Huawei’s April 2024 announcement plan was a multi-day product campaign, not a single confirmed smartphone launch. The schedule covered wearables, audio, smart-home devices, tablets, PCs and vehicle-related technology. The Huawei P70 was only a possibility at the time; Huawei later renamed its P-series successor the Pura 70 series.
A five-day Huawei product campaign
A report published by Gizmochina on April 8, 2024 described Huawei’s plans for a series of product showcases running from April 8 through April 12. The campaign was expected to span several parts of Huawei’s hardware ecosystem rather than center on one conventional phone event.

According to the report, April 8 was focused on wearables. From April 9 to April 12, Huawei was expected to discuss or introduce products in smart-home technology, audio, automobiles, PCs, tablets and related accessories. A communication event on April 11 could also have included HarmonyOS-related announcements, although those details were not confirmed as part of a formal Huawei launch schedule.

Which products were expected?
Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration Edition
The most relevant product for wearables watchers was the reported Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration Edition. It was named as an expected addition to the Watch 4 Pro family, but the available evidence does not establish every final specification, regional release or price.
The naming suggested a special-edition version of Huawei’s premium smartwatch rather than an entirely new watch platform. Buyers should distinguish between a special-edition product reported in advance and a globally available retail model; Huawei’s watch catalog and features can vary by market.
Huawei FreeLace Pro 2
The campaign was also expected to include the FreeLace Pro 2, a neckband-style wireless audio product. It was listed among the anticipated devices, while later Huawei support material references the product within the company’s audio ecosystem.
It may appeal to users who prefer a band connecting the earbuds over true wireless models. However, compatibility and features depend on the connected phone, operating-system version and region. Huawei’s support documentation, for example, notes that some audio-sharing features require EMUI 13.0 or later and work only with selected devices: Huawei’s compatibility guidance.

MatePad and Starlight accessories
A new MatePad tablet and Starlight keyboard and mouse accessories were also mentioned. These products fit Huawei’s broader attempt to connect tablets, computers, phones and accessories through a common software and hardware experience.
For buyers outside Huawei’s strongest markets, the important questions are practical: which apps are available, whether the required services work locally, and whether the tablet integrates with the user’s existing phone and computer. A product announced in China should not automatically be assumed to have identical global availability.
Smart Screen S5 and Intelligent World S7 vehicles
The reported smart-home lineup included the Huawei Smart Screen S5. Huawei was also expected to present new versions of vehicles associated with the Intelligent World S7 name.
The automotive references should be treated carefully. The evidence supports vehicle-related announcements and S7 models, but it does not justify calling these Huawei-built cars or describing Huawei as the sole vehicle manufacturer. “Automotive technology” and “vehicle-related products” are safer and more accurate descriptions unless an official source specifies Huawei’s precise commercial role.

What was actually announced that week?
Contemporaneous follow-up coverage reported that Huawei had introduced the MateBook X Pro 2024 and FreeBuds Lipstick 2 by April 11. That coverage also said the P70 had not been unveiled at that event.
Huawei’s wearable activity extended beyond the products named in the original preview. A separate report said the company launched the Huawei Band 9 in China at 269 yuan, with sales scheduled to begin on April 12. That price and sales date were China-specific; they do not establish pricing or availability in other countries.
These developments reinforce the campaign’s character: Huawei was rolling out products across several categories and days, rather than using one event to reveal every expected device at once.

At the time of the April 8 report, Huawei had not provided a firm public launch date for the handset widely expected to be called the P70. The company had reportedly suggested that the phone could arrive “at any time,” but that language was not a confirmed event date.

That left the P70 in a different evidence category from the scheduled product showcases:
- Reported as scheduled: the multi-day categories and showcase period.
- Named as expected products: the Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration Edition, FreeLace Pro 2, MatePad, Smart Screen S5 and Intelligent World S7-related products.
- Possible or rumored: the P70 and some HarmonyOS-related announcements.
Leaks and industry speculation created strong expectations because Huawei’s P-series had become associated with camera-focused flagship phones. But expectation was not confirmation, and the April 11 follow-up indicated that the phone was not part of that particular announcement.

The “P70 release date mystery” is no longer the right way to describe the story in a current article. Huawei later announced that it was renaming the P Series as the Pura Series. Huawei’s support documentation identifies the Pura 70 family as the successor branding and says existing products such as the P50 and P60 retain their original names: Huawei’s explanation of the Pura naming.

Huawei’s current global product pages list the Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro, alongside the Pura 70 Ultra. In other words, the anticipated P70 was not shown by the available evidence to have been canceled. The more accurate interpretation is that Huawei transitioned the expected successor into a new branded family.

The exact original Pura 70 launch timing should not be inferred from the April 8 preview alone. The important historical distinction is that the date was uncertain as of April 8, 2024; it is not accurate today to present the P70 as an indefinitely unreleased phone.
What the product mix says about Huawei
The campaign’s breadth illustrates an all-scenario ecosystem approach: watches and health devices at the personal level, earbuds for audio, tablets and PCs for productivity, smart displays for the home, and automotive technology beyond the traditional consumer-device categories.
That is an interpretation of the product mix rather than a direct corporate statement about this specific campaign. Huawei’s official event pages have repeatedly grouped watches, tablets, earbuds and other connected products together, while its HarmonyOS announcements emphasize cross-device interaction. The hardware strategy is therefore easier to understand as an ecosystem than as a sequence of unrelated launches.

What buyers should check before purchasing
The April campaign was primarily a news event, but it also matters to prospective buyers. Before choosing a Huawei watch, phone or accessory, check:
- Market availability: China, Europe and other regions may receive different products, configurations and release dates.
- Phone compatibility: health, notification, audio-sharing and cross-device features may depend on the phone model and EMUI or other software version.
- Services and apps: MatePad and Huawei phone buyers should confirm that the apps and services they rely on are supported in their country.
- Warranty and returns: imported devices may lack local warranty coverage or use different cellular bands and chargers.
- Automotive access: vehicle-related technology is especially market-dependent and should not be assumed to be available through ordinary Huawei retail channels.
Huawei’s official discovery pages for wearables, tablets and laptops are better starting points than assuming that a product mentioned in a China-focused report is sold globally.
Verdict
Huawei really did plan a broad, five-day product blitz in April 2024, with wearables leading the schedule and additional attention on audio, home devices, tablets, PCs and automotive technology. Several products were later reported as announced, including the MateBook X Pro 2024, FreeBuds Lipstick 2 and China’s Band 9 launch.
But the P70 was not a confirmed part of the April 8 schedule, and it was not announced at the April 11 event described in contemporaneous coverage. The later Pura 70 branding resolved the biggest part of the mystery: Huawei’s expected P-series successor continued under a new name. Availability, pricing and compatibility still require market-by-market checking.
