The 41 mm watch pairs that unusual display with a blue aventurine backdrop and a selfwinding movement, Calibre 4310.
How the Starwheel wandering-hours display works
Read the current hour where its numeral meets the arc-shaped minute scale along the upper part of the dial. As the minute hand moves along that scale, the hour numeral travels with its disc; the discs take turns bringing the next hour into position.
Audemars Piguet describes a central rotor that completes one revolution every three hours. It carries three aluminium discs, each rotating on its own axis. Four hour numerals appear on each disc, together covering 1 through 12. A slightly curved 18-carat white-gold seconds hand follows the discs’ relief. The blue aventurine dial provides the backdrop for the moving display.
This is an unconventional layout, so it may take a moment to read if you expect a conventional central hour hand. The brand’s explanation and illustrations are on its Starwheel and wandering hours page.

Calibre 4310 and the watch’s construction
The Starwheel display is integrated with selfwinding Calibre 4310. Audemars Piguet says the movement is derived from Calibre 4309, with a new module added for the wandering-hours mechanism. The manufacturer’s published description cited here does not state a power reserve, frequency, water resistance or further case dimensions, so those figures are not included.
What Audemars Piguet says about the Starwheel’s history
Audemars Piguet dates the invention of wandering hours to 1655, saying Pope Alexander VII requested a clock that would not disturb his insomnia. The brand says it rediscovered and reintroduced the mechanism under the Starwheel name in 1991, with models appearing through the early 2000s before its return in the Code 11.59 collection. This is the manufacturer’s historical account.

Sébastian Vivas, Audemars Piguet’s Heritage and Museum Director, described it as follows: “Invented in 1655 thanks to a request by Pope Alexander VII, who suffered from insomnia that was exacerbated by the ticking of his clock, the wandering hours complication was rediscovered by Audemars Piguet in 1991 and combines history, technical challenges, design and poetry.” The quotation appears on the brand’s Starwheel page.
