The Ulysse Nardin Freak X Crystalium is a 50-piece limited edition that uses its rotating movement to tell time and a ruthenium-based Crystalium disc as its hour display. The 43 mm black DLC-coated titanium watch is powered by the automatic UN-230 caliber. Ulysse Nardin lists reference 2303-270-4A/1A; a September 2025 launch report also identifies a rubber-strap version, reference 2303-270-4A/3A.
How the Freak X Crystalium tells time
Rather than using conventional hands over a fixed dial, the Freak X makes the movement part of the display. The rotating hour disc completes one revolution every 12 hours, while the bridge above it turns once per hour to indicate minutes. The arrangement is a flying carousel: the mechanism rotates to show the time instead of sitting behind a standard dial and hand set. Ulysse Nardin’s Freak collection page traces the collection to its 2001 introduction and describes this movement-led approach to timekeeping.
What Crystalium adds
The hour disc is made from Crystalium, a ruthenium-based material. Ulysse Nardin says the disc is created through controlled vapor deposition over several days, forming fractal-like crystalline patterns that cannot be duplicated. The brand describes the ruthenium as a platinum-group metal and says the finished disc receives rose-gold PVD treatment and hand-applied black shading. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its material and process; the available launch coverage does not independently verify them.
The result gives the rotating hour display its distinctive surface, while the visible bridge continues to mark the minutes. Ulysse Nardin calls the disc “a singular piece of material art.”

UN-230 movement specifications
The automatic UN-230 caliber combines the time display with a silicon escapement. Its published specifications are:
- 214 parts and 21 jewels
- 3 Hz frequency, or 21,600 vibrations per hour
- 72-hour power reserve
- Hours and minutes displayed by the flying-carousel movement

Case, strap and references
The case measures 43 mm and is made of titanium with a black DLC coating. Monochrome Watches’ September 5, 2025 launch report lists a sapphire crystal and water resistance of 50 m. The reported strap choices are black ballistic-textured rubber or optional black alligator.
