The Nivada Grenchen Chronosport 38mm revives a rare 1970s chronograph prototype with an unusual dial: two taupe counters sit at 9 and 12 o’clock, while the date is at 3. Its 38mm diameter is relatively compact, but it is not a thin watch: the reported total thickness is 15.7mm with the domed crystal, or 12.7mm without it.
A prototype brought into modern production
The Chronosport is a modern production revival of a Nivada Grenchen chronograph prototype from the 1970s. Fratello estimated that roughly 20 prototypes were made; that figure is an estimate, not a confirmed archival count. The model’s 2024 launch coverage described the revival and its specifications, but does not establish current availability.
The layout is the most distinctive part of the design. Instead of the familiar pair of counters arranged symmetrically around the dial, the Chronosport places embossed taupe or khaki subdials at 9 and 12 o’clock, with a date window at 3. The textured matte-black dial also has a tachymeter scale. The bezel is described as fluted or knurled aluminum, unidirectional, and marked for 60 minutes and 12 hours. Fratello’s July 2024 launch coverage and Monochrome Watches’ July 2024 report describe versions with either yellow or white lume.

These dimensions were reported in 2024 launch coverage. The 38mm diameter makes the Chronosport smaller across than many chronographs, but the 15.7mm overall height remains a meaningful trade-off. The 44.3mm lug-to-lug measurement gives another useful comparison point; dimensions alone do not establish how a watch will feel on a particular wrist.

The reported case is 316L stainless steel, with brushed surfaces and polished bevels. It is topped by a double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The 20mm lug width allows buyers to consider compatible straps, although the coverage does not establish exact fit for any particular aftermarket strap.
Movement and functions
The watch uses an automatic ETA/Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Launch reports list 25 jewels, a frequency of 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), and an approximately 42-hour power reserve. Its reported functions are hours, minutes, small seconds, date, central chronograph seconds, and a 30-minute chronograph register.

The 7750 is paired here with an asymmetrical dial arrangement, so the Chronosport’s unusual appearance comes from the combination of its historic design and the placement of its counters—not from a different chronograph architecture. These are published specifications, not independent timing or performance-test results.
Water resistance, bezel, and strap options
Launch coverage states water resistance of 20 ATM, or 200m. That is the published rating, not an independently verified test result. The aluminum bezel is described as unidirectional, with both 60-minute and 12-hour scales.

Reported launch configurations included leather, rubber, and textile or fabric straps, as well as a steel bracelet. The articles do not agree on a single fixed count of strap options, so the available combination should be confirmed with the seller. The reported 20mm width is useful when checking replacement straps, but does not by itself confirm compatibility with a specific product.
