What is the Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB 3SPC?
The FB 3SPC is a mechanical wristwatch from Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. The manufacturer says it launched in October 2022 and takes historical inspiration from Louis Berthoud’s decimal watch No. 26, made in 1793. The model’s defining technical feature is the cylindrical balance-spring in its hand-wound FB-SPC calibre.
The unusual movement is also the visual focus. Its architecture can be seen from the dial side and through the exhibition case back, while a sapphire porthole at 9 o’clock reveals the escapement area. The display keeps central hours and minutes, places small seconds at 6 o’clock, and shows the power reserve at 2 o’clock.
What makes the cylindrical balance-spring unusual?
A balance-spring is a key component in a mechanical watch’s regulating system. In the FB-SPC, the spring is cylindrical rather than the flat spiral form more commonly associated with wristwatch movements. The manufacturer describes cylindrical balance-springs as a rare watchmaking speciality and says the FB-SPC is COSC chronometer-certified.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, explained the design goal: “We wanted to integrate this type of balance-spring into a wristwatch, while retaining its original purpose that was to guarantee accuracy.” The manufacturer also claims the FB-SPC is the only cylindrical-balance-spring type to satisfy COSC criteria; that distinction is the brand’s claim, not an independently established comparison.

Thirty metres of water resistance is the manufacturer’s stated rating; the cited specification does not describe conditions for use in water. The calibre is hand-wound, so it is wound by the wearer rather than by an automatic rotor.

The FB 3SPC.3-1 page identifies a platinum case and black-treated details; it also specifies pink and black limited executions. The separate FB 3SPC.4-1 listing identifies ceramised titanium and a fabric strap. The available product descriptions do not establish a complete strap or edition-status comparison for every version.
