Keep an Oyster Perpetual clean with occasional gentle washing, protect its water resistance by screwing the crown down fully, and rinse away salt and sand after time at the beach or in the sea. For accuracy concerns, uncertain water resistance, or polishing, use Rolex’s official service network rather than attempting a repair at home.
How to clean a Rolex Oyster Perpetual
For routine care, wipe the watch occasionally with a microfiber cloth. When it needs a wash, Rolex recommends soapy water and a soft brush for the case and metal bracelet. Before cleaning, screw the winding crown down properly against the case. Rolex’s official Caring for your Rolex guidance says: “Before cleaning your watch, always ensure that the winding crown is screwed down properly against the case to guarantee waterproofness.”

- Check that the winding crown is screwed down against the case before the watch gets wet.
- Wash the case and metal bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush.
- Rinse away the soap and dry the watch gently.
A microfiber cloth and a soft-bristled brush are useful optional tools; Rolex’s guidance does not endorse a particular third-party product. Do not use abrasives or scratch-removal methods.

Rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure to seawater or beach sand. This removes salt and sand from the case and bracelet. Make sure the crown is screwed down before rinsing.

Can you swim or dive with an Oyster Perpetual?
Rolex states that Oyster Perpetual wristwatches are waterproof to at least 100 metres (330 feet). That is a model rating, not confirmation that a particular watch remains sealed today. The crown must be properly screwed down, and the Oyster case must be properly sealed.
Specifications vary by reference and production year. For example, Rolex lists a 100-metre rating and a screw-down Twinlock crown for reference 126000, the Oyster Perpetual 36. The collection includes 28, 31, 34, 36 and 41 mm cases, but those dimensions and the 126000 specifications should not be assumed to apply to every version. Check your exact reference in Rolex’s user guides.

If the watch has been damaged, opened, or its seal condition is uncertain, the rating alone does not establish that it is safe to put in water. Do not test it by immersing it; ask an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre for advice.
How to wind it if it has stopped
If the watch has stopped after being set aside, Rolex’s general instructions say to wind it manually before setting it. The general guidance specifies at least 25 clockwise turns for adequate partial winding, followed by carefully screwing the crown back down. Follow the user guide for your specific reference, since operation can vary by model.

What to do if it runs fast or slow
Do not try to diagnose or regulate the movement yourself. Rolex advises contacting an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre for technical advice. An Official Rolex Jeweler can test accuracy and, if needed, regulate the balance wheel.

Rolex’s FAQ says professional polishing of the case and bracelet should be performed only by an Official Rolex Service Centre. Avoid home polishing cloths, abrasives, and scratch-removal techniques, which can alter the finish.

There is no single reference-specific service interval established here for every Oyster Perpetual and every pattern of use. Ask Rolex about the appropriate service for your particular watch, taking its reference and condition into account. The official care and service information is the place to start.
