Iconic runway shows are remembered not just for beautiful clothes but for what they changed: a new silhouette, a presentation that made the stage part of the story, or a collection that engaged with its historical moment. Dior’s 1947 New Look and Alexander McQueen’s politically charged, theatrical shows offer two distinct ways a runway can become a reference point in fashion history.
What makes a runway show iconic?
There is no definitive ranking of the most memorable fashion shows. A useful way to understand them is to look at what changed in the clothes, how the presentation shaped their meaning, and what the collection said about its time. The Vitra Design Museum describes the fashion show as a medium that brings together set design, clothing, performance, light, and sound—and as a reflection of fashion’s changing role in society. Its Catwalk exhibition therefore offers a broader lens than treating a show as a procession of outfits alone.

- Silhouette and construction: Did the collection propose a visibly different way to shape or make clothes?
- Staging and performance: Did the setting or action contribute to the collection’s meaning?
- Historical or cultural context: Did the clothes engage with a political, social, or historical idea?
- Fashion’s audience and role: Did the presentation suggest a change in how fashion could be understood or experienced?
Dior’s 1947 New Look reset the postwar silhouette
On 12 February 1947, Christian Dior launched his couture house with a collection whose sloping shoulders, full bust, cinched waist, and long, full skirts sharply contrasted with wartime dress. The silhouette became known as the New Look. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s account of the New Look in fashion history explains both its striking proportions and the reaction they provoked: in rationed Britain, the amount of fabric required was controversial, even as the silhouette later became widely popular.
The New Look’s significance is legible in the clothes themselves. Its defined waist and expansive skirt proposed a dramatic alternative to wartime austerity. It also shows why a landmark collection can be remembered through more than its immediate reception: the new shape became a lasting reference in discussions of postwar fashion. That break was especially visible against the couture world that preceded the war. In a 2024 article, the V&A notes that Paris had 70 registered couture houses in 1939—a measure of the prewar couture landscape, not a count of runway shows or their audiences. The museum’s account of couture during the Second World War also quotes Lucien Lelong, then president of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, insisting of wartime relocation plans: “It is in Paris or it is nowhere”.

Alexander McQueen made the runway carry an argument
McQueen’s shows are useful examples of fashion presented as cultural expression rather than decoration alone. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Savage Beauty exhibition account describes his work as engaging with culture, politics, and identity. The exhibition traced his career from his 1992 Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection through his final runway presentation, which followed his death in February 2010. It highlights designs including the bumster trouser, kimono jacket, and three-point origami frockcoat.
McQueen once said, “Everything I do is based on tailoring.” The Met places that remark in the context of his Savile Row training and his combination of tailoring and patternmaking with draping and dressmaking. That combination helps explain how a collection could be formally exacting while also using the runway to express a broader idea.

Highland Rape and the challenge to romantic history
For autumn/winter 1995–96, McQueen titled a collection Highland Rape. The Met connects it to the Jacobite Risings and the Highland Clearances, and describes it as a challenge to romantic images of Scotland. His later Widows of Culloden collection, for autumn/winter 2006–07, also drew on Scottish history. Those references make the shows examples of fashion using historical material to question how a past is represented, rather than simply borrowing its visual motifs. These interpretations follow the Met’s collection descriptions; they are not a claim that every viewer reads the work identically. The Met’s exhibition account discusses both collections.

VOSS turned spectacle toward ideals of beauty
McQueen’s spring/summer 2001 show VOSS drew on a photograph by Joel-Peter Witkin. The Met identifies Michelle Olley as playing the figure in that inspiration and describes the show as challenging conventional ideals of beauty. Here, staging and reference were part of the collection’s meaning: the presentation asked viewers to confront the standards by which bodies are judged, rather than simply admire a series of garments. The Met’s account of VOSS provides the basis for that reading.

How these shows changed what a runway could mean
Dior and McQueen are not interchangeable milestones. Dior’s New Look is remembered chiefly for proposing a new postwar silhouette, while McQueen’s work demonstrates how historical reference, construction, and theatrical presentation could make a collection carry cultural or political meaning. Together, they show why runway shows fashion history remembers are not necessarily important for the same reason.

These examples do not establish a single, comprehensive list of the greatest runway shows, nor do they quantify audience size or commercial impact. They do make the case for judging a memorable show by more than spectacle: the strongest reference points connect what appeared on the runway to a change in form, a deliberate act of presentation, or a larger historical conversation.
