Start with the watch’s manual and movement instructions. In general, keep it clean and dry unless its rating permits water exposure, avoid strong magnetic sources, and seek professional help if its performance or condition changes.
Use the instructions for your exact watch
“Mechanical” describes how a watch is powered; it does not tell you whether it is safe to wash, how its crown works, whether daily wear keeps it wound, or when it needs service. Check the manual for your model and caliber before winding, exposing it to water, or arranging maintenance. Seiko’s manuals, for example, address daily care, water resistance, magnetic resistance, band care, accuracy, and after-sales service separately: 2R05 / 2R06 instructions and 6R55 / 6R5J instructions.

Winding: daily wear may not be enough
Automatic watches use wrist movement to wind the mainspring, but how much winding is needed—and how to wind a stopped watch—depends on the movement and model. Rolex says of its own automatically winding watches, “When you wear your Rolex daily, you don’t need to wind it.” That is Rolex-specific guidance, not a rule for every automatic watch. If your watch stops or loses power, follow its manual for crown handling, winding, and setting rather than applying another brand’s procedure.
Cleaning and water exposure
Check the rating before using water
Read the water-resistance marking and the manual for your specific watch before taking it into a shower, pool, or sea. A depth rating does not, by itself, establish that every kind of water exposure is appropriate; construction, condition, and the manufacturer’s instructions matter. Do not assume that a mechanical watch is water-resistant because another watch is, or because a generic product description uses that term.

For its own model families, Rolex states that Oyster Perpetual models are rated to at least 100 metres and Perpetual 1908 models to 50 metres. These are Rolex-published specifications for those model families, not general standards for mechanical watches. See Rolex’s care guidance and check the instructions for your own watch.
Clean only as the manufacturer permits
Rolex recommends occasionally wiping its watches with a microfiber cloth and cleaning the case and bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush. Its guidance says to make sure the winding crown is screwed down properly before cleaning, and to rinse a Rolex with fresh water after sea exposure to remove salt and sand. These directions apply to Rolex watches; do not use them as permission to wash another watch unless that watch’s instructions allow it. A cloth can remove surface marks without establishing that the watch can safely get wet.

Keep magnetism in mind if timekeeping changes
Magnetism can cause a mechanical watch to gain or lose time. Seiko lists phones, speakers, magnetic clasps, hair dryers, and electric razors among possible sources. It also says that a mechanical watch affected by magnetism can remain magnetized after it is moved away from the source, and recommends contacting an Authorized Seiko Service Center for demagnetization. If your watch’s timekeeping changes noticeably, check its manual and contact the manufacturer’s service channel or a qualified watchmaker rather than attempting an improvised repair. There is no single service interval established here for all mechanical watches. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for your model and movement. Rolex recommends periodic professional service through an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center and says its watches should be serviced approximately every 10 years, depending on model and real-life use. That interval is Rolex’s recommendation, not a schedule to apply to other brands. Rolex explains its recommendation in its service FAQ.

Rolex states: “To guarantee continued accuracy and waterproofness, Rolex recommends that you periodically return your watch to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center for professional servicing.” For any brand, arrange professional evaluation if accuracy changes markedly, the crown or case is damaged, or you are unsure whether the watch’s water resistance remains reliable.
