I tested Gemini on the Galaxy Watch 8—and it’s almost the smartwatch assistant I wanted

Gemini makes the Galaxy Watch 8 much smarter than older Wear OS watches, especially for conversational questions and multi-step tasks—but it still needs a connection and can confidently get facts wrong.

Gemini is a substantial improvement over Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 8. Ask it a vague question, follow up naturally, check your calendar, search for local information, or combine a search with an action, and the watch feels considerably smarter than older Wear OS models.

But “almost” matters. Gemini still depends heavily on a phone or internet connection, is awkward for long answers on a tiny display, lacks a consistently useful handoff to your phone, and can confidently return incorrect information. In 2026, the Galaxy Watch 8 is also no longer Samsung’s newest mainstream smartwatch: Google’s current Galaxy Unpacked coverage refers to the newer Galaxy Watch 9.

The short verdict

Gemini is the most persuasive software improvement the Galaxy Watch 8 has over previous Wear OS watches. Compared with Google Assistant, it is better at understanding conversational requests, answering open-ended questions, using context from Google services, and completing multi-step tasks.

That does not make it a dependable on-device intelligence layer. Gemini is better understood as a faster, more flexible, cloud-connected assistant. It can reduce the friction between asking a question and getting something done, but it cannot remove the need to check important answers.

My verdict is simple: Gemini makes the Galaxy Watch 8 feel considerably smarter, but it is not close to excellent in every respect. It is a strong reason to prefer a modern Wear OS watch over an older Assistant-only model, but not a sufficient reason by itself to pay near-current-generation pricing for an older Watch 8.

What Gemini does better than Google Assistant

The difference is most noticeable when a request requires interpretation rather than a single command. Independent hands-on testing by Android Central and Android Authority found Gemini more capable with natural-language questions, Google Search, Calendar, Maps, and combined actions.

Task Gemini on Wear OS Google Assistant on older Wear OS watches
Open-ended question More likely to provide a useful, search-informed answer More likely to fail or return a limited response
Conversational follow-up Better at interpreting loosely phrased context More rigid and command-oriented
Calendar-aware request Can use relevant calendar context in a request More likely to misunderstand the intended task
Multi-step action Can combine search and actions in one request Often requires separate commands
Basic timer or weather request Useful, but the advantage may be small Still broadly adequate

Examples reported in testing included asking about air quality and whether outdoor exercise was advisable, retrieving details about a scheduled movie from Calendar, asking for local restaurants, and posing general-interest questions such as a short history of carrier pigeons.

The most convincing demonstrations combined information with an action: Gemini could find movie-related information, create a Calendar event, and send an invitation. That is materially more useful than asking a watch to answer isolated trivia.

The best use cases on your wrist

Gemini makes the most sense when your phone is inconvenient to reach and the answer can be short.

  • Schedule checks: Ask what is next on your calendar or retrieve details about an existing event.
  • Local information: Ask about nearby restaurants, places, weather, or air quality.
  • Quick research: Get a concise explanation while walking, cooking, commuting, or exercising.
  • Notes and lists: Add an idea to Google Keep where that integration is available on your exact setup.
  • Music: Request playback or a playlist through supported services such as YouTube Music.
  • Smart-home control: Use supported Google Home actions without navigating several watch screens.
  • Combined tasks: Ask a question and follow it with a reminder or calendar action.

Useful prompts sound like ordinary speech: “What time is my movie, and remind me 30 minutes before it starts?” or “What is the air quality near me, and should I run outside?” Gemini’s advantage is not that it makes every command new; it is that it handles intent and context more naturally.

Why the small screen still matters

The Galaxy Watch 8 is a good surface for concise answers. Voice input avoids typing on a tiny keyboard, the interface feels responsive, and Samsung rates the Watch 8 family’s display at up to 3,000 nits, which helps with outdoor readability.

Long answers are another story. Follow-up responses can replace the previous answer rather than creating a comfortable, scrollable conversation. Watch conversations do not necessarily appear in Gemini’s recent-chat history, and there is no consistently useful “view on phone” handoff. Links, restaurant menus, map results, and long explanations are therefore less convenient than they would be on the phone.

The Watch 8 Classic’s rotating bezel makes scrolling through text more pleasant, but it does not solve the fundamental problem: a watch is a glanceable interface, not a miniature phone.

The biggest problem: confident mistakes

Gemini’s fluent answers can create a false sense of reliability. In Android Authority’s testing, a movie-showtime request produced plausible-looking but incorrect results, including information for the wrong day and apparently fabricated IMAX listings.

That failure is more important than a slightly awkward answer. A watch encourages quick action without opening a browser or checking a source, so an incorrect time or local listing can easily become an incorrect plan.

Use Gemini to reduce friction, not to remove verification. Check its response against an authoritative source before relying on medical or health information, travel times, reservations, event times, directions, local-business details, financial information, or consequential messages and calendar entries. Health answers should be treated as general information, not medical advice.

Does Gemini need your phone?

Yes, connectivity is a critical limitation. Engadget’s Galaxy Watch 8 review found that the experience required a compatible phone nearby. Android Authority also reported that Gemini needed a connection for tasks that seem simple enough to perform locally, including timers, stopwatches, and reminders.

