Apple lists AirPods Pro 2 among the compatible models, but the more important requirement may be the iPhone: Live Translation requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, with Apple Intelligence enabled.
Which AirPods support Live Translation?
Apple’s current support documentation lists these compatible models:
| AirPods model | Live Translation |
|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 2 | Supported |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Supported |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Supported |
| AirPods Max 2 | Supported, according to Apple’s current support page |
| AirPods 4 without ANC | Not listed as supported |
| AirPods 3 | Not listed as supported |
| AirPods 2 or earlier | Not listed as supported |
| Original AirPods Max | Not listed as supported |
The distinction between the two AirPods 4 versions is easy to miss. “AirPods 4” is not enough: Apple identifies AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation as the compatible version. The standard AirPods 4 model is not listed for Live Translation. Apple sells the two as separate products on its AirPods 4 buying page.
Apple’s latest support information also includes AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2. Earlier iOS 26 documentation listed a narrower group, so older articles may not reflect the current compatibility list.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
The iPhone is often the real limitation
Compatible AirPods alone are not sufficient. Apple says AirPods Live Translation requires all of the following:
- An iPhone 15 Pro or later
- iOS 26 or later
- Apple Intelligence turned on
- Apple’s Translate app installed
- The latest AirPods firmware
- Both required languages downloaded in Translate
- A supported language and region
That creates an important buying distinction. Someone with AirPods Pro 2 and an iPhone 15 Pro or newer may only need to update and configure their devices. Someone with AirPods Pro 2 and an iPhone 14 cannot use AirPods Live Translation because the phone does not meet Apple’s listed Apple Intelligence requirement.
A new pair of AirPods will not make an incompatible iPhone eligible. If your phone is the blocker, buying new earbuds first is the wrong upgrade.
How to set up Live Translation
Complete the prerequisites
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence in the iPhone’s settings.
- Install or update Apple’s Translate app.
- Connect the compatible AirPods to the iPhone.
- Make sure the AirPods have their latest firmware. Apple’s support page does not specify a firmware number, so use the latest version available rather than relying on an old version number.
- Download both languages needed for the conversation in Translate. Apple says to download the language spoken by the other person and the language you want to translate into.
Apple’s requirements and setup guidance are detailed on its Live Translation with AirPods support page.

Start a translation
Apple provides several ways to begin:
- Open Translate, tap Live, then tap Start Translation.
- With AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, press and hold both stems at the same time.
- Say, “Siri, start Live Translation.”
- Use the iPhone Action button if it has been configured for Translate.
- Use Live Translation during a supported Phone or FaceTime call while wearing the AirPods.
- With AirPods Max 2, press and hold the listening-mode button.
What happens in a two-person conversation?
The other person does not need AirPods. They can speak normally while the wearer hears the translated speech through their compatible AirPods. The wearer can respond normally, while the Translate app can display a transcript or play the translated response through the iPhone speaker.
If both people have supported AirPods and each has started Live Translation, both can hear translated responses privately through their own earbuds. That is an optional two-sided setup, not a requirement for the feature to work.
In a noisy environment, Apple says moving the iPhone closer to the other speaker can allow the iPhone microphones to assist with translation. This may help, but it is not a guarantee of accurate results in difficult acoustic conditions.
Supported languages and regional limits

- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*

- French—France
- German—Germany
- Italian—Italy
- Japanese—Japan
- Korean—South Korea
- Portuguese—Brazil

These labels matter. Apple is identifying specific regional variants, not promising support for every Spanish-, Portuguese-, Chinese-, or English-speaking region.
Live Translation availability can also vary by country or region, device language, Siri language, and Apple Account region. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence feature-availability guidance before buying hardware for a particular language or location.
Language downloads are required, but Apple’s available documentation does not establish a complete offline guarantee for every interaction and language. Do not assume that downloading language files means mobile data will never be needed.

- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
- Confirm that the iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro or later. A non-Pro iPhone 15 does not satisfy Apple’s listed requirement.
- Confirm that iOS is version 26 or later.
- Check that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Install the Translate app.
- Make sure the AirPods are connected to the intended iPhone.
- Update the AirPods firmware.
- Download both required translation languages.
- Check language and regional availability.
- Restart the iPhone and reconnect the AirPods.
- Open Translate and try Live → Start Translation instead of relying only on the Siri command.
If the AirPods connect but translation still does not start, the likely causes include an unsupported AirPods model, an Apple Intelligence-incompatible iPhone, disabled Apple Intelligence, missing language files, unsupported regional settings, or firmware that has not updated. Ordinary Translate functions should not be confused with AirPods Live Translation compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy new AirPods?
Keep your current AirPods when:
- You own AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, or AirPods Max 2.
- You have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
- Your iPhone runs iOS 26 or later.
- Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Your languages and region are supported.
- Your AirPods can receive the required firmware.
For this group, buying new AirPods solely for Live Translation is difficult to justify. AirPods Pro 2 owners are the clearest example: Apple explicitly lists their earbuds as compatible.
Consider new AirPods when:
- Your current pair is AirPods 3, AirPods 2, standard AirPods 4, or an earlier model.
- You also want features such as ANC, longer battery life, a different fit, or newer hardware.
- Your AirPods are damaged, have severely degraded batteries, or cannot receive the required firmware.
- You have a compatible iPhone and want to move to AirPods 4 with ANC or AirPods Pro 3 for reasons beyond translation.
AirPods 4 with ANC are the least expensive currently listed new AirPods model with Live Translation support. Apple’s U.S. store showed a price of $179 in the supplied product information, compared with $129 for standard AirPods 4. Prices, availability, and promotions change, so verify the current price on Apple’s official store page.
That purchase should be viewed as a hardware upgrade that includes Live Translation—not as a mandatory upgrade for every AirPods owner.

Check the iPhone before buying earbuds
If you have an iPhone 14 or older, a non-Pro iPhone 15, or any phone that cannot enable Apple Intelligence, investigate the iPhone requirement first. Replacing compatible AirPods will not overcome that limitation.
Accuracy and safety
Live Translation is not a universal, flawless interpreter. Apple warns that the feature uses generative models and that its output may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive.
Use extra caution with medical conversations, legal or immigration matters, financial transactions, safety instructions, names, addresses, numbers, measurements, dialects, slang, and noisy environments. Confirm important details independently rather than treating a translation as authoritative.
