounts that machining a particularly hard silicon nitride case required frequent replacement of diamond-tipped tools. Hardness that helps against scratches also makes the material expensive to shape, which is part of why ceramic cases are often priced and produced differently from steel or titanium cases.
The sources do not establish what this means for repairs. Repair costs, service intervals, and whether replacement ceramic parts are available across brands are not stated. If service access matters to you, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service center before buying.

Steel-and-ceramic Aquaracer
TAG Heuer’s US product page for the 43 mm Calibre 5 Automatic Aquaracer describes a steel-and-ceramic case and bezel, with a titanium caseback. Here the case is not entirely ceramic, and the bezel’s material is not the same as the caseback’s.
Titanium Aquaracer with ceramic bezel
A separate TAG Heuer product page for the same 43 mm Calibre 5 Automatic family describes a titanium case and bracelet with a titanium-and-ceramic bezel. A ceramic element on that watch is a bezel, not the case. These are product descriptions for specific references. Regional availability is not established by the sources, so check the listing for the market you buy in.
Before you rely on the label
Confirm each of these on the manufacturer’s specification for the exact reference:
- Case: the middle of the watch, which determines what most of the visible body is made from.
- Bezel: the rotating or fixed ring, which is often the only ceramic element.
- Caseback: the closed rear, which can use a different metal from the case.
- Bracelet or strap: the band, which may be a separate material.
- Inserts: any ceramic element on the dial or elsewhere, which is not the case.
If the listing says “ceramic” without naming the component, ask for the material breakdown before comparing it with a steel or titanium watch.
