The Humism Rhizome is an automatic watch whose moving metal discs form both a kinetic-art display and its time indication. A solid circle marks the hour and a hollow circle marks the minutes. Humism lists 39mm and 42mm versions, with collection-page prices of US$368 and US$388 respectively as of October 8, 2026. Whether it suits you depends most on your preferred case size, tolerance for a less conventional dial, and the final terms shown for your destination at checkout.

How the Rhizome dial shows the time

Overlapping sculpted discs shift against a white base dial to create a changing pattern. They are not a separate animation layered over a conventional display: the indicators are part of the moving design. Humism’s FAQ says the solid circle indicates the hour and the hollow circle indicates the minutes; it also says the motion shown in its videos and GIFs is real-time.

That layout may take a moment to learn if you expect hands or a digital readout. In Monochrome Watches’ June 14, 2021 hands-on review, Erik Slaven said that reading the time remained “surprisingly quick and easy” despite the moving sculpture. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every wearer will find the display equally intuitive.

What you get: movement and construction

Humism specifies a Seiko (SII) NH35A automatic movement. Its FAQ lists 24 jewels, hacking seconds, hand-winding and a customized rotor. Monochrome’s 2021 review gives a 41-hour power reserve, 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and regulation of ±15 seconds per day; treat those as review-era specifications, not freshly verified manufacturer figures.

  • Case: 316L stainless steel.
  • Crystals: sapphire front crystal with anti-reflective coating and a sapphire exhibition back, according to Humism’s current product page.
  • Water resistance: 5 ATM, as listed by Humism. This is a rating, not a promise that the watch is suitable for every water activity.
  • Strap: Italian full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather with quick-release fittings. The FAQ and independent review specify a 20mm width; check the selected variant and fit before buying an alternate strap.

The combination makes the Rhizome a mechanical watch with a distinctive dial rather than a conventional tool watch. Its 5 ATM rating and leather strap are worth considering if you want a watch primarily for water-heavy use.

Choosing between the 39mm and 42mm Rhizome

Humism lists two case diameters. The larger size has a published lug-to-lug span, while the smaller size has a stated wrist-fit range. These figures come from different Humism pages, so they do not provide a complete side-by-side fit specification.

Version Diameter Other published fit details Collection price (Oct. 8, 2026)
Rhizome 39mm 39mm Humism lists a 5.5–8 inch wrist-fit range. The product page gives both 11.4mm and 11.9mm thickness figures in different blocks. US$368
Rhizome 42mm 42mm Humism’s FAQ lists 11.9mm thickness and 48.5mm lug-to-lug. US$388

The 39mm page’s two thickness figures conflict, so do not assume either one is definitive without confirming with Humism. For fit, compare a watch you already wear by diameter and lug-to-lug length; the FAQ’s 48.5mm figure for the 42mm is especially useful for judging how far the case may span across your wrist. The 39mm’s stated wrist range is guidance, not a fit guarantee.

Price, availability and purchase terms

Humism’s collection page displayed US$368 for the 39mm and US$388 for the 42mm when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those are listed prices, not confirmation that a particular size is in stock or the final delivered cost. The product detail page also contains leftover preorder and sold-out wording with outdated delivery estimates. Check the selected size and current terms at checkout rather than relying on those estimates.

Humism lists 15-day returns and an 18-month global warranty on the 39mm listing. Its Kickstarter FAQ, last updated October 2023, says the warranty covers manufacturing defects; it also says buyers may have to pay shipping and parts for post-warranty or user-caused repairs. The same FAQ says possible duties and taxes are not covered by Humism. Those charges depend on destination and current customs rules, so confirm the amount and return conditions applicable to your order before paying.

Is the Humism Rhizome worth considering?

The Rhizome is best understood as a design-led automatic: its main point of difference is a moving dial that still communicates hours and minutes, rather than a conventional set of hands. It may appeal if you want a mechanical watch that doubles as kinetic art and are willing to learn its indicator system. If immediate, familiar legibility or a complete fit specification is your priority, inspect the dial and case measurements closely before choosing a size.

Monochrome’s 2021 hands-on review praised the animated metal-disc display and reported that it was quick to read, but its then-listed US$318 price and other purchase terms are historical, not current. Use Humism’s live collection listing for current displayed pricing and the checkout page for size availability, delivery, taxes and return details.
