Zenith took the El Primero beyond a single chronograph specification by developing it as a high-frequency movement platform: the original 1969 calibre ran at 5 Hz, later designs applied still higher frequency to fractional-second timing, and the El Primero 3600 in the DEFY Skyline Chronograph offers a distinct 1/10-second chronograph. The 50 Hz figure belongs specifically to the DEFY El Primero 21’s chronograph mechanism—not to every El Primero watch.
What “beyond the chronograph” means
The phrase describes an expansion of what the El Primero platform could do, not an abandonment of the chronograph. Zenith’s development story links high-frequency operation to finer time measurement and to watches that combine the chronograph with other complications. The key is to distinguish the movement family’s history from the specifications of particular calibres and models.

Where the El Primero began: 5 Hz in 1969
Zenith dates the El Primero’s unveiling to January 10, 1969. The company describes the original automatic movement as a high-frequency calibre operating at 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour. Those figures are two ways of expressing the same rate, not separate performance claims. Zenith’s timeline and later technical material retain that 5 Hz description for the original movement.
A high operating frequency supports measuring short intervals with a chronograph, but it does not by itself establish a watch’s accuracy in everyday use. The cited figures are manufacturer specifications and historical claims, not results from an independent comparative test.

How later calibres apply frequency differently
DEFY El Primero 21: a dedicated 50 Hz chronograph mechanism
Zenith says the DEFY El Primero 21’s chronograph calibre operates at 50 Hz and measures 1/100th of a second. This is a specific implementation within the El Primero lineage. It should not be read as the frequency of the original 1969 movement, or as a specification shared by every El Primero watch.
DEFY Skyline Chronograph: El Primero 3600 and 1/10-second timing
In an April 2024 announcement, Zenith said the DEFY Skyline Chronograph uses the El Primero 3600 and provides a 1/10-second chronograph function. That stated timing increment is different from the 1/100-second capability Zenith gives for the DEFY El Primero 21; the two watches should not be treated as interchangeable examples of one chronograph specification.

| Example | Movement or mechanism claim | Stated chronograph increment |
|---|---|---|
| Original El Primero, unveiled in 1969 | 5 Hz / 36,000 vibrations per hour, according to Zenith | Not stated in the cited Zenith materials |
| DEFY El Primero 21 | Chronograph calibre at 50 Hz, according to Zenith | 1/100th of a second, according to Zenith |
| DEFY Skyline Chronograph | El Primero 3600, according to Zenith’s April 2024 announcement | 1/10th of a second, according to Zenith |
What the newer DEFY examples show—and what they do not
Together, the examples show how Zenith has used the El Primero name across different technical applications: the original high-frequency automatic movement, a DEFY chronograph with a 50 Hz mechanism and 1/100-second measurement, and the Skyline Chronograph with the El Primero 3600 and 1/10-second timing. They illustrate development within a family, not a simple progression in which one figure describes every model.

Zenith’s 2026 DEFY announcements indicate that the collection continues to develop, including the DEFY Skyline Chronograph and Revival A3643. The announcement does not provide enough model-by-model technical detail to support a full specification comparison here. For a particular watch, check its exact reference and the official model page for movement details, dimensions, and local availability; these can vary by reference and market.

How to read an El Primero specification
- Separate frequency from timing increment. A movement’s stated frequency and a chronograph’s stated measurement increment are related technical ideas, but they are not the same specification.
- Look for the exact calibre and watch reference. The 50 Hz / 1/100-second figures apply to the DEFY El Primero 21 example; the 1/10-second claim applies to the DEFY Skyline Chronograph with El Primero 3600.
- Read manufacturer figures as specifications. Zenith is the source for the figures cited here; they are not an independent test of comparative accuracy or real-world performance.
