Benrus has revived the Sky Chief as a compact automatic chronograph that borrows the vintage watch’s domed-crystal silhouette and three-register dial without reproducing its original layout. The current model measures 36 mm across, uses a COSC-certified ETA 2894 movement, and is listed at $3,950 in the United States in two dial colors. Benrus dates the original to 1940; independent watch coverage also describes it as a 1940 pilot chronograph.
What made the original Sky Chief distinctive?
Benrus says it introduced the Sky Chief in 1940 as a chronograph for cockpit use. The company’s launch release describes the model as revered by airline pilots and collectors, while WatchTime independently characterizes it as an early pilot chronograph from that year. The historical story is plausible context, but claims about the watch’s adoption and operational role should be understood as attributed accounts rather than quantified evidence of how widely it was used.
The visual signature was a strongly domed crystal above a thin bezel, creating what Benrus calls a “porthole-like effect.” The three-register chronograph and minute graduations at four-minute intervals were associated with pilot navigation and cruise calculations. Benrus says those markings supported “accurate navigation and cruise calculations”; WatchTime likewise connects the four-minute marks on the 30-minute counter with aerial navigation and other pilot calculations.
Monochrome reports that historical Sky Chief examples used Venus 172 and Venus 178 movements, followed later by the Valjoux 72. These are vintage movements and should not be confused with the modern watch’s automatic ETA caliber.

The 100 m figure is a water-resistance rating, not a guarantee of suitability for a particular activity. Consult Benrus’s guidance for intended use. If fitting another strap, confirm the 18 mm lug width as well as buckle compatibility and attachment details.

How does the reissue differ from a vintage Sky Chief?
The modern watch retains the compact proportions, raised crystal profile, and three-counter chronograph character, but it is not an exact reproduction. WatchTime reports the historic case at 35 mm, making the 36 mm reissue one millimeter larger. The new case pairs a double-domed sapphire crystal with a sapphire display back, while its movement is a modern automatic ETA 2894 with COSC certification and a stated 42-hour reserve.
The counters have also changed positions. WatchTime and Monochrome report that the reissue places running seconds at 3 o’clock and the 30-minute chronograph totalizer at 9 o’clock; the 12-hour counter remains at 6 o’clock. That arrangement reverses the positions of the running-seconds and 30-minute registers described for the original. The four-minute markings preserve a recognizable historical cue, but the dial is not a strict layout copy.

Which colors are available, and what does the price mean?
Benrus’s U.S. collection page lists two versions at $3,950 each: Stratus Grey (reference SKY-SS-B-036-01) and Cirrus White (reference SKY-SS-W-036-01). The March 2026 launch release also gave a U.S. price of $3,950. These are current listing details, not a guarantee of stock or a permanent price.
Choosing between the variants is a dial-color decision; the listed case and movement specifications are shared. Hodinkee’s Mark Kauzlarich described the price as aggressive relative to expectations, an individual editorial opinion rather than a market-wide comparison. The available information does not establish like-for-like pricing against current competitors or vintage Sky Chiefs, so value depends on a buyer’s priorities: historical design, compact dimensions, a certified modern automatic chronograph, or period-correct construction and movement.

Who is the modern Sky Chief for?
The watch’s strongest case is its combination of a small, vintage-influenced footprint and contemporary materials and specifications. Its 42.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful context alongside the 36 mm diameter when assessing fit, and the 18 mm strap width may matter to owners considering strap changes. Buyers focused on historical fidelity should account for the larger case, changed counter positions, sapphire construction, and modern movement rather than treating the model as an untouched period design.
