Hublot’s Big Bang Sang Bleu II arrived in three variants in January 2022: black ceramic, forest-green ceramic and Magic Gold. All share a 45 mm case, a faceted tattoo-inspired design and an automatic flyback chronograph. The green ceramic and Magic Gold versions were the two variants the Time+Tide writer specifically handled and photographed; the black ceramic version is included here based on the article’s reported specifications, not a first-hand wearing impression.
What distinguishes the three variants?
The Sang Bleu II was developed with Swiss tattoo artist Maxime Plescia-Buchi. Its geometric, star-like facets extend from the bezel across the dial, with alternating satin and polished surfaces. The cases have sloped lugs that curve around the wrist. The result is a watch whose visual identity is much less conventional than its chronograph layout.

These are historical launch prices and allocations, not current prices or confirmation of present availability. Time+Tide’s detailed allocations add up to 550 watches, while an earlier overview from the same publication says 450 pieces across the three models. The reports conflict, and the discrepancy is unresolved.
How large is the watch, and what are its specifications?
Time+Tide’s January 2022 launch specifications list a 45 mm case diameter, 16.5 mm thickness and 100 m water resistance for the trio. The faceted sapphire crystal and the sculpted bezel contribute to the watch’s substantial, angular appearance. Its sloped lugs are intended to follow the curve of the wrist, though the shared 45 mm diameter and 16.5 mm thickness are important fit considerations for anyone who prefers smaller or slimmer watches.
How do you read the geometric dial?
The hands are rendered as luminous triangles: the shorter, smaller triangle indicates hours, while the longer, larger triangle indicates minutes. At 9 o’clock, the chronograph register tracks elapsed minutes up to 60. The 3 o’clock display shows running seconds and is not luminous.
The design’s layered geometry can slow a quick glance at the time. In the Time+Tide writer’s comparison, the green ceramic dial was easier to read than the Magic Gold version’s gold-on-black treatment. The dial’s priority is expressive form rather than immediate legibility; as the writer put it, “It is an artistic trade-off.”

What movement powers the Big Bang Sang Bleu II?
Time+Tide identifies the calibre as Hublot HUB1240.MXM, an automatic flyback chronograph with a column wheel. Its reported power reserve is 72 hours, and its frequency is 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). A flyback chronograph can be reset and restarted in one action without first stopping the chronograph, which is useful when timing successive events.
What are the materials like?
Time+Tide describes the ceramic and Magic Gold cases as highly scratch-resistant. The article attributes a hardness figure of 1,000 Vickers to Magic Gold and says this is 500 Vickers below the ceramic comparison. Those figures are claims reported by the publication, not independent laboratory measurements established here. Magic Gold’s muted, sandy appearance also differs visually from the more saturated green ceramic and its black accents.

Which version makes the most sense?
- Choose black ceramic if you want the most restrained colorway among the three. The source provides fewer hands-on observations for this variant, so there is no basis here for a direct wear comparison with the other two.
- Choose green ceramic if you want a distinctive color and, in the writer’s direct comparison, the more legible of the green and Magic Gold dials.
- Choose Magic Gold if its subdued gold tone and black contrast are the central appeal. Its gold-on-black display proved less immediate to read for the hands-on writer.
Time+Tide reported the watches for inquiries at launch in 2022, but current official availability, stock and market pricing are not established by that report. Its hands-on coverage is a secondary publication’s account, rather than an official Hublot technical specification sheet.
