HYT’s challenge was not simply to make an unconventional watch: it had to make a sealed fluid display work reliably and explain why that display belonged in a luxury timepiece. In a 2024 Time+Tide feature, the brand’s T1 was presented as a clearer product proposition; the article’s body calls Vincent Perriard HYT’s new chairman, although its headline calls him CEO.
What the Time+Tide feature says—and what it does not
Time+Tide published its feature on April 26, 2024, framing the question as what had gone wrong at HYT and how Perriard planned to address the brand’s challenges. The written page provides editorial context and T1 specifications, while the discussion with Andrew McUtchen is embedded as a video. It does not publish a transcript, so the video’s answers should not be inferred from the article text. Read the Time+Tide feature.
The article characterizes HYT’s earlier range as unusually broad, from the high five figures into the hundreds of thousands, and presents the T1 as a way to make the offer easier to distinguish. That is Time+Tide’s assessment of the range and product direction, not audited company data or evidence of sales performance.
Why HYT’s fluid display is both its signature and its challenge
HYT describes its display as two fluids—one colored and one transparent—moving through a capillary connected to flexible reservoirs, or bellows. A mechanical movement drives the system. The boundary between the fluids, called the meniscus, indicates the hour; at 06:00, the colored fluid retreats to its starting point in a reset HYT calls a “rewind.” This is HYT’s account of its technology. HYT’s official About page outlines the brand and its fluidic approach.

Making time visible as motion gives HYT a distinctive identity, but it also adds work for the maker and the buyer. The company must manage a sealed fluid system with precision, while explaining an unfamiliar display to someone accustomed to conventional hands or numerals. That communication challenge follows from the mechanism; it is not a measured finding about consumer preferences.
The technical problems Perriard described
In a March 10, 2017 interview with The 1916 Company, Perriard, then HYT’s CEO, described the development challenge this way: “We faced a few complications and difficulties when creating the first prototype. Indeed, the fluid module technology is completely new in the watchmaking industry, therefore we had to start from scratch.” Read the 2017 interview.

He said the liquids had to meet watchmaking requirements for color and homogeneous texture while resisting vibration, shock and temperature changes. He also cited long-term stability and water resistance, and explained that the system’s exact fluid volume matters: a special setting system was needed to keep the meniscus from moving too quickly. These are Perriard’s account of the development demands, not independent test results.
Perriard said in that same interview that HYT had registered seven technology patents and one design patent at the time. That figure describes his account of the portfolio in 2017, not the company’s current patent count. He also attributed the bellows’ inspiration to NASA sensors; this is his explanation, rather than independently verified engineering history.

How the product direction evolved
HYT’s official timeline records the H1’s 2012 debut as a meeting of fine watchmaking and fluid mechanics. It then lists successive lines and concepts including H2, H3, H4, Skull, H0, H5, Hastroid, Moon Runner, Conical Tourbillon and, in 2024, the T1 Series. The current About page lists S1, T1, Conical Tourbillon, Moon Runner and Hastroid collections. The chronology demonstrates product development; it does not establish commercial success or customer acceptance. See HYT’s official timeline and collections.
In its April 2024 account, Time+Tide described the T1 as the first model to hide the mechanism powering its fluidic hours, offering a clearer distinction in the range while remaining avant-garde. The feature pointed to the Conical Tourbillon Infinity Sapphires as an example of HYT’s more elaborate direction. This is the publication’s characterization of strategy at that time, not a current positioning statement from the company.

What can be established about HYT today
HYT’s official website continues to present collections and routes for store locations and customer service. Its terms identify Kairos Technology Switzerland (KTS) SA as trading as HYT Watches, and the official contact page lists that company. These pages establish an official web and contact presence, but they do not establish the current CEO, current model stock or prices, sales performance, or operational status in every retail market. HYT terms and conditions · HYT contact page.
No sales, production, market-size or consumer-preference figures are established by these sources. The brand’s challenge is therefore best understood through the documented product and engineering questions: making a novel fluidic mechanism function to watchmaking requirements, and presenting a broad, unconventional range in terms collectors can readily distinguish.
