It can provide useful readings when fitted and used correctly, but it is bulky, its measurement routine requires several minutes of rest and careful posture, and it should never be treated as a diagnosis or a replacement for a validated upper-arm monitor.
The Huawei Watch D is an ingenious but highly specialized smartwatch. Its key feature is not a clever optical estimate: a miniature inflatable airbag built into the strap tightens around the wrist to take a cuff-style, oscillometric blood-pressure reading. That makes the Watch D unusually capable, but it also makes it thick, conspicuous, and much less casual to use than a normal smartwatch.
It can produce useful blood-pressure readings when the strap is fitted correctly and you follow the required resting and posture instructions. It is not a blood-pressure diagnosis, and Huawei describes it as a reference tool. If blood-pressure results will influence treatment or other medical decisions, use a validated upper-arm monitor and speak with a clinician.

| Phone compatibility | Android and iPhone pairing, with some feature differences by operating system and country |
The airbag strap is the entire point
Most smartwatch health features use optical sensors and software to monitor or estimate metrics such as pulse. The Watch D takes a more mechanical approach to blood pressure. Its dedicated strap contains a small pump and inflatable airbag, so the watch applies pressure around the wrist in a way that resembles a conventional cuff. The result is an oscillometric measurement rather than a purely optical estimate. Stuff’s hands-on report identifies this physical mechanism as the Watch D’s central achievement.

That design makes the watch easy to demonstrate. Start a reading and the airbag visibly—and distinctly—tightens around the wrist. The pump is reportedly quiet, but the sensation is firm enough to remind you that this is a medical-style measurement device hidden inside a smartwatch strap.
It also creates limitations that are easy to miss in a product listing. The airbag needs reliable contact and pressure, so strap fit matters. Huawei supplies medium and large airbag straps plus a wrist-measuring aid. This is not a standard watch band that can be replaced with any thin third-party strap without potentially losing the Watch D’s defining function.
Taking a blood-pressure reading is a short procedure, not a wrist glance
The Watch D makes cuff-style monitoring more convenient than unpacking a separate device, but it does not make blood-pressure measurement instant or posture-free. Huawei’s instructions call for a controlled setup:
- Rest first. Sit quietly for about five minutes before measuring.
- Fit the dedicated strap correctly. Select the appropriate airbag size and make sure the watch is in consistent contact with the wrist.
- Support the measuring arm. Bend the arm and use the other hand to support the elbow.
- Keep the watch at heart level. The watch should not hang below the heart or be held artificially high.
- Stay quiet and still. Do not treat the reading as something to perform while walking, talking or moving around.
- Wait for the result. Inflation and measurement take roughly 30 seconds to one minute. The airbag then deflates and the watch displays systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and pulse.
Huawei also recommends avoiding measurements soon after exercise, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, bathing, eating or an emotionally stressful event. Those restrictions are not a minor footnote: they define the conditions under which the readings are intended to be comparable. A reading taken immediately after climbing stairs is not equivalent to one taken after sitting quietly.

Measure at similar times, use the same posture and avoid changing the strap tightness from one session to the next. The Huawei Health app can then display longer-term charts rather than leaving you to interpret isolated numbers on the watch.
How accurate is the Huawei Watch D?
Huawei has described an approximate error margin of ±3 mmHg. That figure should be attributed to Huawei rather than treated as a guarantee for every user, wrist or measurement condition.
Independent hands-on observations are encouraging but limited. In a multi-week comparison, Wareable compared the Watch D with a Kinetik monitor and found readings generally in line or within Huawei’s claimed margin when movement and posture problems were controlled. Another hands-on comparison reportedly found the Watch D broadly in the same range as an Omron upper-arm device, while also observing meaningful variation in both devices.
Those comparisons answer a practical question—whether the Watch D can produce plausible readings in ordinary use—but they do not establish independent clinical validation for every population or situation. They are not a reason to call the watch diagnostic equipment.

It says the watch is a reference tool and identifies strap choice, fit, posture, rest and environmental conditions as factors that affect results. Huawei also lists movement, abnormal heart rate, arrhythmia, severe arteriosclerosis, cold wrists and some medical conditions among circumstances that can lead to a failed or absent reading. Huawei’s support documentation should be checked for the relevant market and user situation.

