The 2021 Ianos Mihanikos is a Greek-inspired, 300 m-rated automatic with a striking air-pump small-seconds display and a deliberate omission: it has no minute markers on the bezel. That choice gives the watch a strong identity, but it also compromises elapsed-minute timing—one reason Fratello reviewer Dave Sergeant said it did not qualify as a true diver’s watch in his assessment. Its 43 mm case and 15.75 mm height make it substantial on paper, too.
What is the Ianos Mihanikos?
The Mihanikos was Ianos’s second diver, following the Avyssos. Ianos says it draws on the industrialization of sponge diving in the Greek islands, when diving suits and pumps became part of the work. According to the maker, Kalymnians called the suit and pump “Mihani,” or engine, and the person operating it the “Mihanikos,” or mechanic. That is the brand’s design narrative, rather than an independently verified account of every historical detail.
The watch translates that story into several visible features: a broad, minimally marked bezel intended to evoke a diver’s helmet window, a small-seconds display inspired by an air pump, and a strap channel integrated into the case. Ianos explains the missing minute markers this way: “The minute markers have been removed as the diving times now spanned hours, not minutes on the dark bottom of the ocean.”
What are the Mihanikos’s specifications?
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Case | 316L stainless steel; 43 mm diameter, 50.84 mm lug-to-lug, and 15.75 mm total height |
| Crystal | Domed sapphire with anti-reflective coating |
| Movement | Swiss-made Sellita SW360-1 automatic, 31 jewels, date, and approximately 42-hour power reserve |
| Water resistance | 300 m / 30 ATM, according to Ianos and independent reviews; the cited coverage does not establish ISO 6425 certification |
| Dial | Dark blue, with luminous sponge-like hour markers, date at 12, and small seconds at 6 |
| Strap | 20 mm channel/width; launch coverage described a patterned rubber single-pass or NATO-style strap, and some coverage also lists leather |
The broad case measurements point to a sizeable watch, but dimensions alone cannot predict fit on an individual wrist. Dave Sergeant’s Fratello review praised the build quality and highlighted the small-seconds detail, while noting the thickness and a white date wheel that stands out against the blue dial. He wrote: “The going seconds sub-dial at six o’clock is one of my favorite elements.”

Is the Mihanikos a real dive watch?
It is rated to 300 m / 30 ATM, but water resistance and dive-timing usability are different questions. The bezel’s lack of minute markers means it does not offer the conventional clear elapsed-minute scale a diver uses to track time underwater. Sergeant’s conclusion was: “I get the reason for this, but in doing so, the watch no longer qualifies as a true divers’ watch.” That is his assessment of the design’s functionality, not a challenge to the stated water-resistance rating.
The practical tradeoff is straightforward: the Mihanikos gives priority to its helmet-window aesthetic and historical concept over conventional elapsed-minute legibility. The cited coverage does not establish ISO 6425 certification, so the 300 m rating alone should not be treated as proof of that certification.

How does it wear, and what about replacement straps?
At 43 mm across, 50.84 mm lug-to-lug, and 15.75 mm tall, the Mihanikos is substantial by its published dimensions. Those figures are useful for comparison with a watch already known to fit you; they do not establish how it will feel on your wrist. Sergeant specifically listed the overall thickness among his reservations.
The strap is listed at 20 mm, but width is not the only fit constraint. Fratello reports fixed spring bars, and the strap passes through a channel integrated into the case. A replacement therefore needs to suit that arrangement; an ordinary two-piece strap should not be assumed to fit simply because it is 20 mm wide. The launch setup was described as a patterned rubber single-pass/NATO-style strap, with some coverage also listing leather.

Who is the Ianos Mihanikos for?
The Mihanikos makes the most sense for someone drawn to its Kalymnos-inspired design, unusual seconds display, and distinctive case-and-strap construction. Its conventional automatic movement and stated 300 m rating may also appeal to a buyer looking for a robustly rated watch, provided they distinguish that rating from a conventional diver’s minute-timing layout.
For a decision against another dive-style watch, compare case dimensions and thickness, movement and service support, elapsed-minute legibility, documented water-resistance certification, strap attachment, and current commercial terms. The Mihanikos’s published measurements and design choices answer several of those questions; the cited launch coverage does not establish its current price, warranty, or availability.
