The Vulcain Nautical Legacy by Massena LAB reimagines the Cricket Nautical as a brown-dial, 1950s-styled dive watch. Its defining combination is a mechanical alarm intended to be audible underwater and a dial-mounted decompression scale. The maker lists a hand-wound alarm movement, 42 mm steel case, 300 m water resistance, a $4,950 price and a 25-piece edition; those are product-page details, not confirmation of current availability.
What is the Vulcain Nautical Legacy by Massena LAB?
It is a limited-edition collaboration that revisits Vulcain’s Cricket Nautical. Massena LAB frames the design with the question, “What would the Cricket Nautical look like today if it had been created a decade earlier, in the 1950s?” The result pairs the model’s alarm and decompression-scale concept with a warm brown dial and collaboration-specific details. Massena LAB says its partnership with Vulcain was formalized in 2024 with this alarm dive watch (official product listing; collaboration history).
Dial and exterior
The brown dial has beige luminous plots and redesigned vintage-inspired hands: a baton-style hour hand, arrowhead minute hand and red alarm hand. Massena LAB says the lume glows green in low light. A rotating double dial exposes the decompression scale through an aperture. The black rubber strap was designed by Massena LAB.
How does the Cricket Nautical alarm work underwater?
The product listing describes a triple case back that acts as a resonance chamber, allowing the mechanical alarm to be heard underwater. Vulcain’s historical copy describes the alarm’s purpose as signaling “time to get back to the surface!”—a useful way to understand the original concept, not a modern safety certification (Vulcain Nautical Heritage).
The alarm is powered separately from timekeeping. According to Massena LAB, the two barrels are wound from the crown at 3 o’clock: clockwise for the timekeeping barrel and counterclockwise for the alarm. The listed alarm duration is 20 seconds ±5 seconds. The product page does not independently establish underwater audibility under contemporary dive conditions, so divers should not treat it as a substitute for a dive computer, established procedures or training.
How does the Nautical Legacy decompression table work?
According to the maker’s description, the upper dial rotates to set the scale for a planned dive. Its aperture displays decompression-stop durations at 9, 6 and 3 meters before surfacing. The crown at 4 o’clock turns the dial.
- Determine the planned dive’s length and depth using appropriate dive-planning methods.
- Turn the crown at 4 o’clock to rotate the upper dial and set the scale.
- Read the stop durations shown through the aperture at 9, 6 and 3 meters.
This is the product’s stated operating description, not independent validation of the scale as current dive guidance. Do not use it in place of a dive computer, applicable training or accepted decompression planning.
What are the movement, case size and water-resistance specifications?
| Specification | Massena LAB listing |
|---|---|
| Movement | Hand-wound Vulcain Cricket Alarm Calibre V10; 165 components |
| Barrels | Two: one for timekeeping and one for the alarm |
| Frequency | 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) |
| Power reserve | 52 hours |
| Case | 42 mm diameter; 316L stainless steel |
| Thickness | 17.35 mm, including the closed triple case back |
| Crystal | Sapphire with anti-reflective coating |
| Water resistance | 30 ATM (300 m), as listed by the maker |
| Functions | Hours, minutes, seconds and alarm |
| Warranty | Two years, as listed |
Both barrels are wound through the crown at 3 o’clock, but in opposite directions: clockwise for timekeeping and counterclockwise for the alarm. The 17.35 mm thickness explicitly includes the closed triple case back, so the case is substantial despite its 42 mm diameter. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independently tested measurements.

How does it compare with the current Vulcain Nautical Heritage?
Vulcain’s Nautical Heritage page lists a related black-dial model with the same core V10 alarm concept and many of the same headline dimensions. The page covers a related model, not necessarily every Nautical Heritage variant, and its listed price, warranty, crystal and strap details are not established here as matching the Massena LAB edition.

What is the Nautical Legacy’s history?
Massena LAB and Vulcain both trace the original Cricket Nautical to 1961 and describe development involving Swiss diver, physicist and mathematician Hannes Keller; explorer and filmmaker Max-Yves Brandily; and certified diving instructor Arthur Droz (Vulcain’s historical account). The accounts differ on the depth of Keller’s 1966 record-setting dive: Massena LAB and Vulcain say “almost 250 meters,” with Vulcain placing it in Toulon on November 3, 1966; Hodinkee reports 222 meters while Keller wore a Cricket Nautical (Hodinkee’s launch coverage). These claims should remain attributed rather than combined into a single precise depth.