What to use as a reference
If you are tracking a known blood-pressure issue, keep a validated upper-arm blood-pressure monitor available rather than relying on the Watch D alone. Compare devices under similar conditions and ask a healthcare professional how to interpret discrepancies. The upper-arm monitor is the safer reference for decisions about medication, diagnosis or urgent symptoms.
Do not use any smartwatch reading to dismiss symptoms such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, confusion or signs of a stroke. Seek appropriate medical care instead.
Design: functional and premium-feeling, but undeniably bulky
The original Watch D has a rectangular case, aluminium-alloy construction, curved 2.5D glass, a 1.64-inch AMOLED display and two physical buttons. The materials and presentation make it look more considered than a conventional medical cuff, but the airbag strap dictates the proportions. It is boxy, thick-looking and conspicuous on the wrist.
That produces a fair split in the review experience. If you judge it as a discreet everyday watch, the design is a weakness. If you judge it as a portable cuff that also happens to display notifications and workouts, the industrial shape makes more sense. It is functional rather than fashionable.
Comfort depends heavily on wrist size and tolerance for a firm, specialized strap. The buckle and airbag need to sit consistently for readings, so the ideal fit is not necessarily the loosest or most comfortable smartwatch fit. Owners should also treat the strap as a component of the measurement system, not merely an interchangeable accessory.
Replacing the strap
If you own the watch or are buying used, check the condition and size of the Watch D replacement airbag strap before completing the purchase. Confirm that it is genuinely compatible with the original Watch D, that the airbag is intact and that the listing identifies the correct medium or large size. An ordinary replacement band may keep the watch on your wrist but will not necessarily preserve blood-pressure functionality.
IP68 does not mean swim-ready
The Watch D has an IP68 rating rather than the 5ATM rating found on some Huawei sports watches. That is best understood as protection against ordinary water exposure, such as splashes or possibly showering under appropriate conditions—not an invitation to swim with it. Wareable’s interpretation is similarly cautious. Keep it out of swimming sessions and avoid treating its water rating as equivalent to a dedicated swim watch.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBattery life is one of its better everyday qualities
Huawei claims up to seven days of battery life with multiple blood-pressure readings and exercise tracking. Reviewers generally regarded endurance as a strength. The important qualification is the phrase up to: frequent measurements, GPS workouts, notifications, screen settings and health monitoring can all reduce runtime.
For this type of product, good battery life matters beyond convenience. A watch that needs charging every night is less useful for health trends and overnight sleep tracking. The Watch D’s claimed maximum is therefore a positive, even though actual results will vary with use.

It is a health watch first and a general smartwatch second
Alongside blood pressure, the Watch D offers ECG, heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, exercise profiles, notifications, music controls and Huawei Health trend charts. That is enough for routine activity and health logging, and the Android/iPhone compatibility tested by Wareable makes it more flexible than phone-brand-locked alternatives. Feature availability can still vary by operating system and country.
The trade-off is that the Watch D does not deliver the complete smartwatch experience offered by many similarly priced mainstream watches. Reviews criticized its limited app ecosystem, lack of music storage and reduced selection of everyday smartwatch conveniences. It is not the obvious choice if your priorities are third-party apps, onboard music, polished contactless features or a broad selection of sports and lifestyle tools.
This is also why comparisons with Apple, Samsung, Garmin and Huawei’s less specialized watches need to be made carefully. Those products may be better all-round wearables, but they do not necessarily offer the same cuff-style blood-pressure hardware. The Watch D’s value rests on whether that one specialized function is important enough to justify the compromises.
Original Watch D or Watch D2?
The original Watch D remains the subject of this review, but the Huawei Watch D2 is essential context for anyone shopping now. It is not simply the same watch with a cosmetic refresh: the D2 adds ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring, or ABPM, designed to collect readings across the day and night.
| Original Watch D | Huawei Watch D2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Blood-pressure function | Single-shot blood-pressure measurement | Single readings plus ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring in supported markets |
| ABPM schedule | Not supported | Huawei specifies 15-minute intervals in the ABPM test condition |
| Display | 1.64-inch AMOLED | 1.82-inch AMOLED |
| Body | Rectangular aluminium-alloy design with dedicated airbag strap | 48 × 38 × 13.3 mm; approximately 40 g without the strap |
| Battery claim | Up to seven days, depending on use | Typical use up to six days; up to one day with ABPM enabled |
| Availability and certification | Market- and date-dependent; do not assume global certification | Huawei says BP and ABPM features have CE certification under the EU Medical Device Regulation, with availability limited to selected European markets |
These D2 specifications come from Huawei’s current D2 specification page. Huawei’s support material also distinguishes the original D’s single-shot function from the D2’s ABPM capability.
ABPM makes the D2 more relevant if your goal is to observe changes through the day and night rather than take occasional manual readings. However, its one-day battery figure under the ABPM test condition is a significant trade-off, and the feature is not necessarily available in every country. Huawei’s D2 product page says availability varies because of national medical-device restrictions.
Do not transfer the D2’s current EU certification wording to the original Watch D. Contemporary coverage of the original described European regulatory approval in some contexts, while other reviews discussed it as not medically certified in the market or context being considered. The original was also reported as having limited availability in the United States and Australia at the time. The safe conclusion is that certification, permitted health features and retail availability must be checked for the exact model and country. It should never be described as FDA-cleared or globally medically certified without market-specific evidence. TechRadar’s original review illustrates why broad global claims are unsafe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy the Huawei Watch D?
Buy the original Huawei Watch D blood pressure smartwatch only when all of the following are true:
- Blood-pressure tracking is your dominant reason for buying a watch.
- You are willing to sit quietly, maintain the correct posture and wait up to a minute for a reading.
- You accept a large, boxy watch and a specialized airbag strap.
- You have verified that the original model and its health functions are legally available in your country.
- You will treat its readings as reference information rather than a diagnosis.
- You can obtain it from a seller who clearly identifies the model, condition, region and included strap.
It is a poor choice if you mainly want a stylish fitness watch, a rich app ecosystem, onboard music or swimming support. It is also a poor choice if you expect to measure blood pressure casually while walking around. The physical cuff mechanism is precisely what makes the Watch D interesting, but it is also what prevents it from behaving like a normal smartwatch.

