Mr Jones Watches builds its identity around playful, art-led designs rather than high horology. A 2025 visit to its Forest Hill studio found a team and workspace organized around turning illustrated concepts into finished watches, while the brand’s own story traces that creative approach to founder Crispin Jones’s first designs in 2007.
What makes Mr Jones Watches different?
The brand treats the watch face as a canvas for storytelling. Its official description calls its watches “statement watches that tell a story, start a conversation or simply make you smile,” and frames them as wearable artwork made with illustrators and designers from around the world. That is a different ambition from pursuing traditional high complications or elaborate hand-finishing: the point is a distinctive visual idea, translated into a functioning wristwatch.
Russell Sheldrake’s Time+Tide feature, published 8 August 2025, describes the brand’s focus as fun and visual creativity. Sheldrake wrote that watchmaking should be judged by how a maker executes its chosen form, and praised Mr Jones for mastering its colourful, creative niche. That is his assessment, not a performance test or independent technical rating.
How the creative process reaches the watch
During his 2025 visit to the Forest Hill studio, Sheldrake reported seeing printing, construction, quality control and fulfilment under one roof, including pad printing and watchmakers’ benches. He described most team members as having backgrounds in art or illustration and reported that one person was classically trained in watchmaking. He also estimated the team at “about 30-ish” people; that is an approximate observation from the visit, not a verified current headcount.

The studio account helps explain the brand’s approach: artistic concepts are not simply licensed and left as illustrations. The 2025 feature presents design iteration and in-house production work as central to making the visual ideas into watches. The brand’s official story says its watches are produced in-house and that it has two London workshops. These are the company’s own descriptions of its operations.
From a London design project to an artist-led brand
According to Mr Jones Watches’ official story, Crispin Jones began designing watches from his London home in 2007. He then approached friends and local designers to collaborate. The company now describes its work as collaborations with illustrators and designers internationally, while retaining the story-led, unconventional dial as its signature.

How artists can work with the brand
Mr Jones Watches invites both established and emerging artists to submit concepts. Its official collaboration guidance says a strong concept and distinctive style matter, and notes that only a small proportion of proposals proceed. For a design selected for the permanent collection, the brand says it pays the artist a design fee and royalties on watches sold. That payment arrangement applies to selected designs released into the permanent collection, not to every submission.

The official UK catalog includes examples such as A perfectly useless afternoon and The Silent Thief. On 7 October 2026, the catalog listed those models at £245 and £750 respectively.
