The biggest expected change: a Hermès stability fix
watchOS 26 beta 2 introduced a serious problem for Apple Watch Hermès devices. Some affected watches could overheat and crash, making the beta unsuitable for owners who relied on the watch. Apple’s later watchOS 26 release notes recorded that Apple Watch Hermès could crash continuously after installing beta 2, which supports the expectation that beta 3 addressed the problem.
That does not mean every Hermès model was affected, nor does the available evidence establish that every crash or temperature problem disappeared after beta 3. The careful conclusion is that beta 3 was an important compatibility and stability correction for affected Hermès users—not that it delivered a universal solution for all Apple Watch problems.
Apple did not publish evidence in the reviewed sources supporting a specific battery-life improvement, speed increase, or thermal-performance benchmark for beta 3. Battery life and performance can change between beta builds, but those changes should not be promised without testing on the relevant watch models.

Who could install watchOS 26?
Apple announced watchOS 26 compatibility for:
- Apple Watch Series 6 or later
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- All Apple Watch Ultra models
The paired iPhone also needed to be an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Compatibility is a two-device requirement: a supported watch alone is not enough if the iPhone used to manage it does not meet Apple’s requirements.
How to install the beta
Only install a developer beta if you understand that it is unfinished software and have a reliable way to recover from problems. Before beginning, back up important iPhone data and make sure you are comfortable using the watch for testing rather than depending on it as your only everyday device.
Prepare the watch and iPhone
- Update the paired iPhone to the required iOS version.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50 percent.
- Keep the Apple Watch on its charger for the entire installation.
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together while the update is being prepared and installed.
Apple’s support instructions require the watch to remain on its charger during the update. If you need one, an Apple Watch magnetic charging cable is the relevant accessory to have ready; it helps satisfy the charging requirement but does not improve the beta or fix software problems.

Update from the iPhone
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Open General > Software Update.
- Follow the prompts for the available developer beta.
- Leave the watch on its charger until the installation finishes and it restarts.
Apple also provides an update path directly on the watch through the Settings app. The precise options can vary with the installed software and beta enrollment state. Apple’s update guidance covers the charging, Wi-Fi, and installation prerequisites.
Should you install watchOS 26 beta 3?

watchOS 26 beta 3 is now a historical release. As of the research date, August 12, 2026, Apple’s developer release listing had moved on to watchOS 27 beta, released June 8, 2026, while the watchOS 26 software branch had progressed to later 26.x releases. That means beta 3 is no longer the latest watchOS 26 build and should not be used as a guide to the final feature set or current security status.
If you are deciding what to install today, check Apple’s current software-update screen and developer documentation rather than seeking out this older beta. The July 2025 release remains useful mainly as a record of Apple’s effort to stabilize the early watchOS 26 testing cycle.