Take use of sleep monitors to detect quality of your nocturnal sleep, helping you improve your sleeping habits and qualityassess the stages of your daily sleep cycle to create a more wholesome routine. Blood pressure smartwatch automatically records daily steps, distance counter, calories burned, active minutes.
- 1.95'' Full Touch Screen and Customizable Dials: This mens smart watch is equipped with a 1.95‘’ ultra-clear full-touch color screen, which can provide excellent picture quality. The smart watch blood pressure monitor comes with brightness options that makes it easy to display data even in the sun. You can also use your favorite photos such as those of your family, pets, and selfies as the desktop background of your smartwatch in the app that comes with the watch.
- Incoming Call Display and Message Notification: The BP smart watch for men women can also receive message notifications and display the content (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) All notifications are alerted by vibration. Once the smartwatch is connected to the APP, the watch can directly prompt you incoming calls. If you need to answer or hang up, you need to do it on your cell phone. So you won't miss any important calls or messages even if you keep your phone in your pocket.
- Reminder Monitoring and Share Health Data: Blood pressure monitor watch can support family data sharing, you can add families to view your health data on the APP (blood pressure, heart rate etc), so that care is always with you. Besides, when the wearer's blood pressure and heart rate data are abnormal, his family members can receive messages remotely to alert them and we can view health analysis and exception alerts in the fitness watch's app to help us monitor health.
For a current buyer who specifically wants blood-pressure trends, investigate the Huawei Watch D2 first where it is officially available. Its ABPM capability is more ambitious and its current European medical-device positioning is clearer, but it remains region-restricted and its battery life drops sharply when ABPM is active.

If the original Watch D is available at a substantial discount, in good condition and with the correct airbag strap, it can still make sense for single-shot monitoring. Verify the model, seller, condition and region before buying: older wearable inventory may be imported, refurbished or missing the strap components that make the blood-pressure function usable.
Final verdict
The Huawei Watch D is one of the more inventive health wearables because it solves a real hardware problem instead of pretending that blood pressure is just another effortless wrist estimate. The miniature cuff works best when you treat it like a measurement device: rest first, fit it carefully, support the arm, keep the watch level with the heart and remain still.
That makes the Watch D ingenious but specialized. It is worth considering for someone who genuinely values occasional blood-pressure readings and can live with the bulk. It is not the best general-purpose smartwatch, and neither the original D nor the D2 should replace a clinician’s assessment or a validated upper-arm monitor when health decisions depend on the result.
For buyers considering the original Huawei Watch D blood pressure smartwatch, the recommendation is therefore conditional: buy it for the cuff mechanism, not for fashion or broad smartwatch capability, and confirm the exact market and medical-device status before relying on any health feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Huawei Watch D diagnose high blood pressure?
No. The Watch D takes a cuff-style blood-pressure measurement, but Huawei describes it as a reference tool, not a diagnostic device. Its stated ±3 mmHg margin is a manufacturer claim, and readings can be affected by fit, posture, movement, temperature, heart rhythm and medical conditions. Use a validated upper-arm monitor and consult a clinician when medical decisions depend on the result.
Can you swim with the Huawei Watch D?
Not reliably for swimming. The original Watch D is rated IP68, which is intended for ordinary water exposure rather than swim workouts. Do not interpret IP68 as equivalent to a 5ATM swimming rating.
What is the difference between Huawei Watch D and Watch D2?
The original Watch D supports single-shot blood-pressure measurements. The Watch D2 adds ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring, with Huawei specifying 15-minute intervals in its ABPM test condition. The D2 is the more relevant model for day-and-night trends, but its ABPM battery life is listed as up to one day and availability is restricted by market.
Can I use a normal watch strap with the Huawei Watch D?
You should use the supplied compatible airbag strap and choose the correct medium or large size. The strap contains the inflatable component, so an ordinary watch band may keep the watch attached but will not preserve its blood-pressure function.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Huawei Watch D is a clever wrist-mounted cuff that can provide useful single-shot blood-pressure readings under controlled conditions. Its bulky body, dedicated strap, limited smartwatch features and market-specific status make it a niche purchase—not a replacement for clinical care or a validated upper-arm monitor.
