F.P. Journe’s cases and dials are made by two related but distinct Meyrin workshops: Cadraniers de Genève specializes in dials, while Boîtiers de Genève makes cases and bracelets for Montres F.P. Journe. A 2023 visit reported a mix of specialized hand-finishing and modern equipment—and a manufacturing setup that supports specific parts of the brand’s work, not a claim that every watch component is made in-house.
Two workshops, two kinds of work
The names describe their specialties. Cadraniers de Genève makes dials, combining surface decoration and finishing processes; Boîtiers de Genève produces cases and bracelets, with machining, finishing and assembly work. The distinction matters: the two operations serve different roles, and the article describes different client arrangements for each.
François-Paul Journe founded Cadraniers de Genève in 2000. Boîtiers de Genève has an older lineage: it grew from Elinor, a case-making company founded in 1957 in Clamart, near Paris. Journe had been a major Elinor client and acquired the company; the 2023 account says Elinor made the case for his first pocket watch. Monochrome Watches’ 2023 facility report also recounts a 2012 move to Meyrin involving Journe and then-Vacheron Constantin CEO Juan-Carlos Torres. At that time, Vacheron Constantin was a co-shareholder in Cadraniers de Genève, replacing Harry Winston, which had left the share capital a year earlier.
In June 2023, the two companies moved into a purpose-built Meyrin building and were reported as wholly owned by Montres F.P. Journe. That arrangement puts the dial and case operations within the brand’s business, but it should not be read as evidence that every component in every F.P. Journe watch is produced there.

How Cadraniers de Genève makes dials
The 2023 account describes 13 specialized sections at Cadraniers. Work includes satin finishing, sandblasting, polishing, appliques, enamelling, tampography, electroplating, varnishing and hand engraving. The article notes that sandblasting uses natural sand and that paint for printed symbols is mixed by hand before being applied with a transfer pad.
Dial plates can be difficult to keep flat and undamaged. Heat during processing may distort a thin plate, so workers must flatten it carefully; some plates are scrapped when they do not meet the required standard. For enamel dials, the article describes enamel applied to both sides of the plate, with patterns on the back intended to help prevent cracking.

These examples show why a dial is more than a printed face: its appearance depends on a sequence of surface treatments and careful handling of a thin base. The workshop’s operations also include dial restoration. At the new facility, an assembly-room area had benches for restoration work, with clients sending dials and repair instructions.
How Boîtiers de Genève makes cases and bracelets
Boîtiers’ reported ground-floor setup joins machine work with multiple finishing stages. The facility includes CNC machines, sandblasting and microblasting areas, soldering and laser-engraving stations, ceramics work, polishing and assembly. CNC machining shapes components; subsequent finishing and assembly contribute to the final case or bracelet.

Case materials can bring their own manufacturing challenges. A separate report quotes Nathan Bailly, identified as F.P. Journe’s international PR manager, saying of tantalum polishing: “This polishing technique has taken years to perfect, with the right speed of rotation and the right polishing disks and pastes.” Europa Star’s account presents the comment as an explanation of the care required to polish the material. The same page includes a technical remark from an unnamed case-maker, but its decimal transcription is unclear, so it is not reliable to quote as a machining specification.
Who the workshops make parts for
The 2023 facility report says Cadraniers de Genève makes dials for outside clients as well as for F.P. Journe; it names Vacheron Constantin and Laurent Ferrier among the known external clients. Boîtiers de Genève, by contrast, makes cases and bracelets exclusively for Montres F.P. Journe, according to that account. The distinction means the dial workshop’s client list should not be assumed to describe the case workshop.

Why control over cases and dials matters to Journe
The 2023 account attributes this explanation to François-Paul Journe: “the face of the watch and its soul. If you don’t own your dial, you don’t own your soul. The same is true of the case, the frame around the painting. If either is missing, then you are lacking essential expertise”. The words frame the case and dial as part of a watch’s identity, rather than interchangeable outer components.
The account presents closer control of these operations as a way to protect design intent, consistency and specialist know-how. That is the rationale described by the publication, not an independently measured comparison of quality. What the facility details do establish is a deliberate combination: skilled decorative work and quality control for dials, alongside machining and finishing capacity for cases and bracelets.
