Never force it. There is no universal turn count or winding schedule: the manufacturer’s manual is the authority for that movement.
How to wind a hand-wound watch
- Check the exact model and movement. Find its manual and confirm whether it is a fully hand-wound watch or an automatic watch that also allows hand winding. Instructions for one type or model should not be assumed to fit another.
- Prepare the crown. If the crown screws down, unlock it as the manual directs. Baume & Mercier advises removing the watch from your wrist while winding so the crown stem stays straight; this is that maker’s guidance, not a universal requirement.
- Wind in the prescribed position and direction. Keep the crown in the winding position and turn it slowly and evenly, following the manual. For example, Oris instructs owners of its hand-wound watches to turn the crown clockwise and evenly, while Cartier’s Crash Skeleton guide specifies winding clockwise with the crown pushed in. These are model-specific examples, not a rule for every watch.
- Stop at the specified full-wind cue. Use the manual’s stated indicator, natural stop, or resistance cue. If resistance becomes distinctly stronger, stop rather than trying to push past it.
- Secure the crown if required. Relock a screw-down crown as the model instructions specify before wearing the watch.
If the crown binds, the watch behaves unexpectedly, or you cannot identify a safe stopping cue, stop winding. Check the correct manual or ask a qualified watch service professional rather than applying extra force.

When should you stop winding?
Stop at the manufacturer’s full-wind cue. Hamilton says the manual-wind movements covered by its chronograph manual stop naturally and warns against forcing the crown. Baume & Mercier likewise says to stop when resistance is reached. Shinola’s Mechanic guide puts it plainly: “Always stop winding if you feel resistance.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not treat every hand-wound watch as if it has the same overwinding protection. Oris says its hand-wound movements have a protective mechanism, but that statement applies to Oris’s guidance; other makers emphasize stopping at resistance or the natural stop. Follow your watch’s own instructions, and do not force the crown even if you have read that a different movement has a protective mechanism.

Why turn counts and winding schedules vary
A crown’s turns and the interval between windings depend on the movement. Do not use another model’s figures as a target for an unidentified watch.
| Manufacturer and watch guidance | Winding direction or amount | Cadence or reserve stated |
|---|---|---|
| Hamilton manual-winding movements covered by its chronograph manual | About 50–60 full clockwise rotations; stop at the natural stop | Cadence and power reserve not stated in the cited instructions. Hamilton manual |
| Oris hand-wound watches | Turn clockwise and evenly until fully wound | Full winding once daily; Cal. 110+ is the stated exception, requiring full winding every 10 days. Oris help article |
| Baume & Mercier manual watches | Turn until resistance; do not force | Daily winding suggested; approximate reserve range of 40–90 hours for its manual watches. User instructions |
| Shinola Mechanic | Stop if resistance is felt | Minimum 42-hour reserve stated for the Mechanic. Winding guide |
The figures above describe the named makers’ guidance and models, not a general specification for mechanical watches. A power reserve is how long a fully wound watch is expected to run; it does not tell you how many turns your watch needs. Use the manual’s winding procedure and schedule for your exact watch.

Special case: an automatic watch with hand winding
Some automatic watches can also be wound at the crown. Seiko’s instructions for Cal. 4R57, for example, cover an automatic mechanical watch with a manual-winding function and explain how to operate its screw-down crown. That example does not make automatic and fully hand-wound movements interchangeable: confirm the exact model’s instructions for crown position, direction, and crown locking.
