Chronoswiss says it was founded in Munich in 1983 by master watchmaker Gerd-Rüdiger Lang, at a time when quartz watches were dominant, with a focus on mechanical timepieces. Its defining move came in 1987: the Régulateur, a wristwatch that separated the hour, minute, and seconds indications. The company later changed hands and moved to Lucerne, where it continues to present itself as a family-owned mechanical watchmaker.
What Chronoswiss means by “defying” the quartz crisis
Chronoswiss’s story is one of choosing mechanical watchmaking during the quartz era, rather than evidence that the brand reversed or measured the wider industry’s decline. Its official history describes mechanical watches as having nearly disappeared in the wake of the crisis, but the company pages do not quantify that contraction. The founding context and the brand’s role in it are therefore best understood as Chronoswiss’s account of its own origins.
How Chronoswiss began in Munich
The company dates its founding to 1983 and names master watchmaker Gerd-Rüdiger Lang as its founder. Chronoswiss says Lang set out to make watches that were exclusively mechanical and of Swiss Made quality. The location was Munich, Germany—not Lucerne, where the brand is based today.
Those dates are milestones in the company’s chronology, not industry statistics. Chronoswiss’s own pages support the founding narrative; they do not independently establish the scale of the quartz crisis or the brand’s broader effect on mechanical watchmaking.

Why the Régulateur became the signature
Chronoswiss dates the Régulateur’s introduction to 1987. Instead of showing hours, minutes, and seconds through the familiar arrangement of a central hour and minute hand, a regulator-style display separates the indications. The result makes the watch’s time-reading layout part of its identity as well as a practical way to read the time.
The company describes the Régulateur as the first serially produced regulator wristwatch. That “first” claim is Chronoswiss’s; the available company history does not supply independent corroboration. What is clear from the brand’s chronology is that the design became its signature and remains central to how it explains its character.

In 2012, the Ebstein family acquired Chronoswiss’s assets, and the brand moved from Munich to Lucerne, Switzerland. This marked a change in ownership and home base while retaining the company’s emphasis on mechanical watches.
Chronoswiss identifies itself today as independent and family-owned. Those are the company’s descriptions of its status, rather than independently audited ownership classifications.

What the brand makes today
Chronoswiss describes its Lucerne atelier as a place for mechanical watch assembly and artisanal dial work. Its stated craft techniques include guilloché, a decorative engine-turned pattern, and enamelling. The company’s current identity also emphasizes dimensional displays, hand-crafted dials, contemporary materials, and mechanical movements.
That combination connects the modern collection to the original Régulateur idea: make the mechanics and the way the dial presents information visible features of the watch. The brand’s present-day story is less about repeating the conditions of 1983 than continuing to distinguish its watches through their display design and dial craft.
