The Seiko Prospex Black Series SPB253J1, SPB255J1 and SPB257J1 are limited-edition mechanical divers that reinterpret Seiko watches from 1965, 1968 and 1970, respectively. Their main distinctions are the historical model each references and their listed case diameters: 40.0 mm, 42.0 mm and 43.0 mm in Seiko’s 2022 launch announcement. All three share the 6R35 movement, a stated 70-hour power reserve, 200 m diver water resistance and a black-and-orange night-diving design.
How the three Black Series references differ
| Reference | Historical design reference | Case diameter in Seiko’s 2022 launch announcement | Notable details stated for the model |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPB253J1 | 1965 Mechanical Diver | 40.0 mm | Seiko’s U.S. product listing gives a different diameter and additional dimensions; see below. |
| SPB255J1 | 1968 Mechanical Diver | 42.0 mm | Stainless-steel bezel with titanium-carbide coating and aluminum; anti-reflective-coated sapphire crystal. |
| SPB257J1 | 1970 Mechanical Diver | 43.0 mm | Curved, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. |
The diameters and model references above come from Seiko’s December 2021 launch announcement, which lists a 13.0 mm case height for the trio. A later Seiko U.S. listing for SPB253 instead specifies a 40.5 mm diameter and 13.2 mm thickness. The discrepancy is between Seiko’s own sources; the U.S. listing also gives 47.6 mm lug-to-lug, a 20 mm lug distance and 106 g weight for that model only. It does not establish comparable detailed measurements for SPB255J1 or SPB257J1.
What they share
Seiko describes all three as mechanical diver reinterpretations powered by Caliber 6R35, an automatic movement that can also be wound manually. The launch announcement specifies a 70-hour power reserve, stop-seconds, date display and 24 jewels, along with 200 m / 20 bar diver water resistance. It also lists a screw-down crown, screw case back and stainless-steel case with titanium-carbide coating.
The launch materials describe the design as inspired by night diving: black evokes the dark, quiet ocean, while orange accents represent lights beneath the water. Seiko says all three have Lumibrite on their hands and markers. Each comes with a Seichu textile strap with pin buckle and an additional black silicone strap. The source materials do not establish aftermarket strap compatibility or replacement part numbers.

Which original does each one reinterpret?
SPB253J1: the 1965 diver
The SPB253J1 reinterprets Seiko’s 1965 Mechanical Diver. It is the smallest by diameter in the launch announcement’s comparison, though the separate U.S. listing gives it a 40.5 mm diameter rather than 40.0 mm. Seiko describes its crystal as curved, anti-reflective sapphire.
SPB255J1: the 1968 diver
The SPB255J1 takes its design reference from the 1968 Mechanical Diver. Seiko specifies a 42.0 mm diameter in the launch announcement and identifies its bezel construction as stainless steel with titanium-carbide coating and aluminum. Its sapphire crystal is listed as anti-reflective coated.

Seiko’s 2022 launch announcement set a worldwide limit of 5,500 pieces for each reference and said the watches would be available from March 2022. The same German-language announcement listed suggested retail prices at launch of €1,250 for SPB253J1 and SPB255J1, and €1,350 for SPB257J1. Those historical euro prices are not current price guidance or a global comparison.
