Samsung says most models named in its guidance can be used for fresh-water swimming or shallow water, but the original Galaxy Watch released in 2018 should not be used in pools or the sea. Samsung identifies the Galaxy Watch Ultra for saltwater use; rinse it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly afterward.
Check the guidance for your exact model and follow its manual. Water Lock helps prevent accidental inputs while swimming, but it does not improve water resistance. A hard impact or other damage can weaken a watch’s protection.
What Galaxy Watch water-resistance ratings mean
Start with the rating and activity guidance for the exact watch model. Samsung’s US support guidance describes most listed watches as suitable for fresh-water swimming or shallow water. For the Galaxy Watch Ultra, Samsung lists 10 ATM and IP68 ratings and says it can be submerged up to 100 meters under the rating’s test conditions.
| Marking or guidance | What Samsung’s guidance says | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 5 ATM / general swimming guidance | Samsung describes most listed models as suitable for fresh-water swimming or shallow-water use. Its support guidance describes most watches as tested under five feet of water for up to 30 minutes. | It is not permission to dive, use high-pressure water, or exceed the exact model’s activity guidance. |
| 10 ATM and IP68 | Samsung lists these ratings for the Galaxy Watch Ultra and says it can be submerged up to 100 meters under controlled conditions. | It is not permission for scuba diving or every water sport. |
| Original Galaxy Watch (2018) | Samsung says not to use this model in swimming pools or the sea. | Do not assume that all watches with the Galaxy Watch name share the same swimming guidance. |
The figures above are Samsung Electronics US Support’s stated rating and test-condition information, not a guarantee for a particular watch’s current condition. Samsung says water resistance is not indestructible; impact or damage can reduce it.

Can you swim with a Galaxy Watch?
For most models included in Samsung’s guidance, fresh-water swimming or shallow-water use is supported. Check the exact model’s manual, and do not assume that guidance for one generation applies to another. Samsung excludes the original Galaxy Watch released in 2018 from pool and sea swimming.
Samsung warns against diving, high-pressure water, and high-velocity water activities. Avoid treating a water-resistance rating as approval for activities involving strong currents, rapid movement, or impacts.
Turn on Water Lock before swimming
Samsung says Water Lock prevents accidental screen touches and wake-up gestures while swimming. It can be enabled from Quick Settings using the Water Lock icon, or from Settings under Advanced or Advanced features on some watches. Samsung says it can activate automatically when a swim workout starts. To turn it off, press and hold the Home/Power button and follow the on-screen instructions. Controls may differ by model.
Water Lock is an input-control mode, not an additional seal. It does not change the watch’s water-resistance rating.

Can you wear a Galaxy Watch in the sea?
Samsung specifically identifies the Galaxy Watch Ultra for saltwater use. After seawater exposure, rinse it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Samsung says the original Galaxy Watch released in 2018 should not be used in the sea.
For other models, check the exact model’s guidance rather than assuming saltwater use is supported. If a watch gets wet, Samsung recommends drying it thoroughly. Leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant, so do not swim or shower while wearing them.
Water activities and conditions to avoid
Samsung’s guidance warns against high-pressure water, diving, and high-velocity water activities. Do not use a Galaxy Watch for scuba diving. Follow the exact model’s manual and avoid activities or conditions that expose the watch to strong water pressure, abrupt temperature changes, or hard impacts.
Model-by-model water-resistance guide
| Model or group | Samsung guidance in the research | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | 10 ATM and IP68; Samsung says it can be submerged up to 100 meters and identifies it for saltwater use. | Rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly after seawater exposure. The rating is not permission for scuba diving or every water sport. |
| Most watches named in Samsung’s water-resistance guide | Samsung describes them as suitable for fresh-water swimming or shallow water. It gives a general test-condition figure of under five feet for up to 30 minutes for most watches. | Check the exact model’s manual and restrictions. Do not assume saltwater use is supported. |
| Original Galaxy Watch (released in 2018) | Samsung says not to use it in swimming pools or the sea. | Do not treat it as equivalent to later models for swimming. |
What to do after your Galaxy Watch gets wet
- Remove loose water. Samsung advises lightly shaking a wet watch to remove water before using it.
- Rinse after seawater exposure when applicable. Samsung instructs Galaxy Watch Ultra users to rinse away seawater with fresh water.
- Dry it thoroughly. Use a clean, soft cloth, as Samsung recommends.
- Use Water Lock controls as directed. If you used Water Lock, turn it off according to the watch’s on-screen instructions.
- Check the band. Leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant; follow the band’s care instructions.
- Do not rely on the rating after damage. If the watch has suffered a hard impact or other damage, check with Samsung and do not assume its original water resistance remains intact.
When water resistance may no longer be reliable
Water resistance can be reduced by impact or damage. Samsung also cautions that abrupt temperature changes and high-velocity activities can weaken protection. A watch that still powers on may nevertheless have compromised resistance. Check its condition and exact model guidance before exposing it to water.

Which Galaxy Watch is appropriate for swimmers?
For fresh-water pool swimming or shallow-water use, check whether Samsung’s guidance covers your exact model and whether the watch is undamaged. Do not buy a higher-rated model solely on the assumption that it is required for ordinary pool swimming.
If saltwater use is important, Samsung specifically identifies the Galaxy Watch Ultra water-resistance guidance for that use case. Rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it thoroughly afterward. The Ultra is not intended for scuba diving.
Do replacement bands affect water resistance?
A band does not change the water resistance of the watch case. Samsung notes that leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant, so do not swim or shower while wearing those bands. Check care instructions for the specific band material.
