The Black Star is a collaboration between watchmaker CIGA Design and Swiss customization house Label Noir. CIGA Design describes it as a cosmic continuation of the design concept behind its Blue Planet watch: the earlier concept drew on Earth, while the Black Star turns to space. The brand announced the collaboration after its August 30, 2024 unveiling at Geneva Watch Day; its announcement was published on September 11, 2024. How does the Black Star display the time?
A concave, black-hole-inspired center
The dial’s centerpiece is an 8.50 mm-deep concave pit, according to CIGA Design’s product page. Blue and white galaxy-like details surround the dark center, with luminous indicators and a luminous polar-star hand. The brand says the black coating absorbs over 99% of light; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified measurement.
An unconventional hour-and-minute arrangement
Rather than presenting the time through a conventional pair of hands moving over fixed markers, the Black Star uses what CIGA Design calls “asynchronous-follow technology.” The brand describes the hour gear as rotating 30 degrees while the dynamic minute ring rotates 390 degrees from one reference point. What to consider before buying
- Case size: Fratello’s reported 46 mm diameter and 15.6 mm thickness make fit a priority to check in person or against a watch you already wear.
- Water resistance: The reported 3 ATM rating is a modest specification; do not assume it makes the watch suitable for swimming or other water activities.
- Strap fit: The reported 22 mm quick-release fluororubber strap is replaceable in principle, but confirm that any replacement works with the watch’s attachment and clasp.
- Display preference: The central pit and moving ring arrangement are the defining design choices. If you prefer a conventional dial, this watch is a substantial departure.
- Movement expectations: The listed 41-hour power reserve and automatic winding describe the calibre’s specifications; they are not independent performance-test results.
Price, availability, and edition status
Prices reported for the Black Star differ by source and date. CIGA Design’s product page displayed US$2,379 when accessed in 2026, while Fratello reported a US$1,980 launch price in its earlier coverage.
