Atelier de Chronométrie’s M284 is a newly designed movement inspired by vintage watchmaking—not a confirmed new chronograph. Developed with independent watchmaker Luca Soprana, the 30 mm calibre is intended to look and feel like a movement from the 1940s while giving the Barcelona-based workshop a platform for future complications, potentially including a chronograph.
Why Atelier de Chronométrie developed the M284
Atelier de Chronométrie built its early watches around refurbished and modified vintage movements, especially Omega 266 bases. As suitable examples became harder to find, the approach also began to limit the technical development the founders wanted. The M284 marks a shift: it was designed from scratch with Luca Soprana, and its development took more than a year, according to A Collected Man.
Co-founder Montse Gimeno described the ambition as a technical advance: “We wanted to improve and make a technical step forward.” The new calibre changes the starting point from adapting scarce old movements to designing a movement around the workshop’s own aesthetic and future plans.
What the M284 is based on—and what it is not
The M284 is not reported as a direct conversion of an Omega 266. Its design cues include Patek Philippe calibre 13-130 and vintage observatory chronometers, filtered through a classic Geneva-style aesthetic. Co-founder Santiago Martínez said, “The idea was to make something that brings you back to the past. So that when someone sees our movement, they have the sensation of seeing a calibre from the 40s.”

The Omega 266 remains relevant as context for the brand’s earlier work. A Collected Man describes it as a 1940s movement derived from Omega 30T2. Phillips, discussing an older AdC#18 watch based on an Omega 266 ébauche, reports modifications including a higher beat rate, a free-sprung balance, and extensive finishing. Those details concern that earlier watch; they are not M284 specifications. Phillips’ AdC#18 account also illustrates that the workshop’s work involves outside collaborators, including a Swiss dial supplier and a Barcelona case supplier, rather than every component being made in-house.
How the M284 is designed to look and be made
The reported diameter is 30 mm. Soprana explained the choice this way: “We wanted to keep a very classic dimension of the movements, at 30mm.” A large bridge is one of the calibre’s distinguishing features, and the movement’s layout is meant to keep modern elements to a minimum so components can be made—and, in future, remade—by hand.

The finishing is part of the design rather than an afterthought. A Collected Man describes bevels, Geneva stripes, and perlage carried out largely in the Atelier’s own workshop. Bridge dimensions were arranged to make the stripes visible, giving the movement’s architecture a role in showing off its hand-finishing. The account does not provide a complete technical specification sheet: it does not establish figures for frequency, power reserve, accuracy, or durability.
Could the M284 become a chronograph?
Yes, in the sense that the base calibre is reported to have been designed for future development. A Collected Man says the movement could be adapted into a chronograph or another complication, and notes the selection of a strong mainspring as part of the design. That is a stated possibility, not confirmation that an M284 chronograph watch has been released or is currently available.

The distinction matters because Atelier de Chronométrie has made chronographs before, but those were separate projects using vintage Venus movements. The company’s independent approach gives it room to pursue designs on its own terms; Martínez put it this way: “Being independent gives us the freedom to create the designs we want and not be conditioned by the market.”

The history of those watches shows prior experience with chronograph complications, including a split-seconds design. It does not establish how an eventual M284 chronograph would be configured, when it might appear, or how it would perform.

What is known about availability
The reporting presents Atelier de Chronométrie as a small independent workshop producing individual or limited pieces and working closely with clients. It does not establish current M284 availability, price, production count, order terms, warranty, or authorized retail arrangements. Phillips’ estimate of HKD 320,000–470,000 applies to a specific older AdC#18 auction example, not to the M284.
There is also a discrepancy in published founding dates: A Collected Man gives 2016, while Phillips says 2015. Both place the founders’ work in Barcelona and describe their vintage-watch background, so “founded in the mid-2010s” is the more cautious description.
