Presented at Watches and Wonders 2022, the Ulysse Nardin Freak S makes time visible through its rotating movement carousel. Its defining feature is a pair of inclined silicon oscillators, linked by a differential that averages their rates. The 45 mm watch was limited to 75 pieces, with 40 planned for production during 2022; its published launch price was USD 137,200.
A watch that tells time with its movement
The Freak S has no conventional hands or dial. Instead, its movement rotates across the face to indicate the time. Its in-house automatic Calibre UN-251 places two silicon balance wheels at a 20-degree incline. A differential mechanism averages the rates of the two oscillators, forming the technical centerpiece of the design. Case, materials and specifications
The reference reported at launch is 2513-500LE-2A-BLACK-5N/1A. Monochrome’s detailed specification gives a 45 mm case made from black ceramic, black-DLC-coated titanium and 5N rose gold. A black aventurine-glass plate decorates the movement, while a black alligator strap is secured by a black-DLC-titanium folding clasp. The watch uses Ulysse Nardin’s Grinder automatic winding system.

There is a size discrepancy in launch coverage: Hodinkee’s surfaced summary gives 43 mm, while Monochrome’s detailed specification states 45 mm. The table uses the latter and does not treat the reported diameter as consistent across coverage. Hodinkee’s 2022 coverage independently corroborates the edition size, USD launch price, 72-hour reserve and twin balance-wheel architecture.

Freak S launch price
The published 2022 launch prices were EUR 123,500, CHF 130,000 and USD 137,200. These are launch prices, not current retail quotes or resale valuations; current prices were not established in the cited launch coverage. Monochrome reported all three currencies, and Hodinkee also reported the USD 137,200 price.

The Freak S was introduced at Watches and Wonders 2022 as a 75-piece limited edition. Monochrome reported that 40 pieces were to be produced during 2022. The launch article includes photographs of the watch, useful for seeing its layered construction, inclined oscillators and dark, jeweled movement plate. Those are editorial images, not evidence of independent hands-on testing.
