Interview: Adrian Ballinger on Climbing Everest Without Oxygen and Wearing the Favre-Leuba Bivouac 9000

Adrian Ballinger reached Everest’s summit without supplemental oxygen on May 23, 2017, at 10:53 a.m., according to his EverestNoFilter project page. In a 2019 interview with MONOCHROME Watches, the mountain guide described the Favre-Leuba Bivouac 9000 he wore on Everest as a practical manual instrument for tracking time, altitude and changing barometric pressure—not as a substitute for expedition equipment or judgment.

How did Adrian Ballinger climb Everest without oxygen?

Ballinger’s EverestNoFilter page records his oxygen-free summit at 10:53 a.m. on May 23, 2017. The project was a two-year effort with National Geographic photographer and alpinist Cory Richards. EverestNoFilter

In a 2019 interview published by MONOCHROME Watches, Ballinger said he had been on Everest 12 years in a row and had summited six times by 2016, mostly as a guide and mostly using supplemental oxygen. The interview took place in Zurich a few weeks after he returned from climbing K2 without supplemental oxygen. These are Ballinger’s recollections in that interview, rather than a separate record of his climbing history. MONOCHROME Watches interview

What was his experience summiting Everest with the Favre-Leuba Bivouac 9000?

Ballinger said he had taken the Bivouac 9000 to Everest in the two years before the interview. He valued it for three practical reasons: it gave him a mechanical way to keep time, helped him stay aware of altitude, and showed barometric pressure that he could observe while at camp. In his account, tracking time mattered when managing periods without oxygen as well as oxygen use.

  • Storage Battery: Solar Rechargeable Battery, Battery Level Indicator
  • Power Saving Function, Approx. Battery Life: 9 months on full charge (without further exposure to light), Module 3415
  • Timekeeping: The mechanical watch served as a timekeeping backup that did not depend on a battery. Ballinger said prolonged exposure to intense cold could make battery-powered equipment unreliable; that is his expedition experience, not proof that all electronic devices fail in cold.
  • Altitude awareness: The interview describes the model as able to measure altitude up to 9,000 metres. Favre-Leuba’s indexed brand text describes an inbuilt altimeter that converts air-pressure changes into a visible altitude reading. This describes the instrument’s indicated altitude, not independently verified measurement accuracy. Favre-Leuba brand article
  • Pressure observation: Ballinger said he used its barometric-pressure readings to help assess weather while at camp. The interview does not establish that the watch predicts weather or replaces dedicated forecasting and safety procedures.

He also changed the strap so he could wear the watch over an insulating clothing layer and avoid having metal directly against his skin. The interview does not specify a strap size or compatible replacement reference.

Ballinger summed up the reassurance of a mechanical timekeeper in the cold with the words: “I know I have time.”

What the interview does—and does not—establish about the watch

The account is a climber’s description of how he used a watch on an expedition, not an independent product test. It supports the model name Bivouac 9000, its reported 9,000-metre altitude range, and Ballinger’s stated uses. It does not establish current production or availability, pricing, exact strap fit, or controlled performance for accuracy, reliability or safety. The article’s historical account should not be read as a current buying recommendation.

What happened to the watch from the 2018 Everest summit?

In the 2019 interview, Ballinger said the grey Bivouac 9000 he summited Everest with in 2018 was auctioned to raise money for the Khumbu Climbing Center, which he described as training Sherpas in mountain safety skills. That was a past fundraising event; the account does not indicate an active auction, ongoing donation campaign or commercial partnership. MONOCHROME Watches interview
