The VPC Type 37HW is the first watch from Dutch brand VPC: a time-only, hand-wound steel sports watch with small seconds, a purpose-built bracelet and a 37.5 mm case. Founder Thomas van Straaten conceived it as his personal take on a go-anywhere, do-anything watch, pairing vintage-leaning design with contemporary specifications. Its original €2,479 price was a 2024 launch offer, not a current quote; VPC’s archive lists some editions as sold out, but does not establish the status of every color or remaining example.
What is the VPC Type 37HW?
VPC stands for Venustas Per Constantiam, rendered by Fratello as “beauty through restraint.” Van Straaten, a watch journalist and author, founded the brand to make his own uncompromising version of a GADA watch rather than designing around a low microbrand price target. Watch designer Max Resnick collaborated on the Type 37HW, according to Fratello’s March 2024 launch coverage.
The result is intentionally simple in function: hours, minutes and a small-seconds display, with no date. The launch palette comprised Dove Grey, Forest Green and Delft Blue dials. In a June 2024 interview with Hodinkee, van Straaten explained his motivation: “I wanted to create my dream watch to an uncompromising standard. It is common for microbrands to work to a specific, competitive price point, naturally resulting in compromises. I found myself repeatedly falling out of love with watches too quickly, precisely because of those compromises.”
How big is the Type 37HW?
Launch specifications reported by Fratello and Hodinkee give the watch a 37.5 mm diameter, 45 mm lug-to-lug length and 9.8 mm total thickness, including its domed sapphire crystal. Fratello also reports a 7.8 mm case thickness excluding the crystal. The case is 316L stainless steel with a hard coating reported as 1,800 Vickers.

Those dimensions offer a useful starting point for judging fit, but wrist comfort depends on more than diameter alone. The Type 37HW has a 20 mm lug width. Its domed sapphire crystal has anti-reflective treatment on the underside.
What movement does the VPC Type 37HW use?
The Type 37HW uses a hand-wound Sellita SW216-1 movement and is reported as COSC-certified. The published power-reserve figures conflict: Fratello says 45 hours, while Hodinkee and Monochrome report 42 hours. The consulted sources do not resolve the discrepancy, so neither figure should be treated as settled.

Manual winding is part of the ownership experience: buyers should consider whether they want to wind a watch regularly rather than wear an automatic. COSC certification is a credential, not a guarantee that every individual watch will keep identical time in every condition.
What are its case, water-resistance and bracelet specifications?
The Type 37HW has a screw-down crown, a closed steel caseback and a stated water resistance of 120 m. These are the published specifications; they should not be read as an unconditional guarantee for every water activity or for a watch whose condition is unknown.

Its steel bracelet was designed for the case and has quick-release attachment, a 20 mm end link that tapers to 16 mm, and tool-less micro-adjustment. The 20 mm lug width suggests a broad strap category, but exact spring-bar and strap fit should be checked before buying a replacement.
The case coating is intended to slow the accumulation of fine scratches, not make the watch scratchproof. In a December 2023 production explanation, van Straaten said it could be refinished with normal equipment and processes, although a watchmaker might need more time. Those are the founder’s claims, not findings from independent wear testing.

Is the VPC Type 37HW still available?
VPC’s official archive records the Forest Green edition, comprising 80 pieces, as sold out in June 2026; it records the Dove Grey edition, comprising 100 pieces, as sold out in June 2025. The archive describes past editions as not returning once gone. Those entries do not establish the status of every dial color, possible remaining new stock, or pre-owned examples. Fratello reported the March 2024 launch as a first run of 300 watches—100 per dial color—with a preorder price of €2,479, excluding VAT and shipping. The announced delivery estimate was 7–10 months from launch. These were launch terms, not a current price or delivery promise. A May 2024 update from van Straaten said the presale had met its production threshold after the first weekend and production was underway.
