Both are vintage no-date Submariners with closely related designs. For a purchase, compare the specific watches’ originality, condition, documentation and price—not just their reference numbers or dial line count. Early 5512s complicate the usual dial distinction, so configuration needs to be assessed in context.
5512 vs. 5513 at a glance
| Feature | Submariner 5512 | Submariner 5513 |
|---|---|---|
| Date display | No date | No date |
| Movement certification | Generally chronometer-certified in later production; early non-chronometer examples exist. | Generally non-chronometer. |
| Common dial layout | Later examples commonly have four lines, including chronometer wording; some early examples have two. | Commonly two lines without chronometer wording. |
| Approximate production period | Around 1959–1978, according to specialist reference histories. | Around 1962–1989, according to specialist reference histories. |
These dates are broad historical estimates, not a way to date an individual watch from its serial number. Fratello’s comparison describes the references as sharing the core design, while an auction-house example notes a shared case and bracelet in the comparison it discusses. That should not be taken to mean every component stayed identical throughout both production runs.
What is the real difference?
Chronometer certification and dial text
The main distinction is that the 5512 is generally the chronometer-certified reference, while the 5513 is generally the non-chronometer model. On many later 5512 dials, the words “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” add two lines to the dial text, giving rise to the familiar four-line description. The 5513 commonly has two lines without that wording.
Why a two-line dial does not settle the question
Some early 5512s had two-line, non-chronometer dials. A two-line dial therefore does not prove that a watch is a 5513. Nor does the presence or absence of particular dial text, on its own, establish that the dial is original to the watch. Treat the dial as one part of the watch’s configuration, not a stand-alone authentication test.

How their history fits together
Rolex’s official Submariner history says the model launched in 1953 and was guaranteed waterproof to 200 metres in 1954. Rolex describes it as “the first Rolex divers’ wristwatch.” The crown guard arrived later, and the Submariner Date followed in 1969; the 5512 and 5513 are vintage no-date references from the earlier side of that date/no-date split. See Rolex’s Submariner history.
Specialist histories place the 5512’s introduction around 1959 and the 5513’s around 1962, with both references in production concurrently for a time. They put the 5512’s end around 1978 and the 5513’s around 1989. These are approximate collector-history dates, not guarantees for any particular watch; an individual example needs watch-specific corroboration.

Which one should you get?
Choose based on the particular watch and what you value. If chronometer wording and certification are important to you, a correctly configured 5512 may be the better fit. If you prefer the simpler dial and non-chronometer character commonly associated with the 5513, look for a well-documented example of that reference. Neither is automatically the better buy: the condition, originality, service history and asking price of the actual candidate matter more than a blanket ranking.

Do not treat a serial range as definitive dating without a reliable reference and corroborating evidence for that specific watch. The sources available here do not establish current market values or authenticate any individual example, so compare asking prices against current, relevant listings and the condition and documentation of each watch.

The 5512 is generally the chronometer-certified no-date Submariner and the 5513 generally the non-chronometer version, but early 5512 dial variations make simple line-count rules unreliable. Buy the strongest original, well-documented example that fits your preferences, after checking its configuration and condition.
