Keep the watch and any box, papers, receipts, service records, or family notes together. Before arranging repairs, an appraisal, or a sale, photograph the watch and its documents and write down what you know about its history. The story alone cannot establish the watch’s identity or value.
Secure the watch and record what you know
Store the watch with its related paperwork so that details do not get separated. Photograph the watch from several angles, along with any markings and documents. Note who owned it, what you were told about it, and when you received it. Keep observations distinct from assumptions: a family recollection may be useful context, but it does not confirm a model, authenticity, condition, or value.

For interim storage, use an individual padded case or watch roll to reduce scratches and impacts. If the watch has stopped, do not force it to run or wind it; ask a qualified watchmaker about this particular piece before anyone attempts work. Find out what the watch is before deciding what it is worth
Gather the photographs, markings, papers, and ownership history for a watch specialist to review. Ask what can be identified from the available evidence and what would require an in-person examination. Do not treat a quick price opinion or an identification guess as a formal appraisal.

Museums may not provide valuations for private owners. The Royal Ontario Museum’s policy says that it does not offer financial appraisals or evaluations to the general public and suggests contacting suitable dealers, auctioneers, or appraisers instead.
Choose an appraisal that fits your purpose
First decide what question you need the report to answer: personal curiosity, insurance, estate documentation, a legal or tax matter, or a possible sale. These are different purposes, so tell the appraiser which one applies and ask for the report’s scope, valuation basis, effective date, fee, and the appraiser’s relevant qualifications before commissioning it.

A useful formal report should identify and describe the watch, address its movement and condition, explain the valuation basis, and state a value for the specified use. FAIR’s specialty guide to watch appraisals discusses defining the report’s purpose and scope. Jewelers of America describes an appraisal as a report that describes an item, assesses relative quality, and gives an opinion of value.
A casual estimate, an insurance valuation, an estate report, and a likely sale price are not interchangeable. An appraisal does not require you to sell, and it does not guarantee what a buyer will pay.

Compare specialists and selling routes carefully
If you seek more than one opinion, compare the specialist’s watch expertise, what examination the opinion includes, what documentation you will receive, the fee, and whether the specialist also hopes to sell the watch. For a sale, ask separately about fees, handling or shipping responsibility, whether you can decline an offer, and your expected net proceeds after costs.
Some providers offer both appraisal and sale or consignment enquiries. For example, Federal Gem Lab’s service description says an owner may keep the report and decide separately whether to keep, insure, or sell. It also notes that any sale offer depends on the route, market conditions, and agreed costs. Those are that provider’s stated terms, not a guarantee of a sale price or a general ranking of services.

Keep, insure, or sell—make that decision separately
You do not have to decide immediately. Once you have a clearer identification and, if needed, a report for the right purpose, weigh the watch’s personal importance against the practical costs and responsibilities of keeping or selling it. If you are considering a sale, compare actual offers and the terms attached to them rather than treating an appraisal figure as guaranteed proceeds.
