Breguet Classique 7225: A 10 Hz Magnetic Pivot—and a Return Still to Prove

The Classique 7225 combines Breguet’s magnetic pivot with a 10 Hz escapement. Its engineering is clear; its significance as a lasting return remains unproven.

The Breguet Classique 7225 is a technically ambitious 10 Hz watch built around the company’s magnetic-pivot escapement, with a design that points back to a historic Breguet pocket watch. Breguet says it certifies the watch to a maximum rate deviation of ±1 second per day. That makes the 7225 a persuasive statement of intent; whether it marks a lasting return for the maison is still an open question.

What is the Breguet Classique 7225?

Announced in October 2025 as part of Breguet’s 250th-anniversary program, the Classique 7225 is a manually wound watch, reference 7225BH/0H/9V6, powered by caliber 74SC. Its defining technical combination is a magnetic pivot and a 10 Hz escapement. The official specifications describe an 18K Breguet gold case measuring 41 mm across and 10.7 mm thick, with 20 mm lug spacing.

Specification Breguet’s listed figure
Movement Manual-winding caliber 74SC
Escapement frequency 10 Hz
Case 41 mm diameter; 10.7 mm thick; 18K Breguet gold
Power reserve 60 hours
Water resistance 3 bar
Components 361
Lug spacing 20 mm

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The official Classique 7225 product page lists the reference and technical details.

How does the magnetic pivot work?

Breguet’s explanation begins with a micro-magnet on each side of the balance staff. Their magnetic field creates flux within the shaft; a deliberately slight imbalance keeps one end of the staff in contact with its endstone. The company says that after an impact, magnetic forces help recenter the staff.

  • AM/PM sub-dial indicator located at the 3 o'clock position

The intended advantage is more consistent, lower friction at the pivot across changing positions. Breguet contrasts this arrangement with conventional pivots, where gravity and the watch’s position affect friction. This describes the manufacturer’s design rationale and claimed benefit; the available evidence does not include independent testing that confirms the performance in use.

Breguet says it filed a patent for the magnetic pivot on 9 November 2010 and had been working on the subject since the mid-2000s. The company first used the system in the Classique Chronométrie 7727. Its 7225 launch article provides the company’s technical explanation and history.

What does 10 Hz mean, and how accurate is the 7225?

For the 7225, 10 Hz is the listed frequency of the escapement. Breguet also states that it certifies the watch to a maximum rate deviation of ±1 second per day. That is the manufacturer’s certification claim, not an independently established real-world result for every example or wearer.

No independent test result, measurement protocol or long-term performance record is established here. The figure should therefore be read as Breguet’s stated certified maximum deviation—not as proof that all watches will gain or lose no more than one second each day under every condition.

Why does the 7225 look back to pocket watch No. 1176?

Breguet says the 7225 takes inspiration from pocket watch No. 1176, built between 1802 and 1809 and delivered to Count Potocki. According to the company, that watch combined a four-minute tourbillon with a fusee-and-chain constant-force mechanism and two small seconds displays, one of which could be started and stopped. No. 1176 is preserved in the Breguet Museum in Paris.

The 7225’s own display includes central hours and minutes, a fan-shaped power-reserve indicator and two small seconds displays. A pusher at 8 o’clock activates the flyback function of the observation hand at 10 o’clock. It can be used to observe an intermediate time or the duration of two simultaneous events while the other small seconds hand continues to run. Breguet also describes an animated 1775/2025 effect using a phenakistoscope-like display.

This is a deliberate historical reference, not evidence that the 7225 literally reproduces No. 1176’s mechanism. Breguet’s launch article describes the link and the modern display.

Is the 7225 a flash in the pan or Breguet’s return?

The 7225 makes a substantial technical statement: Breguet has brought its magnetic pivot together with a 10 Hz escapement in a modern Classique, and framed the result through the maison’s chronometric history. That supports calling it an ambitious release. It does not, by itself, prove a broader comeback or lasting influence.

There is evidence of continued development beyond the 7225 announcement. In December 2025, Breguet announced Expérimentale 1, an R&D-oriented collection featuring a 10 Hz magnetic escapement alongside a tourbillon and constant force. This shows the company continued exploring related technology; it does not establish the 7225’s sales, reception among collectors, wider industry impact or place in the long-term history of Breguet.
