The crown position does not dictate wrist choice; try the watch where it feels comfortable, then follow that model’s instructions to set it. For a smartwatch, check whether its settings let you specify both your wrist and the crown orientation.
What “left-handed watch” means
In this context, a “left-handed watch” means a watch whose crown—the small control used to operate or set the watch—is on the left side of the case, usually at 9 o’clock. It describes the design, not the wearer. You do not have to wear one on your right wrist, even if you are right-handed.

Most watches put the crown at 3 o’clock. Nixon identifies its 51-30 Chrono as an exception with the crown at 9 o’clock, a deliberate design choice that can reduce wrist discomfort during some activities and can suit people who wear a watch on the right wrist. Which wrist should you wear it on?
Try it on both wrists rather than choosing by handedness alone. With each wrist, check whether the case and crown press into your hand or wrist as you bend it, whether you can reach the crown with your opposite hand, and whether you can read the dial and use the controls easily. Notice, too, if you are likely to bump or press the crown during ordinary movement. These are practical comfort checks, not rules about the correct wrist.

A left-side crown may be easier to reach when the watch is on the right wrist, but the whole watch—not just crown access—should feel usable. If you already own the watch, wear it briefly on each wrist during normal activities before settling on a preference.
How to set a left-crown analog watch
The crown’s location does not guarantee that its positions or functions match another watch’s. On many analog watches, the crown is pushed in for normal running, pulled to an intermediate position for the date if the model has one, and pulled farther to set the time. Mechanical watches may also use the crown for winding. The exact arrangement varies, so identify the positions in the instructions for your specific model before turning or pulling the crown. - Find the model’s instructions. Look up the exact watch or movement and check what each crown position does. Seiko’s guidance begins with the practical advice to check the type of crown on your watch.
- Unlock a screw-down crown, if fitted. Follow the manual’s method to release it before operating. Do not force it; Seiko specifically cautions against forcing the crown. Seiko: Crown
- Set only the function you need. Use the position and procedure specified for the date, time, or winding. Date quickset precautions depend on the movement. For the watches covered by its instructions, STOWA warns against changing the date between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., when the movement may be advancing the date; that window is not universal. - Push the crown back in and secure it. If it screws down, screw it back onto its tube as directed. STOWA says this is necessary to ensure water resistance. STOWA watch instructions
Because crown functions and precautions depend on the model and movement, do not assume that a left-crown watch sets in the same sequence as another watch with the crown on the right.
How to set a smartwatch’s wrist and crown orientation
Some smartwatches have software settings for the wrist and crown orientation; the available choices and menu names differ by device. Citizen’s Gen2 touchscreen guidance asks users to set both, and its Hybrid Gen2 line has a separate orientation menu.
