Louis Moinet’s three new 2026 Speed of Sound watches pair a historic manual-winding Valjoux 88 chronograph with vivid guilloché dials, titanium cases and meteorite accents. The black, orange and green editions are limited to three watches apiece; the brand’s product page currently lists all three references as sold out.
Three colors, three limited references
The 2026 release comprises three versions of the Speed of Sound, distinguished by dial color and reference number. Louis Moinet lists each as a three-piece limited edition and currently marks each one sold out on its official product page.
| Dial | Reference | Edition | Official page status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black | LM-130.20.51 | Three watches | Sold out |
| Orange | LM-130.20.30 | Three watches | Sold out |
| Green | LM-130.20.31 | Three watches | Sold out |
The colors are the established distinction among the three 2026 references; the available sources do not establish different movements or prices by color. The launch follows an earlier Speed of Sound edition announced in 2024 as a separate 20-piece series, not part of these three new editions (Louis Moinet’s 2026 announcement; 2024 announcement).
A mid-century chronograph at the center
All three watches use a manually wound Valjoux 88 calibre, a historic movement built in the 1940s that Louis Moinet says its watchmakers modernized for this design. The brand lists 17 jewels, a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and a 40-hour power reserve.

Monochrome Watches reports that Louis Moinet removed the original calendar functions and 12-hour totalizer, adapting the display for the moon indication. Monochrome also reports that 13,218 Valjoux 88 examples were produced between 1947 and 1974; that is historical production context, not a measure of how many remain or an indication of current value. The publication’s details appear in its February 17, 2026 launch coverage.
Jean-Marie Schaller, Louis Moinet’s founder, described the approach this way: “At the heart of SPEED OF SOUND is the Valjoux 88, a historic calibre built in the 1940s. Louis Moinet’s master watchmakers have used all their skills to modernise this icon of Swiss watchmaking and place it inside a timepiece with a unique contemporary style.”

Meteorite, guilloché and moon display
The official specification describes a guilloché dial with Aletai meteorite in the counters and a moon display incorporating a fragment of lunar meteorite. Monochrome’s independent description specifies a hand-guilloché, mesh-like dial pattern, Aletai iron meteorite in the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and small-seconds counter at 9 o’clock, and a fragment of Dhofar 457 lunar meteorite in the moon display at 6 o’clock. Those material details are Monochrome’s account rather than a complete official specification.
The brand lists a 40.7 mm grade 5 titanium case and water resistance of 30 metres. Monochrome reports an approximate case thickness of 18.7 mm, a domed sapphire crystal and rubber straps matching the dial colors. Louis Moinet’s technical data lists a 20 mm strap width and folding clasp; the brand page presents variant-dependent strap information, so strap material should be checked against the specific reference.

How the telemeter works
The telemeter uses the chronograph to estimate distance by measuring the time sound takes to reach the wearer. Louis Moinet’s example is a lightning flash and the subsequent sound of thunder:
- Start the chronograph when you see the lightning flash.
- Stop it when you hear the thunder.
- Read the telemeter scale for an estimated distance based on the sound’s travel time.
This is the brand’s practical explanation of the complication, not a claim that the watch is a precision modern measuring instrument. The instructions are on the Louis Moinet Speed of Sound page.

Price and availability
Monochrome reported the price as upon request and gave an estimate of around CHF 50,000. That figure is the publication’s estimate, not a confirmed official list price. Louis Moinet’s page currently marks the three 2026 references sold out. Resale availability and transaction prices are not established by these sources, so prospective buyers would need to check directly with the brand or a watch seller about availability and provenance.
