What the 40th-anniversary edition celebrates
Hublot announced the watch for its 40th anniversary in 2020 as a return to the 1980 Classic Original. The original paired a gold case with a rubber strap, a combination Hublot says broke with conventional watchmaking codes. For the anniversary, the brand revisited that design in three case materials rather than treating the release as a single commemorative model. Hublot’s anniversary announcement describes the edition as a reinterpretation of the Classic Original.
The anniversary model keeps the design restrained: Europa Star describes a black lacquered dial with faceted hands and Hublot appliques. Its coverage characterizes the 2020 watch as a mechanical version of the anniversary reinterpretation. Europa Star’s model listing focuses on a yellow-gold example.
Three materials, different reported limits and launch prices
Hodinkee’s 2020 coverage reports the following variants, production limits and launch-era prices. References below are transcribed from Hodinkee; the strings should be checked against the specific watch because other listings use different reference formats.

The production counts and dollar prices are figures reported in Hodinkee’s 2020 launch coverage, not a current inventory count or valuation. Europa Star lists the gold watch under a different reference, 511.VX.1280.RX.MDM40, and reports a historical price of CHF 23,900. Its page does not establish a present-day asking price. Europa Star’s listing is market- and source-specific, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Reported dimensions and movement
Hodinkee reports a 45 mm case, 10.95 mm thickness, 100 m water resistance and an automatic HUB111 movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Europa Star’s listing for the gold example gives caliber HUB1112, a 4 Hz frequency and 42 hours of reserve; it also lists hours, minutes, seconds and date functions. These caliber designations differ between the two publications, so they are presented as source-specific rather than silently reconciled.

Europa Star identifies the gold example as reference 511.VX.1280.RX.MDM40, whereas Hodinkee gives 11.VX.1280.RX.MDM40 for gold. Because the specialist reports do not agree on every reference and caliber string, verify the exact reference and movement against documentation for an individual watch before relying on a listing.
