What a Timex water-resistance number means
Timex describes water resistance as the ability to resist water penetration to a certain degree. The metres indicate a pressure classification, not a promise that a watch is safe at that literal underwater depth. Water resistance is also conditional: Timex says it depends on intact parts, including the lens, push buttons and case. A printed rating alone cannot establish that an older, damaged, opened or repaired watch still resists water.

What activities Timex recommends at each rating
The following is Timex’s general US consumer guidance, not a guarantee that every watch carrying a rating has identical construction or condition. Check the instructions for the exact model before exposing it to water.

These activity recommendations come from Timex’s ratings page. They should not be read as permission to use a watch at the printed depth.
How to check the rating for your specific Timex
- Find the model’s manual. Timex recommends consulting the manual for the watch. Manuals are available through its manuals page.
- Check the watch itself. The rating may be printed on the dial or case back.
- Check the product specifications. If the manual and watch markings are unavailable, Timex’s watch-care guide directs readers to the product page and its specifications.
- Do not infer a rating from looks or collection name. Use the stated rating and the model’s own directions, not appearance.
If the watch has been damaged, opened or repaired, its original rating does not by itself confirm its present water resistance. Timex warns that use beyond a watch’s limit can cause damage; the available guidance does not establish that an old rating remains valid after a change in condition.

Can you press the buttons or crown underwater?
Follow the instructions for the exact model and avoid operating its buttons or crown underwater unless those instructions explicitly allow it. Timex’s official guidance is not fully consistent: its current US ratings page gives a 200m-rated watch as an exception to its general warning against pressing buttons underwater, while its 2024 care guide says to avoid pressing buttons or pulling out the crown unless the watch is a true dive watch rated 300m. An older manual warns against pressing any buttons underwater. Because those sources set different thresholds, the model’s manual is the useful rule for an individual watch. Timex advises rinsing a water-resistant watch with fresh water after exposure to salt water, which can harm watches. Rinsing is care, not a way to restore a damaged seal or make a watch safe for later immersion. See Timex’s care guidance.
