Wind a mechanical watch according to its exact movement instructions: crown direction, turn count, and stopping point are model-specific. First identify the caliber and whether the watch is manual-wind or automatic; then use its manual rather than borrowing a winding count from another watch. Winding keeps the movement running, but it does not replace proper care or servicing.
What winding does—and whether your watch needs it
A mechanical watch runs on energy stored in its mainspring. A manual-wind watch is charged by turning the crown. An automatic watch can wind its mainspring through wrist movement, and some automatic movements also allow hand winding. For example, Seiko describes its 4R35/4R36 watch as “an automatic mechanical watch with a manual winding mechanism.” That description applies to the cited watch, not every automatic model.

Check the watch’s instructions to confirm its winding method and whether manual winding is supported. If you wear an automatic watch regularly, wrist motion may keep it running, but the result depends on the movement and how the watch is worn. When it is off the wrist, it will run only as long as its remaining power reserve lasts.

How to wind it safely
- Identify the watch and caliber. Find the model or caliber marking and locate the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact movement. Follow those instructions for winding direction, crown operation, and when to stop.
- Unlock a screw-down crown, if fitted. Unscrew it as directed before winding. Do not pull the crown into a time- or date-setting position unless the manual says to do so.
- Turn the crown as specified. Use the stated direction and the manufacturer’s turn count or stopping condition. Do not treat a count for another brand or caliber as a safe substitute.
- If the watch has stopped, wind gently. A fully unwound movement may need several turns before it starts. Seiko notes for the 4R35/4R36 that it may not start immediately because mainspring torque is low at the beginning of winding. Give it time; do not force the crown.
- Secure the crown again. If it screws down, return it to the locked position according to the instructions. Rolex says screwing the crown back down is important to maintaining water resistance.
If the crown feels unusually stiff, slips, or behaves abnormally, stop winding and ask a qualified watchmaker for help. Applying more force can turn a minor concern into damage.

Why there is no universal turn count
Manufacturers give different instructions for different movements, even within the broad category of mechanical watches. For instance, Rolex’s care page specifies at least 25 turns for adequate partial winding, while its FAQ says about 20 turns to get a stopped Rolex going. These are Rolex-specific directions from separate pages, not a general rule or a count to combine.
Other examples also differ: Seiko’s 4R35/4R36 instructions say the watch cannot be wound counterclockwise and that turning further after it is fully wound will not break the spring. Seiko’s 5R65/5R66 instructions describe that movement as configured so the mainspring cannot be overwound, while advising against excessive crown operation. These details do not establish how another movement behaves. Use the instructions for your exact caliber, and stop if the crown does not feel or turn as expected.

- ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
- IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
- OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
- CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.
How long a wound watch runs
Run time depends on the movement and model. Seiko lists about 41 hours when its cited 4R35/4R36 caliber is fully wound. Rolex says a set-aside watch can retain charge for up to 70 hours, depending on the model. These manufacturer figures are examples, not typical or average values for all mechanical watches.
To find out how long your own watch can remain off the wrist, check its model-specific manual or manufacturer information. If it stops before the expected reserve, confirm that it was wound or worn as instructed; if the problem persists, have it assessed by a watchmaker.

How often should you wind an automatic watch?
There is no single daily winding schedule for all automatic watches. If you wear yours, wrist motion may wind it; if you do not wear it, its remaining reserve determines how long it keeps running. Hand-wind it only if the manufacturer permits it, and follow that movement’s instructions rather than assuming that daily crown turns are required.
For accuracy, consistency can matter: Seiko identifies wear duration, temperature, arm movement, and amount wound as factors affecting a mechanical watch’s accuracy, and recommends winding at a fixed time each day. That is guidance for its mechanical-watch characteristics, not a universal schedule or guarantee of improved accuracy.

Do you need a watch winder?
A winder is an optional convenience, not a requirement for care or a proven way to extend a watch’s life. Longines describes it as useful for people who rotate watches and want complications such as the date or moon phase to remain set. If keeping those settings is not important to you, letting an automatic watch stop and resetting it when you wear it may be simpler. Check the watch’s instructions before using a winder.
Winding is only one part of watch care
Correct winding helps a mechanical watch operate as intended, but winding alone does not guarantee longevity or replace servicing. Follow the maker’s care guidance for your model, and seek qualified watchmaking support if winding becomes difficult, the watch behaves unexpectedly, or it no longer runs as expected. The sources cited here do not establish a universal service interval.
