In an interview published by Fratello on April 22, 2025, Greubel Forsey CEO Michel Nydegger described a leadership approach built around preserving the independent watchmaker’s identity while allowing it to evolve. His emphasis was not on making more watches, but on making each one earn its place through craft and substance. The Convexe collection, with its curved cases and bolder proportions, is his clearest example of how that balance can look in a contemporary watch.
Who is Michel Nydegger?
Dave Sergeant’s Fratello interview with Michel Nydegger, published April 22, 2025, identifies him as Greubel Forsey’s CEO. In the conversation, Nydegger frames his role as stewardship: “a responsibility to continue the story, not to rewrite it.” That means protecting the qualities that distinguish the house while making room for considered change.
His comments are a portrait of leadership and brand philosophy at the time of the interview, not a report on Greubel Forsey’s current operations.
What does Nydegger say Greubel Forsey prioritizes?
Nydegger says the company is not trying to become the biggest watchmaker. “Everything we do must be rooted in substance, not volume,” he says, describing an approach that puts craft and the character of each watch ahead of production growth. He also states the ambition this way: “we are not aiming to be the biggest, but the best.” These are his descriptions of the company’s priorities, not independently measured production or market claims.

That philosophy is captured in another line from the interview: “If we cannot explain why a watch exists, then it should not exist.” It sets a demanding test for new work: a watch should have a clear reason for being, rather than exist simply to expand a range.
How does Greubel Forsey balance tradition and innovation?
Nydegger’s answer is not to choose between continuity and change. He says, “We must remain faithful to our DNA while also surprising our collectors.” The idea is to retain recognizable house character while finding fresh ways to express it. His comments about collectors reflect his own account of the brand’s relationship with them, rather than independently measured evidence about the market.

Why is Convexe central to the conversation?
Nydegger presents Convexe as a contemporary expression of Greubel Forsey’s codes, not a departure from them. In the interview, he points to curved cases, bolder proportions and wearable ergonomics as ways the collection brings a different physical presence while retaining the brand’s identity.
The official Greubel Forsey Convexe collection page lists models, materials, dimensions, piece counts and production periods. The following examples show how the collection varies by material and stated run:

The conversation offers Nydegger’s account of how Greubel Forsey thinks about identity, purposeful change and the people who collect its watches. It does not provide a head-to-head comparison with other watchmakers, independent performance testing, or a buyer’s verdict on which Convexe model is best. The collection page supports model-level details, but not claims about present availability.
