Schoots told Monochrome that every component he produces in-house for Series Two was redesigned, extending the hands-on work beyond the movement to the silver dial and stainless-steel case. The official brochure lists a 41.5 mm case, a hand-finished movement and a price of $57,500 AUD excluding taxes; that price is the brochure’s stated figure, not confirmation of a current offer.
What is the Reuben Schoots Series Two?
Series Two is a manually wound, time-only wristwatch from Canberra-based independent watchmaker Reuben Schoots. It displays hours, minutes and seconds. The official brochure describes a 316L stainless-steel case, sapphire crystals on the front and exhibition back, and a hand-finished movement developed for the model. Its listed operating frequency is 18,000 vibrations per hour.
The official brochure gives the case diameter as 41.5 mm and thickness as 10 mm. In a 2024 Monochrome interview, Schoots gave the same diameter, a 49 mm lug-to-lug measurement and a 9.8 mm thickness excluding the crystals. Because the thickness figures are presented with different or unstated measurement conventions, they should not be treated as a direct contradiction or silently combined.
The brochure identifies the movement as using an existing gear train and escapement that are modified and hand-finished for the watch. Its listed in-house work includes the mainplate, bridges and cocks, screws, dial, hands, case and crown. Monochrome’s interview provides a longer component inventory, including the balance wheel and crown wheel. These descriptions concern the components Schoots says he makes or works on; they do not establish that every part begins as raw material in his workshop. How does Series Two extend Series One?
Schoots’s account of the difference is chiefly about authorship and labour. He told Monochrome that every component he makes in-house for Series Two was redesigned. In the same interview, he described aiming to double his personal labour per watch. The Hourglass’s 2026 interview later reported Schoots estimating that Series Two involved closer to three times the work. These are his accounts at different points, not independently measured production-time figures.
| Comparison | Series One | Series Two |
|---|---|---|
| In-house components | The cited interviews do not provide a complete Series One component inventory for a like-for-like count. | Schoots told Monochrome that every component he makes in-house for Series Two was redesigned; the brochure and interview identify movement parts, dial, hands, case and crown among the in-house work. |
| Dial | The cited sources do not establish Series One dial material, geometry and finishing in a directly comparable inventory. | Silver, with guilloche, circular graining, straight graining and frosted finishing; Schoots also described a flame-whitened surface. |
| Movement architecture | The cited sources do not supply a matching architecture description sufficient for a full technical comparison. | Reimagined around three-dimensional geometry, including a central steel cock that displays the centre wheel. |
| Case-making | The cited sources do not establish an equivalent Series One case-making account. | Schoots said he made the case in-house and described making nine complete case prototypes before reaching a satisfactory result. |
| Workload | Series One is the baseline in Schoots’s comparison; no absolute labour hours are stated. | Schoots told Monochrome in 2024 that he aimed to double his personal labour per watch; The Hourglass reported in 2026 that he later estimated closer to three times the work. |
The gaps in the Series One column matter: the available accounts explain what changed in Schoots’s own practice, but do not give a full component-by-component specification for both watches. The strongest supported comparison is therefore that Series Two expands and redesigns the work he undertakes himself, rather than a claim that every aspect of the two watches can be quantified against one another.

What is distinctive about the dial and movement?
A silver dial built from several finishes
Schoots told Monochrome the Series Two dial is silver and combines guilloche with circular graining, straight graining and frosted finishing. He also described a flame-whitened surface. The variety of treatments gives the dial its character through texture and light, rather than relying on a single uniform finish. The hour hand has a sculpted arrowhead tip, another detail Schoots singled out in the interview.
A movement architecture that puts the centre wheel on show
Schoots described reworking the movement around three-dimensional geometry. One visible consequence is a central steel cock that displays the centre wheel. The design makes a normally less prominent part of the movement a deliberate visual feature, while the existing gear train and escapement are modified and hand-finished for the model, according to the official brochure.

Why was making the case a challenge?
Schoots said Series Two’s case was made in-house. In his September 2023 newsletter, he described producing nine complete case prototypes before arriving at a satisfactory result. That account gives a concrete measure of the iteration behind the case, rather than implying that a finished design was achieved in one attempt.
The difficulty is also reflected in a remark Schoots quoted from an unnamed European independent watchmaker in that newsletter: “Cases and escapements, the two most difficult parts of a wristwatch to make. I have not attempted to make an entire wristwatch case. This is outsourced.” The speaker is not identified, so the observation should be read as an anonymous maker’s view, not a general finding about the industry. Schoots’s own case work shows why the case is a meaningful part of the Series Two story: it required repeated full prototypes in his workshop.

What does Series Two cost, and is it available?
The undated official Series Two brochure, accessed in 2026, lists a price of $57,500 AUD excluding taxes. Treat that as the brochure’s published figure: the sources do not establish whether it remains the current price, what purchase route is available now, or what delivery terms apply.
The Hourglass interview, published in 2026, reports an edition of seven pieces. Monochrome’s February 2024 article said the watch was pre-sold at that time. Those statements do not establish present stock or availability, so anyone interested should confirm current status and terms directly with Schoots. How did Schoots learn watchmaking?
Schoots is self-taught and says he studied the George Daniels method, according to his official biography. The Hourglass interview presents Daniels’s book as a foundational influence. Schoots described the deeper lesson this way: “Daniels provided the foundational understanding of watchmaking, but ultimately, the greatest lesson I took from his book was problem-solving and being resourceful.”
That emphasis on resourcefulness helps explain why Series Two is more than a specification update. The watch reflects a maker’s effort to take on difficult work—from movement components and finishing to a complete case—in a small Canberra workshop. For readers interested in Daniels’s influence, *Watchmaking* is the reference Schoots identifies as foundational; the cited interview does not specify an edition.