A Bluetooth or Wi-Fi model may depend on its paired phone or an available network. An LTE model can reduce phone dependence when it has mobile data, but that does not turn Gemini into an offline assistant. Do not assume that LTE enables full offline Gemini functionality.

Availability can also vary by watch model, Wear OS version, country, language, account, and rollout status. The Galaxy Watch 8 launched with Wear OS 6 and Samsung One UI 8 Watch, but other Wear OS watches do not necessarily provide the same Gemini experience.

What the Watch 8 hardware contributes

Gemini is not performing generative AI locally on the Exynos W1000. The hardware helps the experience indirectly by making the watch interface and apps feel quick, while the actual assistant experience remains connected.

Model Display Weight Battery Platform
Galaxy Watch 8, 40mm 34.0mm, 438×438 30g 325mAh Exynos W1000, Wear OS 6
Galaxy Watch 8, 44mm 37.3mm, 480×480 34g 435mAh Exynos W1000, Wear OS 6
Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, 46mm 34.0mm, 438×438 63.5g 445mAh Exynos W1000, Wear OS 6

Samsung describes the standard Watch 8 as its thinnest design at launch. The regular 40mm and 44mm models are considerably lighter than the Classic, making them more appealing for sleep tracking, running, and all-day wear. The Classic is the better choice if you specifically want its traditional styling and rotating bezel, and can accept the 63.5g weight.

How to set it up and test it properly

Menus and labels can change with software builds, and eligibility varies. The following is a practical setup path rather than a guarantee that every watch will show identical controls.

  1. Update the watch, paired phone, Google apps, Gemini, and Galaxy Wearable software.
  2. On the watch, open the Play Store and check for Gemini or the relevant Google assistant update if it is not already installed. The rollout path for eligible Wear OS watches has been reported by Tom’s Guide.
  3. Confirm that the watch is paired with the intended Android phone and that the phone has internet access.
  4. Sign in to the intended Google account in the relevant apps.
  5. Try a short command such as the weather or a timer.
  6. Test a Calendar or Search workflow, then check on the phone where the event, reminder, note, or invitation was saved.

If Gemini fails, confirm the pairing and phone connection first. Then check the Google account, update both devices and relevant apps, retry with a short command, and use the phone directly for anything urgent or complex. This is a sensible recovery workflow based on the reported connection limitations, not a universal official troubleshooting sequence.

Watch 8 versus Watch 8 Classic versus Watch 9

The standard Watch 8 is the sensible Gemini test bed for most people. It is lighter, thinner in feel, and available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. The Classic costs more at launch and weighs much more, but its rotating bezel is genuinely useful when reading or navigating watch content.

In the US, Engadget reported launch prices of $350 for the 40mm Watch 8, $380 for the 44mm model, and $500 for the 46mm Classic. Current inventory and discounts can differ, so check Samsung’s official Watch 8 page rather than using those launch prices as a current quote.

For a new purchase in 2026, compare any discounted Watch 8 directly with the newer Galaxy Watch 9. Google identifies the Watch 9 in its July 22, 2026 announcement as the newer Samsung watch associated with current Gemini integrations. Exact Watch 9 specifications and pricing should be checked on the current official product page. If the price gap is modest, the Watch 9 is the more defensible choice for current hardware, support longevity, and the latest Google-Samsung integration.

Who should buy—or keep—the Watch 8?

Buy the Galaxy Watch 8 when:

  • You already use a Samsung Galaxy phone.
  • You want Wear OS with a more capable voice assistant.
  • You regularly ask contextual questions, not just timers and alarms.
  • You value Calendar, Search, Maps, Keep, music, and smart-home integration.
  • You can tolerate cloud dependence and occasional incorrect answers.
  • You find it at a substantial discount against the Watch 9.

Choose the Watch 8 Classic when:

  • You specifically want the rotating bezel and traditional design.
  • You prefer easier physical navigation through text.
  • You accept the added weight, especially for sleep or exercise use.

Keep your existing Wear OS watch when:

  • Your needs are mainly workouts, notifications, timers, alarms, music controls, and basic commands.
  • Assistant already does everything you ask.
  • You do not want your assistant to depend on a connected phone.
  • Gemini has not reached your device or region.

Choose another ecosystem when:

  • You use an iPhone.
  • You need highly reliable fitness or navigation features above conversational assistance.
  • You want a mature offline assistant.
  • You dislike voice input or frequently need to type.

Also remember that Gemini on Wear OS is not a watch-only purchase. The experience described by reviewers depends on a compatible Android phone and connectivity. A separate Gemini subscription should not be treated as mandatory for standard watch functions unless Google’s current documentation says otherwise.

Final verdict

Gemini finally gives the Galaxy Watch the ability to understand intent rather than merely recognize commands. That makes natural questions, schedule checks, local searches, and multi-step actions substantially more practical than they were with Google Assistant.

It still needs a connection, still struggles with the watch’s limited interface, still lacks a reliable phone handoff, and can confidently get facts wrong. Buy the Galaxy Watch 8 for its broader Wear OS experience and treat Gemini as a major bonus—not as the sole reason to pay full price for an older-generation watch.
