An antireflective (AR) coating reduces light reflected from a watch crystal, helping you see the dial or a feature such as the date more clearly. Its placement and wear characteristics vary by watch, so the maker’s description and care guidance matter more than assumptions about all AR coatings.
What does an antireflective coating do?
The treatment is applied to a watch crystal to reduce reflections at its surface. With less reflected light interfering with the view, the dial—or a detail on it—can be easier to read. Rolex says its Cyclops date lens uses a double antireflective coating to bring the date into clear focus: Rolex’s Cyclops Lens explanation.
Seiko made a product-specific claim for its 2012 Astron: its proprietary treatment on both sides of the glass prevented 99% of light reflection and helped keep the dial legible in bright light. That percentage is Seiko’s claim for that product, not a general performance figure for watch coatings: Seiko’s 2012 Astron announcement.
Where is the coating on a watch crystal?
Placement depends on the product. Seiko explicitly says the cited Astron’s glass is treated on both its front and back surfaces. Rolex describes a double antireflective coating on the Cyclops lens but does not identify the coated surfaces on that page. Its Submariner description says the sapphire crystal benefits from an antireflective coating, without specifying which side: Rolex Submariner.

These examples do not establish a rule for every model from either brand or for the watch industry as a whole. Check the specifications for the particular watch if knowing whether its coating is internal, external, or on both sides matters to you.
Is the coating as scratch-resistant as sapphire?
Not necessarily—and the cited maker descriptions do not establish how scratch-resistant a particular coating is. Rolex calls the sapphire used for its Cyclops lens “virtually scratchproof,” but that description of the crystal does not say the coating has the same durability. The available product descriptions also do not provide comparative scratch tests or a general durability ranking.

For a mark you can see on a crystal, the description alone may not establish whether it is damage to the crystal or its coating. Avoid assuming that sapphire’s stated scratch resistance applies equally to every layer on it; ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about your specific model.

Follow the maker’s care instructions for the exact watch. Rolex recommends occasionally cleaning its watches with a microfiber cloth. For its cases and bracelets—excluding leather straps—it also describes washing with soapy water and a soft brush, after ensuring the winding crown is screwed down. A clean microfiber cloth is a practical option specifically mentioned by Rolex, but cleaning is not a repair for coating damage. Do not use abrasive polishing or attempt to remove a coating based on general advice: the maker guidance cited here does not establish a DIY repair or removal method. For a visible mark or suspected damage, contact the watch’s maker or an authorized service provider. Rolex’s instruction that professional polishing of a case and bracelet should be done only by an Official Rolex Service Center concerns those components; it is not a general crystal-repair procedure.
